I’ve been fretting about the coming AI revolution for a decade now.\u00a0It started when I realized that the biggest threat to the human body<\/i>
\n was going to be not climate change or political turmoil but the
\npersistent human weakness for tech wizardry. In 2014 there were only 6
\npeople in the world paid full-time to try to prevent AI from wiping out
\nhumans (according to AI researcher Nick Bostrom). That year I did my TED
\n talk on The Erotic Crisis<\/a>
\n about my fears. But then finally journalists started asking what I
\nthought were the right questions; not “will AI kill us?” but “what
\neffect AI will have on human flourishing?” So I felt I could stop
\nobsessing about it and return to artmaking.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Now
\n we’re faced with the game-changing appearance of AI generators, which
\n“create” brand new text or images from human prompts. The results are
\neerie and downright frightening (as when Bing’s Sydney insists that Kevin Roose loved it<\/a> instead of his wife!) Will humans be obsolete now? Not yet, but it is looking more dire for us every day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Alignment”
\n (of AI with human values) has been an ongoing fear since the beginning
\nof AI. The final singularity will be the objective one, when AI actually<\/p>\n

does permanently overtake humans. But I contend that no one will really
\nknow when that happens. It will make little practical difference,
\n because that will
\nbe proceeded by three others that will mark the end of human dominance
\non earth:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
\n

The first Singularity will be Relational<\/i><\/b>,
\n when humans will no longer be able to tell when they are dealing with a
\n machine or a person. This is already happening in customer service and
\nother such applications where it really doesn’t matter much whether the
\nvoice on the other end is human as long as your problem is solved. But
\nwhere the relation<\/i> is most important\u2013\u2013 such as between a
\npolitical representative and her constituents, or AI posing as
\nintimates\u2013\u2013 this will be catastrophic.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second one will be Economic<\/i><\/b>,
\nthe point where AI so disrupts employment that vast sectors of the
\npopulation are made obsolete, as the jobs that have supported us forever
\n are replaced with AI programs that can do the same work, without breaks
\n or any requirements other than power, for mere pennies.<\/span><\/p>\n

The third will be a Political<\/i><\/b>
\n one, when a certain large portion of the population reacts against the
\nstrangeness of a newly unfathomable world where humans have lost
\ncontrol. They will blame whomever they hate most (immigrants, Democrats,
\n techies) and, fueled by social media wildfires, launch a war against
\nthe perceived perpetrators, regardless of facts. When AI becomes
\nmisaligned with “human values” will anyone anywhere be able to tell
\nsource?<\/p>\n

And of course the final singularity is Loss of human agency<\/i><\/b>,
\n but by that point it\u00a0will forever be unknowable, which hardly matters.
\nOnce civilization is controlled by an invisible hand, humans will simply
\n not matter. \u201cThe AI does not love you, nor does it hate you. You are
\nmade of atoms it can use for something else,” Eliezer Yudkowsky (one early AI safety guy) quite chillingly<\/span> states. Furthermore, humans will only be able to tell in retrospect, when we realize that at some point we lost all control.<\/p>\n

Much
\n of this is beginning to sound familiar now. I believe the dangers are
\nso broad and so hidden that when we hear of specific ones it hardly matters since so many more lie hidden or even
\nbeyond human comprehension. Still, we should all be aware of the threats
\n and take them seriously!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

AI is being developed
\nwithout controls by competitors for an unbelievably huge prize, a recipe
\n for certain destruction. Even if all parties know it’s a race to doom,
\nevery one of them will rather be first than see the other guy win. This
\nis fixed human nature, I’m afraid.\u00a0Since the capitalist market is now
\nour god, greed will be our downfall.\u00a0In such an environment, AI will
\nsteadily grow in capacity while humans will only defend those places
\nwhere we can see our own weakness. AI will overtake humans not in areas
\nwe imagine, but the places we never thought of, since it will operate in
\n ways that never occurred to us! It won’t be until after the takeover,
\nif ever, that humans will finally see where our weaknesses actually lie.
\n More likely, we’ll never know how we lost that battle. That’s of course
\n too late.<\/p>\n

I don’t see any remedy, other than a full stop, which Yudkowsky recommends<\/a>.
\n More skepticism and more regulation placed on AI will help slow the
\ncrisis. But like Narcissus, we might just die transfixed with the image
\nwe see in our reflection.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I hope we can all apply our humanity to
\n this problem. We need us all. In the meantime, take great refuge in
\nyour relationships. Human relationships are what make life worth living.
