The company had done so in Google Maps after President Trump ordered the name change at the beginning of his Presidential term.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The lawsuit makes good on Sheinbaum\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/614154\/mexico-threatens-to-sue-google-over-gulf-of-america-name\">February threat<\/a> that Mexico would \u201cproceed to court\u201d if the company didn\u2019t change the name, which it kept as Gulf of Mexico for users in Mexico, but switched to \u201cGulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)\u201d in regions outside of the two countries. According to a machine-translated transcript of Sheinbaum\u2019s Friday press briefing, she says \u201cthe only thing we want is compliance with the decree issued by the United States government,\u201d which, she adds, \u201cwouldn\u2019t have the authority to name the entire Gulf, because that is an international attribution.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">President Sheinbaum continues:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"duet--article--blockquote ewrhy30 _1xwtict9\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy38 _1xwtict1\">We couldn\u2019t say anything about changing the name of a state, a mountain, or a lake. So, the part of their territory that corresponds to them can be called whatever they decide. The part that corresponds to Mexico can\u2019t be renamed. The part that corresponds to Cuba can\u2019t be renamed, either.
