Here, even the eyes are soft, lending the entire face a somewhat etherial look.<\/p>\n<p>What is present, however, are rough brushy textures throughout \u2013 a fascinating contrast to the softly defined edges.<\/p>\n<p>This painting was also notable at the time in the presentation of of his model as a full length portrait. This was a luxurious treatment usually reserved for portraits of the elite of society, not a not a relatively undistinguished Irish immigrant \u2013 an \u201cordinary\u201d girl.<\/p>\n<p>The painting is in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nga.gov\/artworks\/12198-symphony-white-no-1-white-girl\">National Gallery of Art, DC<\/a>, which offers both a zoomable and downloadable image.
