Good evening. After an absence of several weeks, the day
\nbefore yesterday marked the return of Pub Friday.<\/b> It had been a considerable
\ntime since my last bus trip, although I did take the train to Marden<\/b>
\nlast Friday <\/b>in a further attempt to revisit the two pubs that were closed on my
\nEaster Monday <\/b>visit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

That trip was only partially successful, as disclosed in
\nthe previous article.\u00a0 <\/span>Currently, it is an \u201call-hands-on-deck\u201d<\/i><\/b>
\nsituation as Mrs. PBTS<\/b> and I prepare for our two-week, British Isles<\/b>
\ncruise which commences on Sunday <\/b>week. Additionally, we are faced with
\nthe task of clearing out 30 years<\/b> of accumulated \u201citems\u201d<\/i><\/b>
\nfrom our kitchen, in order to make way for the installation of a new kitchen by
\nthe fitters we have engaged. The kitchen will be installed whilst we are away,
\nallowing the craftsmen uninhibited access to the work area, without us getting
\nin the way.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

It is truly remarkable how much clutter can accumulate over
\nthe years. With numerous drawers and cupboards, the temptation often arises to
\nstore items rather than discard them, thinking they might be useful someday.
\nWhile this may be my wife’s rationale, I must admit that I am likely guilty of
\nthis habit as well. We made reasonable progress, and I was planning to continue
\nthe work, until my wife announced she had a VAT return <\/b>to complete, on behalf
\nof one of her builder clients. She mentioned that she could work best if I went
\nout, allowing her some peace and quiet. I was more than happy to accommodate
\nher request, but where should I go?<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

In my free time, I have been trying to visit as many Heritage
\nPubs<\/b> listed by CAMRA <\/b>as possible. This isn\u2019t a \u201ctime-bound\u201d<\/i><\/b>
\nproject, but much more of an open-ended \u201cas and when\u201d<\/i><\/b> type of
\nexercise However, I have already visited most of the ones within easy
\ntravelling distance, those located farther afield, require a lot more forward
\nplanning and attention, in order to tick them off the list. I have considered
\nspending a couple of days in Brighton,<\/b> where there are about six heritage pubs.,
\nbut there are also other \u201chot spots\u201d <\/i><\/b>such as Canterbury, Faversham<\/b> and Thanet.<\/b>
\nThese destinations involve a fair amount of travel time, hence the idea of a
\nfew overnight stops, or the occasional, long weekend.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

One suggestion, a little closer to home, and perhaps more accessible
\n(incorrect, as it happened), was the tiny maritime settlement of Upnor,<\/b> a place
\nthat is nothing more than a hamlet, situated on an inlet off the Medway
\n<\/b>estuary, to the northwest of Chatham,<\/b> and on the opposite bank of the river.
\nIt\u2019s a place I’ve visited before, although the last time I set foot there, must
\nhave been 30 years or more ago. Upnor<\/b> is graced by a charming little pub called
\nthe Tudor Rose <\/b>sited at the top of a hill which leads down to the river. The
\npub was free house when I first knew it, although today it belongs to Shepherd
\nNeame<\/b> and, as referenced earlier, is on CAMRA\u2019s Heritage Pub<\/b> website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Also on the site, is the village\u2019s second pub, the King’s Arms,<\/b>
\nwhich is a little further in land. So, the opportunity to tick off a couple of
\nnational inventory, heritage pubs seemed too good to miss, but how to get there
\nusing public transport, was the issue stopping me. Taking the train to Strood,<\/b>
\nwas the obvious answer, as an hourly service operates between the Medway towns<\/b>
\nand Paddock Wood,<\/b> but the fly in the ointment, proved to be the infrequent bus
\nservice between Strood <\/b>and Upnor. <\/b>Running at two hourly intervals, and at the
\nmost inconvenient of times \u2013 no joined-up thinking when it came to connecting
\nwith local rail services, I quickly dropped that idea. There was the option of
\na two-mile walk from Strood<\/b> station, but I am not a huge fan of walking through
\nurban areas, or of post-industrial blight. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Another day, perhaps, but not on a bright and sunny spring
\nday, when I could be enjoying the splendour of the beautiful Kent<\/b> and Sussex
\n<\/b>countryside, rather than trudging through a series of soulless industrial
\nestates. This was where the idea of repeating a bus journey<\/b><\/a><\/u> along the B 2110<\/b>,
\nin the direction of East Grinstead<\/a>,<\/b> re-surfaced. \u00a0<\/span>The aforementioned road skirts the northern
\nedge of Ashdown Forest<\/b>, and on is way west passes through a number of delightful
\nand picturesque Wealden<\/b> settlements. Groombridge, Withyham, Hartfield, Colemans Hatch<\/b>
\nand Forest Row<\/b> are the principal places along this road, although on this
\noccasion Coleman\u2019s Hatch<\/b> would represent my most westerly point. It was exactly
\nthe same, just over three years ago, when I used the 291 Metrobus<\/b>, which runs
\nhourly, in both directions, between Tunbridge Wells<\/b> & East Grinstead.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

It was a similar sunny day back in March 2022<\/b>, and I had
\nevery intention of not just using the same route, but of following the same line
\nof attack. For this plan to work, and to take full advantage of the time
\nintervals between buses, it is necessary to take the 10:52<\/b> bus from Tunbridge
\nWells RVP<\/b>, which will drop you at 11:23 <\/b>opposite Holy Trinity <\/b>church, at Coleman\u2019s
\nHatch.<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

From there it is a 10-minute<\/b>, uphill walk towards the boundaries of the forest,
\nand the lovely old Hatch Inn<\/b>, an establishment which despite describing itself
\nas a gastropub, still functions as a proper, atmospheric, country inn. Dating
\nfrom 1430<\/b>, as evidenced by its low ceilings and numerous old beams, the Hatch
\nInn<\/b> has the advantage of opening early, at 11:30am. <\/b>This allows time for a leisurely
\nfirst pint of the day, before heading back down to the church, and the 12:02 Metrobus, <\/b>service back towards Tunbridge Wells.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

That\u2019s the theory, but things didn\u2019t quite go to plan on
\nFriday<\/b>, because I overslept, and didn\u2019t get to Tunbridge Wells<\/b> until 20 minutes
\n<\/b>after the departure of the 10:52<\/b> service. It\u2019s my own fault for not setting the
\nalarm clock, although in mitigation this oversight was out of respect to Mrs
\nPBT\u2019s<\/b>, who is grumpiness personified, first thing in the morning. I was convinced
\nthat I would wake up in time, but sadly I didn\u2019t, and despite rushing to get
\nready, left the house with no chance of catching a connecting bus over to
\nTunbridge Wells.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

That unintended lie-in, had the potential of de-railing my
\ncarefully worked out, plan of attack, as it would only allow 20 minutes<\/b> to walk
\nup to the Hatch Inn<\/b>, gulp down a pint, before rushing back, admittedly downhill,
\nto take a bus going back towards Tunbridge Wells<\/b>. That was why that first bus,
\nplus the 11:30<\/b> opening with its extra 30 minutes <\/b>wiggle room, were the keys to
\nthe success of the entire day\u2019s beer sampling. When you\u2019ve screwed up, and it\u2019s
\nyour own fault, there\u2019s not much you can do, except admit you were wrong, and
\nthen put Plan B<\/b> into action. Before doing this I dived into the Opera House (T.
\nWells, JDW) <\/b>for a consolation flat white, along with the chance to observe the
\nmid-morning trade at this flagship Wetherspoon\u2019s<\/b> outlet. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I then boarded the 11:52<\/b> bus, and alighted at Groombridge<\/b>, a
\nvillage that I\u2019d originally intended as the final destination on the tour. There
\nwas a valid reason for this, because the Crown Inn,<\/a><\/u><\/b> a lovely old pub that overlooks
\nthe village green, keeps old fashioned hours, and closes between 3pm<\/b> and 5pm.
\n<\/b>In order to do justice to the Crown<\/b>, as well as the other three pubs I visited
\nthat afternoon, you can read my experiences of all of them in the next post,
\nwhich I\u2019m sure you will find interesting. <\/p>\n
