After considering but ultimately bailing on the technology for the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ray-ban-meta-smart-glasses-review-instagram-worthy-shades-070010365.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:first version of its smart glasses;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">first version of its smart glasses<\/a>, the company is now actively working on wearables that can identify nearby faces. Remember when <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2016-11-17-snapchat-spectacles-hands-on.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:being a &quot;Glasshole&quot;;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">being a &#8220;Glasshole&#8221;<\/a> was considered a faux pas?<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>The Information<\/em>, Meta has recently discussed adding software to its smart glasses that scans bystanders&#8217; faces and identifies people by name. The company has also reportedly considered adding the tech to future <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/metas-next-hardware-project-might-be-ai-infused-headphones-with-cameras-204741102.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:AI-powered earphones with built-in cameras;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">AI-powered earphones with built-in cameras<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Facial recognition tech would be part of a Meta feature dubbed internally as &#8220;super sensing.&#8221; The feature would build on <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/wearables\/meta-is-bringing-smart-glasses-live-translation-and-ai-to-more-people-184546291.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:the glasses' live AI feature;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the glasses&#8217; live AI feature<\/a>, which can only remain active for around half an hour (thanks to its battery). The glasses owner would have to opt in. But the person&#8217;s nearby company \u2014 those having their faces scanned and named \u2014 wouldn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>Making matters worse, bystanders might not even know they&#8217;re being scanned. The current Ray-Ban Meta glasses turn on a light while recording. It&#8217;s a privacy-focused feature likely spawned from Big Tech&#8217;s lessons from the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2014-06-27-google-glass-uk-data-protection-compliant.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Google Glass social backlash;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Google Glass social backlash<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But Meta is reportedly questioning whether future glasses should activate the light when the device is &#8220;super-sensing&#8221; them. Uh oh.<\/p>\n<p>Putting on a pair of glasses that gives you AI-powered superhuman memory might sound pretty cool. No need to remember things \u2014 just let the AI scan your environment and remind you! In April, the company changed its terms so that its current smart glasses will activate AI by default. The only way to opt out is to deactivate the &#8220;Hey Meta!&#8221; trigger phrase. Adding to the fun is a change that no longer lets glasses owners opt out of allowing the company to store and train on their voice recordings.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Information<\/em> draws a line from Trump&#8217;s reelection to Meta&#8217;s ethically dubious changes. The current Federal Trade Commission (FTC) isn&#8217;t keen on regulations that slow big businesses&#8217; profits.
