{"id":236431,"date":"2025-05-11T11:52:36","date_gmt":"2025-05-11T11:52:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/aerospace\/delta-air-lines-and-korean-air-carve-up-25-stake-in-westjet\/"},"modified":"2025-05-11T11:52:36","modified_gmt":"2025-05-11T11:52:36","slug":"delta-air-lines-and-korean-air-carve-up-25-stake-in-westjet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=236431","title":{"rendered":"Delta Air Lines and Korean Air carve up 25% stake in WestJet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Delta Air Lines and Korean Air have both acquired minority shares in Canadian carrier WestJet, with Air France-KLM also set to benefit from the investment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The two global carriers, who have a long-standing partnership, confirmed that they will take\u00a0equity stakes totaling 25% in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerotime.aero\/tag\/westjet\" title=\"\">WestJet<\/a>, with Delta paying $330 million for 15% and Korean Air investing $220 million in exchange for 10%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese investments build on each airline\u2019s existing relationship with WestJet to provide further benefits to customers in North America, Europe, Asia and beyond,\u201d both airlines said in a statement on May 9, 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-1\"\/>\n<p>The shares are being purchased from private equity firm and WestJet owner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onex.com\/\" title=\"\">Onex<\/a>. Following the announcement, Co-Head of Onex Partners Tawfiq Popatia\u00a0said he was \u201cdelighted\u201d to be welcoming the airlines as shareholders. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As part of the agreement, Delta retains\u00a0the right and intent to sell and transfer a 2.3% stake in WestJet to its joint venture partner Air France-KLM, also an existing WestJet partner, in exchange for $50 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvesting in a world-class partner like WestJet aligns our interests and ensures that we remain focused on providing a world-class global network and customer experience for travelers in the United States and Canada,\u201d said Delta CEO Ed Bastian. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-2\"\/>\n<p>He added: \u201cTogether, Delta and our airline partners are connecting the world and transforming the future of travel.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Delta and Korean Air have each been codeshare partners with WestJet for years while Delta and Korean Air\u00a0launched a joint venture partnership on transpacific routes\u00a0on May 1, 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are pleased to invest in WestJet as part of our continued commitment to enhancing transpacific connectivity,\u201d said Walter Cho, Chairman and CEO of Korean Air. \u201cThis strategic partnership will enhance our global network and create long-term value for customers through greater choice and convenience.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-3\"\/>\n<p>Delta has made equity investments with several international partners, including Air France-KLM,\u00a0LATAM, Aeromexico, Virgin Atlantic, China Eastern and Korean Air\u2019s parent company, Hanjin\u00a0KAL.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese investments, and the enhanced partnerships they bring, are an endorsement of our people and WestJet\u2019s differentiated performance through an extraordinary period for aviation in recent years,\u201d said WestJet\u00a0CEO\u00a0Alexis von
