The City of Detroit has obvious historical importance\u2014as a final terminus on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mhc\/michigan-history\/michiganfreedomtrail\">Underground Railroad<\/a> of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, for example; as the cradle of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehenryford.org\/collections-and-research\/digital-collections\/expert-sets\/7139\/\">Henry Ford\u2019s assembly line<\/a> and the birth of the United Autoworkers; as the capital of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/detroithistorical.org\/learn\/encyclopedia-of-detroit\/arsenal-democracy\">Arsenal of Democracy<\/a>\u201d in WWII, as the model for the boom-and-bust (and boom?)\u00a0 dynamics of the evolving technological and industrial capitalist order; as a crossroads; as a destination of promise and complexity for those who made the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/research\/african-americans\/migrations\/great-migration\">Great Migration<\/a> from the south, and for immigrants coming from all parts of the globe.<span id=\"more-25658\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/s-usih.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/detroit-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-25660\" src=\"https:\/\/s-usih.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/detroit-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"212\"\/><\/a>Today Detroit is no longer a \u201cbest keep secret\u201d for informed travelers. It appeared twice in the past decade as one of <em>The New York Times\u2019 <\/em>\u201c52 places to visit in the world\u201d list. There is no better symbol of the city\u2019s resurgence from the bankruptcy years of the early 2010s than the renovation (underwritten by the Ford Motor Company) of the mammoth<a href=\"https:\/\/michigancentral.com\/a-new-beginning-ford-to-reopen-michigan-central-station-after-multi-year-historic-restoration\/\"> Michigan Central Train Station<\/a> (pictured here), once a dark, windowless, hulking reminder of abandonment and decay, which (re)opened to great fanfare in June of last year as the ornate nexus of a technology hub in the city\u2019s oldest intact neighborhood, Corktown. Woodward Avenue and the once-dormant downtown hums with pedestrians and all kinds of new activity. Will the momentum reach into the neighborhoods?\u00a0 There are signs in the affirmative, but the answers remain ambiguous and contested.<\/p>\n<p>Detroit\u2019s appeal to the visitor has many facets, among them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0a metro area of 4 million, where over 200 languages are spoken.\u00a0 This includes vibrant SW Detroit, with its first and second generation population of Mexican immigrants, and the largest Arab American community in the U.S., centered in Dearborn and Hamtramck<\/li>\n<li>an array of world class museums and cultural landmarks, including the Detroit Institute of Arts (with its monumental Diego Rivera mural <a href=\"https:\/\/dia.org\/collection\/detroit-industry-murals-58537\">series<\/a>, \u201cDetroit Industry\u201d) the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewright.org\/\">Wright Museum of African American History<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/detroithistorical.org\/detroit-historical-museum\/plan-your-visit\/general-information\">Detroit Historical Museum<\/a><\/li>\n<li>a lively, cross-fertilizing culture in arts and music, and a constellation of dining and entertainment options\u2013 reflecting the diversity of the city<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Detroit is a place in the continual process of \u201cre-invention,\u201d existing in a particularly interesting phase of development.
