America and Americans are rich, they say. That wages are up, quality of life is high, and progress marches on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all know that isn\u2019t quite true, but it\u2019s hard to pinpoint the problem.<\/p><div class=\"g g-1\"><div class=\"g-single a-10\"><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"MTAsMSwxLDYw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chemicalfreebody.com\/macro\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"334\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.activistpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/GREEN-85-400x334-1.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I just finished a great book recommended by\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/open.substack.com\/users\/46387931-matt-bracken?utm_source=mentions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Matt Bracken<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/open.substack.com\/users\/45474107-michael-yon?utm_source=mentions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michael Yon<\/a>. It\u2019s called,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Path-Between-Seas-Creation-1870-1914-ebook\/dp\/B002FK3U4Q\/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Path Between The Seas<\/a>\u00a0and it\u2019s all about the creation of the Panama Canal between 1881-1914. The book is well written and researched, and several facts stuck out for me. There\u2019s so much to tell, but this isn\u2019t a book review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I merely want to share a single important observation from the book. Being a great researcher, the author quotes a lot of dollar amounts associated with the project \u2013 including salaries of Americans who worked on the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By today\u2019s standards, the amount seems small, but if you do the math something shocking becomes apparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early 1900s, when a man said he earned a dollar, it\u00a0<strong>meant something real<\/strong>. Back then,\u00a0<strong>$1 was 1\/20th of an ounce of gold<\/strong>. That wasn\u2019t just a metaphor\u2014it was the monetary system. So when someone earned $3,000, they were, in fact, earning\u00a0<strong>150 ounces of gold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That one detail changes the way you read the book and reveals the single greatest ill destroying our society today. Broken money has impoverished all of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-engineer-who-earned-more-than-you\">The Engineer Who Earned More Than You<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In\u00a0<em>The Path Between the Seas<\/em>, David McCullough describes life in the Panama Canal Zone around 1910. He notes that a junior civil engineer\u2014just 2 or 3 years into his career\u2014was paid\u00a0<strong>$250 a month<\/strong>, or\u00a0<strong>$3,000 a year<\/strong>. Working on the canal project was hazardous so the engineer earned $25 more a month than he would have earned if he\u2019d stayed in the US as a form of hazard pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also received:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>42 paid vacation days<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>30 paid sick days<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>No income tax<\/strong>, because the U.S. didn\u2019t have one yet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s put that in terms of hard money:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>$3,000 \u00f7 $20 = 150 oz of gold<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At today\u2019s price of\u00a0<strong>$3,000\/oz<\/strong>, that\u2019s\u00a0<strong>$450,000\/year<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re not talking about Thomas Edison here, we\u2019re talking a normal junior engineer. Now compare the actual value he received for his work to a civil engineer today with similar experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a class=\"image-link image2\" href=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7373af2d-29b4-4bfa-8622-e564137d42ee_693x147.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"693\" height=\"147\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7373af2d-29b4-4bfa-8622-e564137d42ee_693x147.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br\/>That\u2019s an\u00a0<strong>88% collapse<\/strong>\u00a0in gold-based compensation\u2014for the same job, same skill level, and same experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-top-1-of-income-earners-today\">Top 1% of Income Earners Today<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To be in the top 1% of individual income earners in the United States in 2025, you need to earn at least\u00a0<strong>$407,500 per year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s context this makes no sense. This guy wasn\u2019t a finance bro or a venture capitalist. He was just a guy with a skill doing his job, and yet, the gold equivalent of his 1910 income earned him more than 99% of all individuals today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Even a Telegraph Operator Was Rich by Today\u2019s Standards<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There were only about 150 American women working in the Canal Zone. The highest-paid among them was a\u00a0<strong>telegraph operator<\/strong>, earning\u00a0<strong>$125\/month<\/strong>, or\u00a0<strong>$1,500\/year<\/strong>\u2014tax free, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>$1,500 \u00f7 20 = 75 oz of gold<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At today\u2019s price of $3,000\/oz, that\u2019s\u00a0<strong>$225,000\/year<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Compare that to a hypothetical modern equivalent\u2014let\u2019s say a mid-skill, technical support desk job paying $45,000\/year before tax:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a class=\"image-link image2\" href=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fc0faa4e7-53f0-46ec-8eb0-dbb9f185e41a_691x157.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"691\" height=\"157\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fc0faa4e7-53f0-46ec-8eb0-dbb9f185e41a_691x157.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br\/>The decline in a role like this, for some reason, seems even more shocking than with Mr. Junior Engineer.\u00a0<strong>Today\u2019s equivalent role earns 84% less real wealth<\/strong>\u00a0than it did in 1910.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By today\u2019s standards this telegraph operator would be extremely well off. Her gold-backed dollar income then would easily put her ahead of 95% of Americans today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a 2024 Bankrate survey, the average American believes they need to earn approximately\u00a0<strong>$186,000 per year<\/strong>\u00a0to live comfortably \u2013 in the ballpark of what Ms. Telegraph Operator earned in 1910.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet, the median annual income for full-time workers, which stands at about $79,000. Plenty of Americans are feeling the pinch and far too many are flat broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So What Happened?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Two massive changes gutted the American middle class:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.\u00a0<strong>The Federal Income Tax (1913)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Before 1913, Americans kept every dollar they earned. Afterward, the government took an ever-growing share. What began as a small tax on the rich is now a mechanism to extract wealth from almost everyone who works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.\u00a0<strong>The End of Gold for Americans (1933)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1933, FDR made it illegal for Americans to own or redeem gold. Overnight, people lost access to the one form of money that couldn\u2019t be manipulated. From that point on, the dollar became a fiat instrument\u2014its value determined by political convenience, not economic discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Measuring the Hollowing Out<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Using gold as the yardstick makes the theft obvious:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A junior engineer in 1910 earned\u00a0<strong>150 oz of gold<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Today, he earns\u00a0<strong>18.7 oz<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A telegraph operator earned\u00a0<strong>75 oz<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Her modern equivalent earns\u00a0<strong>12 oz<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These weren\u2019t executives or tycoons. They were skilled professionals and civil servants. Today, the same careers pay a\u00a0<strong>fraction of the real wealth<\/strong>, and most of it is taxed, inflated, or regulated away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This Wasn\u2019t an Accident<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>People like to blame capitalism or globalization. But that\u2019s not the root cause. The decline began when we transitioned from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sound money to fiat money<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Voluntary savings to forced taxation<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A culture of independence to one of managed dependence<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The system didn\u2019t fail. It evolved to serve different masters\u2014and the productive class has been footing the bill ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We weren\u2019t always this poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were made this poor\u2014by law, by design, and by a monetary system built on fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we want to reverse the damage, we need to start by recognizing how much was taken\u2014and how little of it was ever honestly debated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Best,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matt Smith<\/p>\n\n            \n        <\/div>\r\n<br>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What a Junior Engineer Can Teach Us About a Time When America Really Was Great We\u2019re told we\u2019ve never had it better.
