We know that protecting and restoring forests, through respecting the rights of Indigenous communities to manage their territories, can play an outsized role in addressing the climate crisis. Big corporations can play a significant role in keeping forests standing \u2014 agricultural expansion by itself accounts for up to 90% of global deforestation, and human rights defenders continue to face intimidation and violence, with 196 murdered last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global consumer goods companies remain critical drivers of deforestation and human rights violations in supply chains, particularly in producing forest-risk commodities like palm oil, soy, and paper used in packaging. Our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/kfs-scorecard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">annual Keep Forests Standing Scorecard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> holds some of the world\u2019s largest consumer brands accountable for contributing to deforestation, land rights violations, and increasing threats facing human rights defenders. The ten corporations evaluated are all implicated in ongoing forest destruction and human rights violations worldwide, with only one company, Unilever, barely receiving a passing grade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our 2024 scorecard shows that the brands \u2014 Colgate-Palmolive, Ferrero, Kao, Mars, Mondel\u0113z, Nestl\u00e9, Nissin Foods, PepsiCo, Procter &amp; Gamble, and Unilever \u2014 remain far from implementing paper promises to address the growing climate crisis. In 2024, Unilever became the first brand evaluated in the scorecard to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilever.com\/files\/people-and-nature-grievance-tracker.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">publish a cross-commodity grievance tracker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which it uses to report on its response to suppliers violating the requirements in its cross-commodity No Deforestation, No Peatland and No Exploitation (NDPE) policy. Unilever made progress toward supply chain transparency by publishing detailed supplier lists and its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilever.com\/files\/4afcc253-3727-4071-89df-c4df6133d238\/unilever-deforestationfree-scheme-rules.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methodology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for independently verifying suppliers\u2019 compliance with traceability and deforestation-free requirements.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Middle of the Pack \u2013 moving forward<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colgate-Palmolive led the middle pack with solid progress in key areas. They joined Unilever, Nissin Foods, and Procter &amp; Gamble in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colgatepalmolive.com\/content\/dam\/cp-sites\/corporate\/corporate\/en_us\/corp\/locale-assets\/pdf\/colgate-palmolive-s-palm-oil-grievance-log-update-jul-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">publishing a grievance tracker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Though only focused on palm oil grievances, Colgate-Palmolive accepted grievances at the corporate group level<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as defined by the <a href=\"https:\/\/accountability-framework.org\/use-the-accountability-framework\/definitions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Accountability Framework Initiative<\/a>) and published <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colgatepalmolive.com\/content\/dam\/cp-sites\/corporate\/corporate\/en_us\/corp\/locale-assets\/pdf\/colgate-palmolive-s-palm-oil-grievance-log-update-jul-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a list of suspended suppliers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Colgate-Palmolive joined six brands by issuing a public <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colgatepalmolive.com\/en-us\/sustainability\/our-sustainability-policies\/no-deforestation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commitment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to zero tolerance of intimidation, criminalization, and violence towards Human Rights Defenders. The growing number of commitments to protect Human Rights Defenders is meaningful progress given the increasing threats they face while defending their territories from corporate exploitation. Now, only Mondel\u0113z, Procter &amp; Gamble, and Nissin Foods lack a commitment on Human Rights Defenders protections.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Middle of the Pack \u2013<\/b><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b>not moving\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mars has not made any meaningful progress this year. They have yet to publish a list of current grievances, suspend suppliers, or adopt a dedicated Human Rights Defender policy and procedure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kao <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kao.com\/content\/dam\/sites\/kao\/www-kao-com\/jp\/ja\/corporate\/sustainability\/pdf\/palm-oil-forest-footprint-riau.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released a forest footprint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for part of its palm oil supply chain in Indonesia earlier this year, but it did not make any meaningful progress in improving its score. Despite having a published grievance tracker for smallholders, Kao does not have a tracker for non-compliance cases involving plantation companies, mills, and traders in its palm oil supply chain. Kao continues to rely on certification systems, supplier questionnaires, and self-reporting on compliance instead of undertaking credible independent verification of suppliers\u2019 performance with their cross-commodity NDPE policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21515\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21515\" style=\"width: 680px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/the-understory\/global-consumer-brands-lag-on-deforestation-human-rights-protections-in-2024-keep-forests-standing-scorecard\/mdz_chipsv2-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21515\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21515 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MDZ_ChipsV2-2-680x680.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MDZ_ChipsV2-2-680x680.png 680w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MDZ_ChipsV2-2-700x700.png 700w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MDZ_ChipsV2-2-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MDZ_ChipsV2-2-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MDZ_ChipsV2-2-250x250.png 250w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MDZ_ChipsV2-2-400x400.png 400w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MDZ_ChipsV2-2-24x24.png 24w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MDZ_ChipsV2-2-48x48.png 48w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MDZ_ChipsV2-2-96x96.png 96w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MDZ_ChipsV2-2-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MDZ_ChipsV2-2.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\"\/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21515\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chips Ahoy is a subsidiary of Mondel\u0113z International, a scorecard laggard.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b>The Middle of the Pack \u2013<\/b><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b>moving backward<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PepsiCo has moved closer to the laggards than the middle pack. PepsiCo moved backward based on its failure to advance credible independent verification of NDPE policy implementation in its palm oil supply chain or establish methods used to prove that its suppliers are respecting the rights of Indigenous communities to say no to agricultural development on their lands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nestl\u00e9 also moved backward in its score. Nestl\u00e9\u2019s new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nestle.com\/sites\/default\/files\/asset-library\/documents\/library\/documents\/suppliers\/nestle-responsible-sourcing-standard-english.pdf?ref=mt9hj5uh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responsible Sourcing Core Requirements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> failed to expand the scope of its requirements to a corporate group level, meaning it refuses to hold its suppliers accountable for the harm caused across their operations. It also lacks a commitment to rigorously and independently verify its progress towards its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nestle.com\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-06\/nestle-towards-forest-positive-future-report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goals <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of reaching 100% deforestation-free sourcing for meat, palm oil, pulp and paper, soy and sugar by 2022, and for cocoa and coffee by 2025. Despite indicating in their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nestle.com\/sites\/default\/files\/asset-library\/documents\/creating-shared-value\/raw-materials\/nestle-pulp-mill-transparency.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent pulp disclosure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that they have suspended controversial suppliers in Indonesia (APRIL and Asia, Pulp and Paper (APP)), they have not yet disclosed a cross-commodity grievance tracker or suspended supplier list. Nestl\u00e9\u2019s reporting on suspended<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nestle.com\/sustainability\/sustainable-sourcing\/palm-oil#:~:text=chain%20since%202018.-,Upstream,-supply%20chain%20companies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> palm oil suppliers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also outdated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Laggards\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ferrero, Mondel\u0113z, Nissin Foods, and Procter &amp; Gamble rounded out the bottom of the ten brands we assessed. All four brands scored an \u201cF\u201d and continue to lag behind their peers in policies and actions to address their role in driving deforestation and human rights violations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite continued pressure to do so, Procter &amp; Gamble has not published any updates to its policies this year. Similarly, Nissin Foods has not made any progress despite repeatedly being connected to ongoing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/japan.ran.org\/?p=2371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deforestation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/forest-frontlines\/harita-group-commits-to-not-logging-on-long-isun-territory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">land rights violations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Indonesia. There is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rief-jp.org\/ct12\/150847\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growing public awareness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of its role in driving deforestation in Indonesia. In 2024, Nissin Foods once again failed to disclose its forest footprint despite a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nissin.com\/en_jp\/sustainability\/environment\/procurement\/#:~:text=The%20NISSIN%20FOODS%20Group%20supports,palm's%20habitat%20and%20workers'%20rights.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commitment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to do so before 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ferrero has not made any meaningful progress toward adopting a cross-commodity NDPE policy or mandating adopting an NDPE policy for its suppliers. Ferrero also lacks a commitment to rigorously and independently verify its progress toward its<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrero.com\/au\/en\/people-planet\/source-our-ingredients-sustainably\/our-sourcing-approach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> goals <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of reaching 100% deforestation-free sourcing despite being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/RAN_Feeding_Deforestation_2024_.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exposed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for making misleading deforestation-free claims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mondel\u0113z issued a public <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mondelezinternational.com\/assets\/Snacking-Made-Right\/SMR-Report\/2023\/2023-MDLZ-Snacking-Made-Right-ESG-Report.pdf#page=77\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supporting the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) but continues to be one of the worst performers amongst global brands. The snack food giant issued a new statement about deforestation, which was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/press-releases\/mondelez-internationals-deforestation-policy-under-scrutiny-for-inadequacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scrutinized<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to significant shortcomings. Despite their involvement in the Consumer Goods Forum advancing work on Human Rights Defenders, Mondel\u0113z has not published a dedicated Human Rights Defender policy and procedure. Despite being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/forest-frontlines\/orangutan-capital-under-siege\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exposed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for its connections to suppliers sourcing illegally produced palm oil and human rights violations,\u00a0they have also not published a grievance tracker to report on actions taken in response to these scandals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Consumer Brands Stalling at the Wrong Time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year was billed as a pivotal year with the scheduled implementation of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) on December 31, 2024. Tragically, the regulation enforcement was postponed for twelve months, in a decision that came just weeks before its scheduled implementation. In the face of this postponement, some brands have published joint letters supporting the EUDR and lamenting its delay. While we welcome public displays of support of the EUDR, brands need to accompany advocacy efforts with real progress toward achieving deforestation-free products. Most importantly, brands must ensure that the corporations they do business with are not violating the rights of Indigenous People or criminalizing, intimidating, or trying to silence Indigenous communities and Human Rights Defenders.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the climate crisis accelerates, corporations must align their policies and actions with the urgency of the moment. Forests continue to fall, and frontline communities are under siege. Consumers, investors, and civil society demand more than promises \u2014 they demand action from the world\u2019s most influential brands profiting from destruction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Keep Forests Standing campaign urges global companies to take immediate, concrete actions to stop the expansion of commodities they source into the world\u2019s last rainforests and ensure protections for Indigenous communities fighting to protect their lands from corporate exploitation.
