Button up your patient engagement by developing a welcome campaign for new patients:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Now lets take a look at your costs. Having a complete understanding of where you\u2019re spending is equally important to boosting profitability.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>Monitoring and decreasing costs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Today, a general dentist\u2019s overhead <a href=\"https:\/\/blatchford.com\/resources\/dental-practice-management-articles\/three-ways-to-better-manage-overhead\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">averages 75% of income<\/span><\/a>. That means for every dollar you bring in, you\u2019ll only net 25 cents. Like we just mentioned, if you don\u2019t have a solid hold on your collections, this ratio can decrease even more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>Overhead costs<\/strong> are all of the costs associated with running your practice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">To monitor your overhead, calculate each expense as a percent of income. Example of overhead costs might be:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Staff<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Lab<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Rent<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Equipment<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Office Supplies<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Dental Supplies<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Marketing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Your staff will be your largest overhead expense by a good margin (this is true for almost any business).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">With that being said, most folks try to decrease costs by doing things like renegotiating supply contracts. In reality this may only decrease 20% of a cost that makes up 5% of your overhead expenses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">That\u2019s not an effective strategy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The real way to decrease overhead is through building systems related to your staff &#8211; making them <a href=\"https:\/\/blatchford.com\/resources\/dental-practice-management-articles\/three-ways-to-better-manage-overhead\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">as efficient as possible<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>Decreasing the number of no-shows<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Your no-show rate, or FTA (failed to attend), is a huge cost driver for your practice. You should aim for this to be less than 10% of booked appointments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">To reduce your no-show rate, there are a few things you\u2019ll need to do:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Develop a response time. A simple system to remind patients will typically do the trick.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Analyze the profile of the clients where FTA is typical, then tailor your marketing away from that type of patient. For example, have you found that many of your no-shows are unemployed? Make employment benefits prominent in your marketing materials.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>All of this boils down to your profitability percentage<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Finally, to get a holistic view of your profitability, monitor the improvement of your profit margin (net income \/ total revenue).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">If you\u2019ve hired a strategic consultant, at the end of the day you should be measuring them by an increase in your profit margin.
