Their in-house team of IT experts has designed and built an AI-powered \u2018SmartGate\u2019, which allows native species to move from one side of a feral predator-free fenced area to the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The technology works to identify the species entering the enclosed tunnel and control the movement of the gates to ensure that only target (native) species pass through. AWC manages a network of nine feral predator-free areas that play a critical role in protecting threatened wildlife from introduced cats and foxes. These predators are the primary driver of native mammal extinctions and ongoing declines in Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_171736\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-171736\" class=\"size-large wp-image-171736\" src=\"https:\/\/ek5jbm9x6ox.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/08114752\/3.-SmartGate-prototype-deployed.-%C2%A9-Amanda-Bourne-1024x768.jpg?lossy=1&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"SmartGate AI prototype\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-171736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The prototype SmartGate was deployed at Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary for trial | Photo by Amanda Bourne\/Australian Wildlife Conservancy<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The AWC team has recently conducted a trial of a prototype of the SmartGate at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.australianwildlife.org\/sanctuaries\/karakamia-wildlife-sanctuary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on Noongar Country in South West Western Australia, with Woylies (Brush-tailed Bettongs) being the target native species. The technology has greatly improved the speed and cost-effectiveness of camera trap data processing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018The SmartGate will refine the way scientists and land managers work on the front line of the extinction crisis\u2019, says Damien Kerr, AWC\u2019s Chief Information and Technology Officer.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018It has enormous potential for integration within AWC\u2019s network of sanctuaries, and offers an exciting glimpse into the future of conservation.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The technology is still in the early stages of development, however, the potential applications are wide-ranging for conservation and will help improve outcomes for endangered Australian wildlife.
