We share a general understanding of what we mean by \u201cwine.\u201d And, thanks to strict legal definitions surrounding the spirit, we know exactly what makes bourbon <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bourbon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But the class of nonalcoholic\u2014or N\/A, or nonalc, or spirit-free\u2014beverages is a developing frontier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At their most basic, nonalcoholic drinks are those that do not contain alcohol, including water and ginger ale and chocolate milk, but obviously, we know, that isn\u2019t what we\u2019re talking about. So: Nonalcoholic drinks are&#8230; well, what? Drinks that serve the social function of alcohol? And what is that, exactly? To give you something to hold at a party? To do something, nonalcoholically, to impart some kind of buzz? It is an existential question. Even the brands shaping the space cannot completely agree on an answer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat\u2019s really cool about the category is that actually, there is so much permission and so much room for innovation,\u201d says Lorelei Bandrovschi, founder and CEO of the alcohol-free <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.listen.bar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listen Bar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New York City. And as the options within the nonalcoholic beverage market have exploded, so has the vocabulary to describe them. \u201cIt\u2019s evolving as we speak,\u201d says Victoria Watters, co-founder of Dry Atlas, a media company focused on alcohol alternatives (her preferred term). At the moment, the category is still largely defined in terms of what it isn\u2019t: It is nonalcoholic. It is spirit-free and zero-proof. It is described in opposition to its alcohol-containing cousins, which is logical, for communication purposes\u2014alcohol, after all, is still the default when it comes to adult-focused beverages served in fancy glasses\u2014but it is also limiting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mostly, as of this writing, people talk about the flavor of N\/A beverages the same way they do for booze, notes Laura Silverman, founder of the nonalcoholic information hub <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeroproofnation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zero Proof Nation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Drinks are hoppy, smoky, bitter, botanical. (There was an era, she points out, when the mouthfeel of nonalcoholic options was often, accurately, described as \u201cthin,\u201d but we are well past that now.) Instead, the current vocab of nonalcoholic drinking is focused on carving out a separate space\u2014something distinct from booze but equal to it, with its own evolving subcategories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accordingly, the meanings of booze-free buzzwords are fuzzy, nuanced and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/mocktail-nonalcoholic-cocktail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">often controversial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is a language still in flux. But because all we have to go on is the present, here is a non-exhaustive guide to the very current lexicon of nonalcoholic drinks.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"new_article_block subheader_divider\">\n<h6><span\/><\/h6>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"new_article_block content-block\">\n<p><b>Adaptogens:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specific herbs, roots and fungi that are thought to help the body cope with stress and return to a more balanced state. Many of them have long histories in Eastern medicine; their role in Western medicine is&#8230; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wellness\/2022\/01\/13\/adaptogen-drinks-alcohol-replacement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Common examples include ashwagandha<\/span><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ginseng, licorice root, lion\u2019s mane, reishi and rhodiola rosea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Alcohol alternatives: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On occasions when one might typically drink an alcoholic beverage, a person might instead choose to nurse an alcohol alternative. Essentially synonymous with ANAs (see below), alcohol alternatives are drinks that 1. do not contain alcohol, and 2. occupy the logistical and emotional space otherwise occupied by alcohol. Some people argue that to qualify as a true alcohol alternative, a drink must also provide some kind of alcohol-esque buzz, though this is hardly the consensus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Alcohol-free: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A product that contains no detectable alcohol, meaning it has been tested by the U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) and is\u2014truly\u20140.0 percent alcohol by volume (ABV). All alcohol-free drinks are nonalcoholic, but not all nonalcoholic drinks qualify as alcohol-free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>ANA: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">N\/A is the more common designation for the category, but some experts argue that \u201cANA\u201d\u2014for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adult<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nonalcoholic beverage\u2014is the superior term, because it specifies that the beverage in question is meant to capture the experience and\/or social function of drinking alcohol. Seltzer, soda and milk, for example, are all technically N\/A drinks, but they are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ANA drinks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Analogue: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonalcoholic versions of products traditionally containing alcohol. A spirit-free bourbon, for example, is a bourbon analogue, because it has a clear alcoholic counterpart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Blends: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A nonalcoholic product\u2014typically a wine proxy\u2014that has been produced not by dealcoholizing an alcoholic base, but rather by layering fruits, vinegars and\/or teas with herbs and spices to create a similarly complex flavor profile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Botanical: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Literally, \u201cderived from plants.\u201d The use of this term often signals that this is not the kind of artificial sugar water one might have learned to expect from previous eras of nonalcoholic beverages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Burn: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sensation of, well, burning associated with drinking high-proof alcohol. To successfully recreate that facet of the alcohol experience, a zero-proof analogue (see also: Analogue) must find another way to evoke a similar heat, sometimes via spices like ginger and chiles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Canna bevs: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinks infused with THC (a psychoactive compound in cannabis), with or without the addition of CBD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>California sober: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using weed but no other drugs or alcohol, as one does (supposedly) in the relaxed but (supposedly) health-conscious idyll of California. The term is also the original framework for describing one\u2019s mind-altering consumption in terms of place, a classic source of jokes. Recent entrants to the category, via comedians on the internet, include: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ymmayer\/status\/1799070420781719933?t=Blkh8WNXq3S6QhRX-UCAQA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York sober<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (no alcohol, yes meth); an alternative <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ellesep\/status\/1193644152208134148\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York sober<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (no alcohol, yes cocaine); <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=%22berlin%20sober%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berlin sober<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (no alcohol, yes ketamine) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jmurffff\/status\/1479297734377197568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicago sober<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (yes alcohol).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"new_article_block post_block has-3\">\n<div class=\"cc_holder tease\">\n<div class=\"cc_image\">\n<div class=\"cc_image-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"tease__image-link\" href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/nonalcoholic-beer-golden-age\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"tease__image\" src=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Social-Golden-Age-NA-Nonalcoholic-Beer.jpg\" alt=\"Golden Age NA Beer\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 96vw, 33vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Social-Golden-Age-NA-Nonalcoholic-Beer.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Social-Golden-Age-NA-Nonalcoholic-Beer.jpg?resize=300,157 300w, https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Social-Golden-Age-NA-Nonalcoholic-Beer.jpg?resize=768,402 768w, https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Social-Golden-Age-NA-Nonalcoholic-Beer.jpg?resize=1024,536 1024w, https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Social-Golden-Age-NA-Nonalcoholic-Beer.jpg?resize=150,79 150w, https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Social-Golden-Age-NA-Nonalcoholic-Beer.jpg?resize=200,105 200w, https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Social-Golden-Age-NA-Nonalcoholic-Beer.jpg?resize=500,262 500w, https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Social-Golden-Age-NA-Nonalcoholic-Beer.jpg?resize=600,314 600w, https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Social-Golden-Age-NA-Nonalcoholic-Beer.jpg?resize=700,366 700w, https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Social-Golden-Age-NA-Nonalcoholic-Beer.jpg?resize=800,419 800w, https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Social-Golden-Age-NA-Nonalcoholic-Beer.jpg?resize=1000,523 1000w, https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Social-Golden-Age-NA-Nonalcoholic-Beer.jpg?resize=50,26 50w\"\/><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"cc_text_card\">\n<div class=\"cc_content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/nonalcoholic-beer-golden-age\/\"><\/p>\n<h3><span>Now Entering the Golden Age of N\/A Beer<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In just five years, the category has moved beyond its staid roots to become a booming industry with its own cast of big-name players and independent upstarts.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"new_article_block content-block\">\n<p><b>Damp drinking, flex\/flexi drinking: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various ways of describing an intentionally moderate\u2014though not totally abstemious\u2014relationship with alcohol with slightly different implications. While \u201cdamp drinking\u201d is synonymous with (though perhaps somewhat less smug than) \u201cmindful drinking\u201d and indicates a purposeful reduction in alcohol consumption, \u201cflex drinking\u201d\u2014Watters\u2019 preferred term\u2014implies alcohol neutrality, with no hierarchy between alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Dealcoholization: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process of removing alcohol from a product that typically contains it, such as wine or beer. The two most common ways to do this are reverse osmosis\u2014an elaborate filtering process that separates out the alcohol from the rest of the liquid\u2014and vacuum distillation, during which the product is heated until the alcohol evaporates. Because both of these processes can mess with flavor, some producers, Athletic Brewing Co. chief among them, are very proud that they do not dealcoholize their products, but instead use proprietary brewing methods that prevent the production of alcohol in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Elixir, tonic: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinks that do not have any prescriptive definition, but carry an appealing air of witchy mystery and\/or 19th-century pharmaceuticals. Elixirs, in particular, sound intriguingly complex, and while neither term is regulated in any way, they both slyly imply\u2014ironically or otherwise\u2014some kind of curative state change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Ferments (noun): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A vague but cool- and sophisticated-sounding term for nonalcoholic fermented beverages that are meant to serve the same elevated social function as alcoholic ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Functional: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applies to drinks that serve some kind of mind- or mood-altering purpose beyond basic hydration. Typically, this means beverages that contain adaptogens and\/or nootropics (see also: Adaptogens; Nootropics). Some people also consider infused beverages (see also: Infused) to be part of this category\u2014they are, in many ways, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extremely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> functional\u2014but many do not. In the world of soft drinks, \u201cfunctional\u201d tends to mean \u201ccontaining pre- or probiotics,\u201d but this is not usually the case when describing alcohol alternatives (see also: Nonalcoholic; Alcohol alternative).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Infused beverage: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In theory, \u201cinfusing\u201d means to steep something (fruit, herbs, garlic, coffee beans) in some kind of liquid (water, oil, grain alcohol) for flavor and\/or nutritional benefits. But in the realm of nonalcoholic drinks, \u201cinfused beverage\u201d typically refers to only one type of infusion: THC, a psychoactive chemical in cannabis. In part, the label was devised to avoid violating the terms of service of social media platforms like Instagram.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Kava: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known for its calming and mood-enhancing effects\u2014it gets compared to Xanax\u2014kava, a drink made from the ground roots of the kava shrub, has been used socially and ceremonially for centuries in the Pacific Islands, and more recently has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/12\/21\/nyregion\/stressed-new-yorkers-take-to-kava-natures-xanax.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gaining popularity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as an alcohol alternative in the United States. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/feel-free-drink-kava-kratom-addiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consuming kava is legal, if unregulated.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>N\/A, nonalcoholic, nonalc, spirit-free, zero-proof: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not-entirely-but-mostly interchangeable terms used to describe nonalcoholic drinks, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-27\/chapter-I\/subchapter-A\/part-7\/subpart-E\/section-7.65\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">federal regulations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> define as drinks that have less than 0.5 percent ABV. Nobody agrees on the best term, although experts will debate their relative merits passionately. Still, they all mean pretty much the same thing: This drink does not, colloquially speaking, have booze in it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Nootropics: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural and synthetic substances that supposedly boost one\u2019s cognitive abilities. Caffeine is by far the most common example\u2014everybody\u2019s doing it\u2014but other players include 5-HTP, GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) and L-theanine. Some nootropics are also adaptogens\u2014lion\u2019s mane qualifies as both\u2014and as a result, the two categories are often lumped together. (See also: Adaptogens; Functional.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Zebra striping: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This British term refers to the practice of alternating nonalcoholic and alcoholic drinks throughout an evening.
