Nipples festooned with fishing lures.<\/p>\n<p>To behold the early photographic self-portraits of Fakir Musafar, born Roland Loomis in 1930, is to be awed by a uniquely transgressive, and prescient, vision. In his latest documentary, director Angelo Madsen\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abodytolivein.com\">A Body to Live In<\/a><\/em> embraces the artist\u2019s many contradictions \u2014 taking a multilayered perspective on Musafar\u2019s life to creatively excavate his role as a pioneer of extreme body modification.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>As a teen, Musafar converted his mother\u2019s fruit cellar into a darkroom, where he took semi-nude self-portraits in various states of erotic bondage, showing off his secretly pierced and tattooed body and often lounging on a bed of nails. Angelo Madsen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>In a time when tattoos and piercings have become mainstream, <em>A Body to Live In <\/em>reminds us of the complicated, often controversial, roots of body art \u2014 along with its enduring connection to queer communities and gender nonconformity. Collaging archival footage, interviews with Musafar\u2019s contemporaries, and\u00a0 a selection of the artist\u2019s typewritten poems, Madsen stitches together the artist\u2019s unlikely rise from Korean War draftee to an icon of San Francisco\u2019s underground gay and kink scenes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We also learn about Musafar\u2019s lead role in the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopedia.com\/fashion\/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps\/modern-primitives\">Modern Primitive<\/a>\u201d movement, and its lasting subcultural resonance. His print zine <em>Piercing Fans International Quarterly<\/em>, which celebrated the intersection of BDSM and body modification, would later spin off into a more spiritual direction that shaped the Modern Primitive subculture: \u201cWhen you make an opening in somebody\u2019s body,\u201d he lectures in one of many voiceovers, \u201cyou\u2019re making an opening in a psychic body.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No matter one\u2019s edgy appetites, much of the imagery in <em>A Body to Live In <\/em>is not for the faint of <em>art<\/em>. We witness Musafar\u2019s wife, artist Cl\u00e9o Dubois, undergo a clitoral piercing meant to heal her of the trauma of multiple sexual assaults. \u201cNo more rape!\u201d her companions shout to the beat of a drum in a bucolic setting. Angelo Madsen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As affecting as these rituals are, they clearly appropriate from Indigenous cultures \u2014 when he was young, Musafar was inspired by the traditions of the people of the Sissiton Sioux Indian Reservation, upon which his White family lived. The documentary acknowledges the ethical consequences of the Modern Primitives\u2019 practices, including a face-off between Musafar and Indigenous tribal leaders on a 1986 talk show. By 1993, three tribal groups publicly condemned appropriation; by 2003, the Lakota people \u201cformally banned non-Indigenous people from sacred rites.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>Just as Madsen resists indulging in nostalgia for a time before the mainstream popularity of gay subcultures, he resists a moralizing revisionism toward the past. Musafar\u2019s own struggle with cancer is rendered with similar balance. Ultimately, <em>A Body to Live In<\/em> is a poetic, often unsettling film \u2014 one that invites us to consider whether \u201cthe whole purpose of life,\u201d as Musafar asserted on his deathbed, \u201cis to finally get out of a physical condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Upcoming screenings of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abodytolivein.com\/screenings.html\">A Body to Live In<\/a> <em>can be found on the film\u2019s website.<\/em><\/p>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<section id=\"block-27\" class=\"below-content widget widget_block\"\/>\t<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A neck coiled with rope.
