Shomari Figures, a Democrat from Alabama, brought a powerful blend of gratitude, defiance and inspiration to Tuskegee University\u2019s spring commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11. Figures delivered a keynote address that honored the legacy of the historic institution while challenging graduates to lead with purpose, persistence and principle.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to a packed crowd on the eve of Mother\u2019s Day, Figures began by shifting the spotlight from the graduates to the families and supporters who helped them reach the milestone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill all the parents please stand?\u201d Figures asked, prompting a wave of applause. \u201cThey supplied the home-cooked meals, care packages, cash apps, gas money, Netflix passwords and more\u2026 today is your celebration, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The speech moved from heartfelt gratitude to pointed advocacy as Figures recalled his first weeks in Congress, when he said he had to \u201cput on the boxing gloves\u201d to defend Tuskegee\u2019s legacy and the future of historically Black colleges and universities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the first things I had to do in Congress was to fight to preserve the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen,\u201d he said, referencing a decision to remove the famed World War II pilots from U.S. Air Force training materials. \u201cWell, myself and Congresswoman Terri Sewell had a simple response \u2014 no, you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the material was eventually corrected after public outcry and congressional pushback. \u201cThe Tuskegee Airmen helped save the world from Hitler \u2014 the least we could do is save their legacy from political games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Figures then recalled a second threat to HBCUs, when funding for Black land-grant universities was suspended, but not for predominantly white institutions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThey said, we are suspending some money to the Black land-grant colleges \u2014 and only to the Black land-grant colleges,\u201d he said. \u201cWell, Tuskegee is one of those land-grant colleges. And again, I had to stand up and say \u2014 no you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the funding was restored, and to prevent a repeat, he introduced legislation this past week that would require equal treatment of HBCUs when it comes to federal funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHBCU students\u2019 futures shouldn\u2019t be caught up in this foolishness,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is too much at stake to be playing these games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Figures then turned to the deep roots of excellence and service that define Tuskegee\u2019s history. He spoke of iconic figures like Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver, but emphasized the everyday greatness of alumni who shaped his own life \u2014 including his cousin, Russell Figures, a 1987 graduate and U.S. Army officer, and Judge John England, a Tuskegee graduate who helped integrate the University of Alabama\u2019s law school alongside Figures\u2019 father, and he later became one of only three Black justices to serve on the Alabama Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are all people who contributed to the rich legacy that you now stand within \u2014 and with that comes a responsibility,\u201d Figures said. \u201cNot just to preserve Tuskegee\u2019s values, but to expand them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on his own path in life, Figures offered a series of lessons drawn from experience, urging students to protect their health, to pursue their dreams with heart, to stay rooted in their communities and to treat others with dignity.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed the importance of self-care and mental health, especially in the face of social and economic disparities. \u201cThe best thing you can do for your future is to be there for it,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can\u2019t pour into others or your future if you\u2019re running on empty.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He encouraged the graduates to cultivate passion and drive in all that they do. \u201cMama and Daddy can\u2019t want more for you than you want for yourself,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s on you to find that passion, that desire, that will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Figures cautioned graduates to be intentional about whose approval they seek, saying that validation from the wrong sources can distract from meaningful goals. \u201cSurround yourself with people who inspire you,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople who will help push you forward, not pull you down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also urged graduates to never forget their roots. \u201cMany of you grew up in neighborhoods or communities that were underprivileged and underserved \u2014 but you still made it,\u201d he said. \u201cDon\u2019t ever forget that there are people there who still need you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally, he closed with a call to character: \u201cTreat people right. Treat people how you want to be treated,\u201d he said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t cost anything to be nice to people. Or to smile at people, or speak to people, or to offer to help people when they need it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Figures ended on a hopeful note, commending the Class of 2025 for keeping their commitment to education even through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we celebrate this chapter closing. But with the closure of one chapter, another chapter opens, and the work begins anew,\u201d he said. \u201cThe world will be better because of it.
