{"id":232994,"date":"2025-05-09T15:58:27","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T15:58:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/goodyear-sees-itself-in-prime-position-to-capitalize-on-trump-auto-tariffs-we-have-a-lot-of-opportunity-in-front-of-us\/"},"modified":"2025-05-09T15:58:27","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T15:58:27","slug":"goodyear-sees-itself-in-prime-position-to-capitalize-on-trump-auto-tariffs-we-have-a-lot-of-opportunity-in-front-of-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=232994","title":{"rendered":"Goodyear sees itself in prime position to capitalize on Trump auto tariffs: \u2018We have a lot of opportunity in front of us\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":" \r\n<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-2162498514-e1746802371404.jpg?w=2048\" \/><br>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The largest U.S. manufacturer of tires for car companies <\/strong>and the consumer replacement market believes its heavy North American footprint makes it ideally placed to outcompete its foreign peers like <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/michelin\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michelin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/bridgestone\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bridgestone<\/a> and Continental. &#8220;Goodyear\u2019s U.S. tariff exposure equates to about one quarter of the average for the industry,&#8221; its finance chief told investors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Goodyear Tire and Rubber, the largest tire supplier in the United States, believes its strong North American production footprint will help it outperform its three main competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company is benefiting from a broad portfolio of tires, including those for luxury cars, electric vehicles, and light trucks supplied to carmakers, as well as a growing exposure to the consumer market for replacement tires in the more profitable 18-inch and larger segments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the company realized $200 million in savings, the most in any reporting period since it began its Goodyear Forward restructuring program six quarters prior at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.goodyear.com\/goodyear-announces-new-directors-and-strategic-and-operational-review\">behest<\/a>\u00a0of activist money manager\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/elliott-sends-letter-and-presentation-to-the-board-of-goodyear-301822226.html\">Elliott Investment<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLooking ahead, it\u2019s nearly certain that we will continue to see some volatility in our markets related to U.S. trade policy,\u201d chief executive Mark Stewart told investors during the first quarter earnings call.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor Goodyear, as the largest U.S. manufacturer already delivering on a turnaround through a major transformation program, it\u2019s also clear that we have a lot of opportunity in front of us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stewart\u2019s tire maker competes predominantly with Michelin of France, Japan\u2019s Bridgestone and Continental of Germany. Smaller rivals include <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/pirelli\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pirelli<\/a>, Yokohama, Nokian and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/sumitomo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sumitomo<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total U.S. passenger car tire market\u2014including both volumes sold to carmakers and the consumer replacement market\u2014amounts to 300 million tires, of which just over half are estimated to be sourced from countries outside North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By comparison, Goodyear supplies about 60 million tires annually to the U.S. market, with only 12% of that exposed to Trump\u2019s new Section 232 automotive sector tariffs. Management argues that its factories in Canada and Mexico are fully compliant with the USMCA free trade area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn effect this means that Goodyear\u2019s U.S. tariff exposure equates to about one quarter of the average for the industry. This is no doubt a significant advantage for our U.S. business going forward,\u201d Christina Zamarro, finance chief said during the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two out of three asset sales finalized with only synthetic rubber ops left<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite declining revenue and operating profit, Q1 swung from a loss to a $115 million net profit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This included a $260 million\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.goodyear.com\/2025-02-03-Goodyear-Completes-Divestiture-Of-Off-The-Road-OTR-Tire-Business\">windfall profit from the sale<\/a>\u00a0of its business supplying off-the-road (OTR) tires for construction, mining and other heavy-duty vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More one-off gains could potentially lift results in the current second quarter and beyond.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just this week, Goodyear&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.goodyear.com\/2025-05-07-Goodyear-Completes-Sale-of-Dunlop-Brand\">finalized the divestment<\/a>&nbsp;of its Dunlop brand to Sumitomo Rubber on Wednesday for a $526 million purchase price as well as further compensation to cover miscellaneous costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across both transactions, Goodyear collected gross cash proceeds of $1.6 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, Zamarro said Goodyear\u2019s Chemical business, which generates roughly $1 billion in annual revenue from the sale of synthesized rubber, remains under strategic review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are engaged with multiple interested parties on this potential transaction,\u201d she said, reaffirming she expected at least another $360 million in gross proceeds at minimum for Chemical.<\/p>\n<p>This story was originally featured on <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/09\/fortune-500-goodyear-tire-in-prime-position-to-capitalize-on-trump-auto-tariff\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fortune.com<\/a><\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Goodyear Tire and Rubber, the largest tire supplier in the United States, believes its strong North American production footprint will help it outperform its three main competitors.
