Where Writers Write<\/b>\u00a0is a series that features authors as they showcase their writing spaces using short form essay, photos, and\/or video. As a lover of books and all of the hard work that goes into creating them, I thought it would be fun to see where the authors roll up their sleeves and make the magic happen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is\u00a0Tom McAllister.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

A\u00a0<\/span>2006 graduate of
\nthe Iowa Writers Workshop, Tom McAllister is the co-creator of the
\npopular\u00a0<\/span>Book Fight!<\/i>\u00a0podcast where writers talk honestly about
\nbooks, writing, and the literary world. He\u2019s also the author of the critically
\nacclaimed novels\u00a0<\/span>How to Be Safe<\/i>\u2014which Ron Charles praised in\u00a0<\/span>The
\nWashington Post<\/i>\u00a0as \u201clike nothing else I\u2019ve read\u201d\u2014and\u00a0<\/span>The Young
\nWidower\u2019s Handbook<\/i>\u2014which\u00a0<\/span>Kirkus<\/i>\u00a0called \u201ca quirky,
\nwell-told fiction debut\u201d\u2014as well as the memoir\u00a0<\/span>Bury Me in My Jersey<\/i>\u2014which\u00a0<\/span>Publishers
\nWeekly<\/i>\u00a0declared \u201ca feverish coming-of-age tale of a gridiron groupie
\nknown as a Philly fanatic.\u201d McAllister\u2019s latest work is just as surprising,
\nlively, skillful, and human.<\/span><\/p>\n

My wife
\nand I moved to a smaller home in June 2020, a time of great uncertainty for
\nobvious reasons, and although this was not close to the biggest challenge in my
\nlife, I was forced to replace my desk. My previous desk was a hulking,
\nutilitarian throwback, the kind of desk my father would have had at the office
\njobs he held late in his life, with big bulky file drawers and a flat,
\nunassuming finish. It weighed, conservatively, 7000 pounds. On moving day, it
\ntook three professionals to maneuver it out of the old house, into the truck
\nand then into our attached garage, because there was no chance it could fit
\ninto my new office. The new house is smaller because we wanted a smaller house,
\nwanted to simplify our lives at least a little bit. In the old place, my home
\noffice was a large bedroom, once used by a child who had a wallpaper border
\nwith teddy bear print wrapping around the room (the previous owners had tried
\nto scrape it off, but gave up on the corners, and in the eight years we lived
\nthere, we never tried to remove it; my guess is it\u2019s still there). In the new
\nhouse, a Cape Cod with finished attic, my office is a small, trapezoidal space
\ncarved out into the east-facing side of the house. Perfectly functional, if not
\nglamorous. The desk couldn\u2019t even fit up the stairs, let alone into the room. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019d gotten the desk for free, from a
\nlocal business called Office Furniture Outlet, when my wife and I appeared on a
\nshort-lived home renovation show called Moving Up<\/i>. On Moving Up<\/i>,
\n<\/i>you follow a chain of three families: Family A sells to Family B, who sells
\nto Family C. We were Family C, the young couple just starting out. We agreed to
\nbe on the show because I erroneously thought it would be fun, and because we
\nwould get a number of household items free or at steep discounts: 20 gallons of
\npaint, two portable air conditioners, a few area rugs, office furniture. I
\nforget what else. I liked that old desk because it was free, and flat, and it
\nheld my things, but I had no particular attachment to it. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>After the move, I decided to splurge
\non a mid-century modern desk from a popular retailer. I told myself, \u201cYou
\ndeserve this,\u201d whatever that means (if it\u2019s even true). Because of covid, there
\nwas a long delay in my receiving the desk, and in the interim, I placed my
\ncomputer on top of a rectangular folding table that rattled every time I
\npressed a key. Beneath me, in the garage, was the old desk that I was trying to
\nsell for cheap on Facebook Marketplace. This new desk looks nicer, I think, and
\nit is also flat and it holds my things. <\/span><\/p>\n

My
\nwife would tell you that it holds too many things, that my propensity for piles
\nstresses her out, but she tolerates my piles so long as they are mostly
\ncontained within this room. The piles mostly have functions. The two hardcover
\nbooks to the right are Asne Seierstad books (both excellent) that serve as an
\nideal pedestal for my computer when I am in a Zoom meeting or recording a
\npodcast. Behind that, I keep the Oxford American Writer\u2019s Thesaurus<\/a>, the most useful reference book
\nI\u2019ve ever owned. The pile to the left is a stack of documents, a mixture of
\ndrafts on which I need to make edits and various items that need filing at some
\npoint, though if I\u2019m being honest may never be filed. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nthese photos you also see Larry, the lamp, rescued from the trash at my aunt\u2019s house
\nmany years ago. It felt criminal to let an artifact like this disappear. Larry,
\nfor the record, also weighs about 3000 pounds. The shelf to the left of the
\ndesk holds mostly teaching materials, among other doodads and keepsakes and
\nnonsense. The shelf has followed us for all 20 years we\u2019ve lived together, part
\nof a furniture set inherited from my wife\u2019s mother. Behind me, there is another
\nbookshelf, purchased at a consignment store and painted in the back yard, one
\nof many attempts to control the pile situation in my house. I wish the rug were
\nnicer but it\u2019s fine. It\u2019s all fine, it\u2019s all perfectly functional, which, as
\nsomeone who doesn\u2019t get especially romantic about the creative space, is all I
\nneed. I\u2019m not a writer who waits on the muse and waxes poetic about inspiration.
\nI think of myself as workmanlike in my approach to the job, just someone who
\nsits down and types and hopes for the best, and then gets back at it again the
\nnext day hoping to make it all a little better. Still, no matter what ends up
\nin the room, or what functions each item performs, I do tell myself
\nperiodically: you deserve this. I\u2019m not sure it\u2019s actually true, but you have
\nto say it sometimes. You try to prove you deserve it by the work you do in the
\nspace. You earn your small comforts by not wasting them.<\/span><\/p>\n
