autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pfx.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\">PFX<\/a> has released its VFX breakdown of an unusual continuous three-and-a-half-minute shot from carjacking thriller <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Locked_(film)\" target=\"_blank\">Locked<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The precisely choreographed shot saw the VFX studio process the footage from a complex greenscreen shoot, creating digital doubles of the vehicle and its surrounding environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Creating a one-shot wonder<\/strong><br \/>Locked follows a young carjacker trapped in a high-tech SUV by a mysterious sociopath who wants to show him the consequences of his lifestyle. <\/p>\n<p>For PFX, the greatest technical challenge was the continuous 3.5-minute shot that introduces the carjacker (Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd) as he steals the SUV from a parking lot at the start of the film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the sequence involved a parking lot with a busy urban background, filming on location would\u2019ve made it extremely difficult to clean up all the distractions,\u201d said VFX Supervisor Jindrich Cervenka. \u201cWe decided to use a greenscreen stage to maintain control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"full-width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/250508_PFX_VFXBreakdown_Locked_f.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-167076\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/250508_PFX_VFXBreakdown_Locked_f.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/250508_PFX_VFXBreakdown_Locked_f-500x250.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/250508_PFX_VFXBreakdown_Locked_f-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/250508_PFX_VFXBreakdown_Locked_f-610x305.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/250508_PFX_VFXBreakdown_Locked_f-640x320.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/250508_PFX_VFXBreakdown_Locked_f-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\"\/> <\/p>\n<p><strong>Choreographing the live shoot<\/strong><br \/>Six crew members disassembled and reassembled parts of the car on the stage, avoiding the eight RED cameras that captured 360-degree footage of the shot. <\/p>\n<p>To create a natural parallax, PFX\u2019s artists placed the primary greenscreen six meters from the car, with another a few meters further away. <\/p>\n<p>This made keeping track of Skarsg\u00e5rd and objects in the foreground tricky, so PFX used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dequalizer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">3DEqualizer<\/a> to create an accurate 3D track of the entire shot, including all the windows and mirrors, then matchmoved the shot to incorporate the car\u2019s numerous moving parts. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Creating digital doubles of the SUV and surrounding environment<\/strong><br \/>For any parts of the sequence that couldn\u2019t be achieved practically, the PFX team used Houdini to create a digital double of the SUV. <\/p>\n<p>PFX was also given a Lidar scan of the real-life parking lot and 360-degree footage captured by the RED cameras, which was processed in Houdini to create the 3D background for the scene.<\/p>\n<p>As the final step, shots and background projections were composited in Nuke, where the team also removed green spill and reflections from the cameras and crew.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part of over 750 shots created by PFX for the movie<\/strong><br \/>In total, PFX delivered 750 VFX shots for Locked, created by a team of 75 artists from PFX\u2019s Prague, Bratislava and Warsaw facilities over a period of four months.<\/p>\n<p>To manage workloads across each location, PFX used Crossbow, its in-house tool, to organize each artist\u2019s tasks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pfx.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\">Visit PFX\u2019s website<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Have your say on this story by following CG Channel on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cgchannel\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thecgchannel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/theCGchannel\" target=\"_blank\">X (formerly Twitter)<\/a>.
