{"id":231206,"date":"2025-05-08T18:12:29","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T18:12:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/insurance\/zurich-buys-innovative-global-aggregate-reinsurance-including-collateralized-capacity\/"},"modified":"2025-05-08T18:12:29","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T18:12:29","slug":"zurich-buys-innovative-global-aggregate-reinsurance-including-collateralized-capacity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=231206","title":{"rendered":"Zurich buys &#8220;innovative&#8221; global aggregate reinsurance, including collateralized capacity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>European headquartered re\/insurer Zurich took advantage of market conditions to buy a global aggregate reinsurance cover at the April 1st renewal, which the firm\u2019s CFO called \u201cinnovative\u201d and said it included alternative capacity from collateralized markets.<br \/><span id=\"more-129329\"\/><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"129343\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artemis.bm\/news\/zurich-buys-innovative-global-aggregate-reinsurance-including-collateralized-capacity\/attachment\/zurich-group-logo\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/www.artemis.bm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/zurich-group-logo.png\" data-orig-size=\"800,500\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"zurich-group-logo\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/www.artemis.bm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/zurich-group-logo-300x188.png\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/www.artemis.bm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/zurich-group-logo.png\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-129343\" alt=\"zurich-group-logo\" width=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artemis.bm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/zurich-group-logo.png 800w, https:\/\/www.artemis.bm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/zurich-group-logo-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/www.artemis.bm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/zurich-group-logo-768x480.png 768w, https:\/\/www.artemis.bm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/zurich-group-logo-200x125.png 200w, https:\/\/www.artemis.bm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/zurich-group-logo-350x219.png 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/>During an analyst call today, Zurich\u2019s Group CFO Claudia Cordioli also disclosed that the firm bought an additional $100 million of top-layer cover at 1\/1 as well.<\/p>\n<p>The new global aggregate reinsurance attaches at $850 million in losses and covers all territories for Zurich, designed to moderate its losses over the course of the risk period for more frequent and smaller catastrophe loss events, so working alongside its main occurrence excess-of-loss tower that would kick-in for very large catastrophes.<\/p>\n<p>Cordioli explained that the aggregate reinsurance was secured from both traditional and alternative markets, including collateralized capacity, so presumably from insurance-linked securities (ILS) markets or investors.<\/p>\n<p>Zurich used to have an aggregate reinsurance cover in place, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artemis.bm\/news\/zurich-opts-to-non-renew-its-cat-aggregate-reinsurance-for-2023\/\">but stopped renewing that in 2023<\/a>, opting instead to focus on adding more top-layer and peak peril protection at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Back then the insurer had said that it felt the costs of purchasing the aggregate reinsurance were too high for that layer of coverage, feeling it could retain more of that risk anyway.<\/p>\n<p>But now, seemingly reinsurance pricing and the appetite of traditional and collateralized markets has encouraged Zurich to reinstate a global aggregate catastrophe reinsurance treaty in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the analyst call Zurich CFO Cordioli said, \u201cWe\u2019ve been buying in January an additional top layer on top of the usual programme for $100 million of capacity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then the second thing which we\u2019ve done in April, taking advantage of the good underwriting, obviously, from the Zurich team, but also the favourable price environment, we\u2019ve been buying a global aggregate that will protect us in in lower layers, for intuitively I would say 1-in-4, 1-in-5 type of scenarios.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Going on to say, \u201cI think it\u2019s a testament to the really great underwriting by the Zurich team, and in particular, the progress that has been made in the US with respect to the cat exposure. But it\u2019s also a fact that we\u2019ve been able to negotiate in the current favourable environment also the aggregate cover, which is a very positive step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She explained that the new aggregate reinsurance covers all geographies, saying, \u201cI think it\u2019s a very good step taking into account the robustness of our underwriting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Cordioli disclosed that collateralized capacity makes up part of the aggregate cover for Zurich, saying, \u201cWe were able to place it the way we wanted it, so leveraging both alternative capacity, collateralized capacity and traditional reinsurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adding, \u201cIt\u2019s quite an innovative deal and I\u2019m very happy about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked where the new aggregate reinsurance attaches for the year from April, Cordioli said, \u201cIt\u2019s one in four to one in five, and I believe it\u2019s $850 million on a global level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cordioli also said during the analyst call, \u201cI think we\u2019re very well equipped with the additional cat aggregate, but also the top layers that we bought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I feel very comfortable where we are in terms of net catastrophe position.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"printfriendly pf-button pf-button-content pf-alignleft\">\n                    <a href=\"#\" rel=\"nofollow\" onclick=\"if (!window.__cfRLUnblockHandlers) return false;
