{"id":230715,"date":"2025-05-08T12:24:22","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T12:24:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/agriculture\/national-ag-law-center-attorneys-to-provide-ag-law-update-during-mid-south-online-bonus-session-national-agricultural-law-center\/"},"modified":"2025-05-08T12:24:22","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T12:24:22","slug":"national-ag-law-center-attorneys-to-provide-ag-law-update-during-mid-south-online-bonus-session-national-agricultural-law-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=230715","title":{"rendered":"National Ag Law Center attorneys to provide ag law update during Mid-South online bonus session \u2013 National Agricultural Law Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>By Drew Viguet<br \/>National Agricultural Law Center<br \/>U of A System Division of Agriculture<\/p>\n<p>May 7, 2025<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fast facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NALC\u2019s Elizabeth Rumley, Brigit Rollins will lead conference \u201cEarly Bird\u201d session<\/li>\n<li>Presentation will recap recent legal developments in ag law and policy<\/li>\n<li>Conference registration is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalaglawcenter.org\/midsouth2025\/\">online<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. \u2014 A wave of legal developments \u2014 from foreign ownership of agricultural land to animal confinement laws and pesticide legislation \u2014 is shaping agriculture, and the Mid-South conference\u2019s online \u201cEarly Bird\u201d program will offer insight into these key issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen significant developments over the last couple of years, at both the state and federal level, that impact agricultural producers,\u201d said Elizabeth Rumley, senior staff attorney at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalaglawcenter.org\/\">National Agricultural Law Center<\/a>, or NALC. \u201c2024 was one of the busiest years in agricultural law in a long time, and things haven\u2019t slowed down in 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rumley and NALC Staff Attorney Brigit Rollins will co-present the session, \u201cHalfway There: Mid-Year Mid-South Review of Legal Developments,\u201d during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalaglawcenter.org\/midsouth2025\/\">12<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Annual Mid-South Agricultural and Environmental Law Conference<\/a>\u00a0\u201cEarly Bird\u201d online event. The presentation will be the closing session on Wednesday, May 14. The \u201cEarly Bird\u201d offers bonus continuing legal education credit ahead of the main Mid-South conference on June 5-6 in Memphis, Tennessee. The main conference is also available to livestream.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 Mid-South conference \u2014 along with the 2025\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalaglawcenter.org\/western2025\/\">Western Water, Agricultural, and Environmental Law Conference<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 is hosted by the NALC and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture Foundation, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasda.org\/nasda-foundation\/\">NASDA Foundation<\/a>. Attendees who register for the Mid-South by May 13 are eligible to attend the \u201cEarly Bird.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Registration for the conference is available online at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalaglawcenter.org\/midsouth2025\/\">nationalaglawcenter.org\/midsouth2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During their session, Rumley and Rollins will discuss topics including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Foreign ownership of agricultural land<\/strong>: A topic that has increased in attention in recent years,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalaglawcenter.org\/foreign-investments-in-ag\/\">foreign ownership<\/a>is one of the most active issues at both the state and federal level. Last year, 14 states enacted a foreign ownership law or amended an existing one. There is ongoing federal activity on the subject, and nearly three dozen states have proposed legislation in 2025. Kentucky, Idaho and Utah have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalaglawcenter.org\/soil-for-sale-state-legislative-efforts-to-restrict-foreign-investments-part-seven\/\">enacted<\/a>\u00a0or amended statutes relating to foreign ownership this year, with other states likely to follow suit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proposition 12<\/strong>: Otherwise known as \u201cProp 12,\u201d which was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalaglawcenter.org\/prop12scotus\/\">passed<\/a>\u00a0by California voters in 2018 and bans the sale of all pork products from pigs that were not produced according to certain confinement standards. The National Pork Producers Council challenged Prop 12 all the way up to the Supreme Court, which upheld the law in 2023. Senator Joni Ernst (R- Iowa) has introduceda\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.congress.gov%2Fbill%2F119th-congress%2Fsenate-bill%2F1326&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cdviguet%40uark.edu%7Ce4da766c34684ffbd6a908dd8ce8e467%7C79c742c4e61c4fa5be89a3cb566a80d1%7C0%7C0%7C638821654083869888%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=3rrs89recGzQ9kpQr%2FeQgI00sN50zgxH%2F1Ws73vkLcc%3D&amp;reserved=0\">bill<\/a>\u00a0intended to prevent states from passing Prop 12-type laws.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pesticides<\/strong>: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released its final insecticide strategy on April 29. Similar to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalaglawcenter.org\/epa-publishes-highly-anticipated-final-herbicide-strategy\/\">final herbicide strategy<\/a>\u00a0released in 2024, the final insecticide strategy focuses on reducing pesticide spray drift and runoff to better protect species listed as \u201cthreatened\u201d or \u201cendangered\u201d under the Endangered Species Act.
