The movie is deliberately small-scale and low-stakes, following a group of lovable losers, led by Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), with an emphasis on character development over firepower. If you have not seen it, you really should.<\/p>\n<p>And part of what makes the movie so special is the script, which was initially written by Eric Pearson, with later work by \u201cBeef\u201d creator Lee Sung Jin and \u201cThe Bear\u201d co-showrunner Joanna Calo. TheWrap spoke to Pearson, an MCU MVP with credits on everything from the early Marvel Studios short films like \u201cThe Consultant\u201d to TV like \u201cAgent Carter\u201d and feature films ranging from \u201cAnt-Man\u201d to \u201cBlack Widow.\u201d (He also co-wrote a little movie called \u201cThe Fantastic Four: First Steps,\u201d opening in just a few weeks.)<\/p>\n<p>We talked about the various versions of the movie that were tried and ultimately scrapped. But who doesn\u2019t love a good multiverse story?<\/p>\n<p>If you have not seen \u201cThunderbolts*\u201d yet, you will probably want to avoid this one for now. Let\u2019s issue a <strong><em>formal spoiler warning<\/em><\/strong> and get on with it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ABSOLUTE CINEMA | MARVEL STUDIOS\u2019 THUNDERBOLTS* | MAY 2\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bqnRzjPfb5A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-version-with-adamantium\">The Version with Adamantium<\/h2>\n<p>Pearson said that, coming off of his work on \u201cBlack Widow,\u201d he put together an initial pitch. This pitch featured, in his own words, \u201ca bunch of adamantium,\u201d referring to the fictional metal that is bonded to Wolverine\u2019s skeleton. \u201cIt was wrong,\u201d Pearson said. \u201cBut they liked the idea of putting this team together.\u201d This version was \u201cbig and sprawling and huge,\u201d but Pearson admitted that he was putting it together in the wrong way. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige told Pearson, \u201cThis group deserves a smaller, more contained thing.\u201d That led to another version.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-version-set-completely-in-the-vault\">The Version Set Completely in the Vault<\/h2>\n<p>In the released \u201cThunderbolts*,\u201d the various characters are introduced in an underground bunker, where they have been given assignments to kill one another. (This is part of a plot by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, to get rid of her dirty laundry.) But at one point during the development, that was the <em>entire movie<\/em>. Following Feige\u2019s directive, Pearson went the opposite direction and said, \u201cWhat about a \u2018Die Hard\u2019 thing?\u201d Pearson explained: \u201cI really wanted to avoid doing \u2018Suicide Squad\u2019 again. Those movies have been done twice. The idea of an authority figure taking criminals and forcing them to do something like that, I didn\u2019t want to do that story. The reverse that they are sent there to kill each other and accidentally form a team, that was fun. And then it was like, <em>Well, let\u2019s trap them below earth and basically give them a bunch of team-building exercises to escape<\/em>.\u201d When director Jake Schreier got the job of helming the movie, he started adding elements that would be in the eventual film, like the road trip and the showdown in New York. Can\u2019t spend forever in that vault!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-version-where-walker-was-the-villain\">The Version Where Walker Was the Villain<\/h2>\n<p>Early discussions actually had the movie feature the Red Hulk, but not the Harrison Ford Red Hulk as seen in \u201cCaptain America: Brave New World.\u201d Instead, Walker (Wyatt Russell) aka U.S. Agent, would turn into the creature as part of a move by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. \u201cPart of Valentina\u2019s manipulation was that she had tricked him into thinking he needed constant medication but what she was really doing was planting a time bomb in him if she needed to set him off,\u201d Pearson explained. \u201cTaking Walker, the most antagonistic member of the team, the most abrasive, and then turning him into something that they choose not to kill, but to try and save.\u201d Ultimately, the Hulk bomb plot did not \u201cfeel right.\u201d Thus, they introduced Sentry instead, a character Pearson initially discovered in the Marvel Writers Program that he was a part of back in 2010 and 2011. \u201cI always remember loving the kind of idea of, <em>What if Superman had a version of himself with that was as bad as it was good<\/em>?\u201d Pearson said. Sentry is introduced in the vault, as a troubled young amnesiac named Bob (Lewis Pullman). The character encapsulated much of the rest of the movie \u2013 \u201cheroic ambition versus self-loathing\u201d \u2013 and made perfect sense for inclusion. Sentry was in, Hulk bomb Walker was out.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-version-where-taskmaster-lived\">The Version Where Taskmaster Lived<\/h2>\n<p>One of the most shocking moments in \u201cThunderbolts*\u201d is when, early on in the vault, Ava Starr aka Ghost (Hanna John-Kamen) actually completes her mission and takes out Antonia Dreykov aka Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko). It\u2019s violent and unexpected and, it turns out, was not a part of the original versions of the movie. Not only did she live in Pearson\u2019s version of the movie but she was involved in \u201ca pretty big subplot\u201d with Ava. \u201cThey were two characters that had spent their whole early life in labs, and Ava having a little bit more autonomy and big-sistering her out of like, <em>I can help you adapt<\/em>,\u201d Pearson said. There was another, broader subplot with Taskmaster where, given her memory loss, \u201cshe kept forgetting where she was and attacking the team.\u201d \u201cThat was a running bit but probably felt like a hat on a hat,\u201d Pearson admitted.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-version-with-goliath\">The Version with Goliath<\/h2>\n<p>Another character that nearly made the final cut was Laurence Fishburne\u2019s Bill Foster aka Goliath, who in \u201cAnt-Man and the Wasp\u201d was introduced as Ava\u2019s mentor and father figure. Pearson said his character was back in the \u201cJohn Walker becomes a monster\u201d days. \u201cHe had a Goliath moment. I forget why it didn\u2019t fit,\u201d Pearson said. A shame that we didn\u2019t have that moment, but untethered from Bill Foster, Ghost is even more sympathetic and, crucially, alone.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-version-with-more-moments-in-the-void\">The Version with More Moments in the Void<\/h2>\n<p>The climax of \u201cThunderbolts*\u201d takes place inside the Void \u2013 a space created by Sentry\u2019s dark alter ego Void. In Pearson\u2019s original draft, it was \u201cmore ethereal.\u201d It was Schreier who made the space more \u201clike \u2018Being John Malkovich\u2019 rooms that are very realistic and grounded, with boxed-in walls.\u201d Pearson said that at one point this sequence was longer too, since we only see a few of the characters\u2019 rooms. \u201cIf we could keep an audience\u2019s attention, we could have everyone run their path,\u201d Pearson said. They asked themselves questions: <em>What would Ava see? What would Bucky see?<\/em> And admitted that there were \u201cprobably a million different versions\u201d of what wound up in the movie, with Yelena and Bob.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-version-with-scarlett-johansson-maybe\">The Version with Scarlett Johansson (Maybe)<\/h2>\n<p>Obviously, when Yelena goes into her memories, it would have been easy to make the case for a Scarlett Johansson cameo. Johansson\u2019s Black Widow Natasha was Yelena\u2019s makeshift sister and she had to say goodbye to her after the events of \u201cAvengers: Endgame.\u201d (For those who don\u2019t remember, Yelena was actually blipped and came back and had to learn about her sister\u2019s death, which she blamed on Jeremy Renner\u2019s Hawkeye.) Pearson said that he could not remember if there was a draft that featured Johansson\u2019s character. \u201cI can\u2019t remember if that was discussed and if it was not, then we are really stupid,\u201d Pearson said. We\u2019re erring on the side of \u201cit was probably discussed,\u201d if only to make sure Pearson does not devolve into his own void.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-version-where-they-stayed-the-thunderbolts\">The Version Where They Stayed the Thunderbolts<\/h2>\n<p>While Pearson said his second \u201cThunderbolts*\u201d pitch \u201cwas really the skeleton of this movie that remains now,\u201d there was a big change towards the end. In Pearson\u2019s script, Valentina announces the formation of the Thunderbolts to an anxious crowd of press and on-lookers. And Yelena leans in and tells Valentina, \u201cYou work for us now.\u201d But when he presented the idea to Feige, Pearson received, what he called, \u201cThe best response I\u2019ve ever gotten.\u201d Feige turned to Pearson and said, \u201cShe should have introduced them as the Avengers.\u201d \u201cI was just thinking, <em>If that\u2019s the only note I\u2019m getting out of this, take the money and run,<\/em>\u201d Pearson said.
