Aaron Trinder, director of Free Party: A Folk History, said: \u201cThis film is a unique look at a much-underrepresented moment in cultural history.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the last great unifying youth movement before the digital age, one that challenged the authorities, connected environmental awareness with music<\/a>, and questioned laws on land rights and trespass<\/a>,\u201d he continued. \u201cWith new laws criminalising trespass and protest across Europe, the story is more relevant than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

It comes against a modern-day backdrop of crisis in the UK\u2019s nightlife<\/a> industry, with the BBC reporting<\/a> that\u00a0around 400 British clubs \u2013 more than one-third of the total number \u2013\u00a0have closed in the past five years, as rising ticket and drink prices, rents, operating costs and changing habits in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic leading to financial struggles for music venues and nightclubs.<\/p>\n

Mark Angelo Harrison, co-founder of Spiral Tribe, added: \u201cThe British establishment buries people\u2019s history, celebrating the powerful while criminalising grassroots movements \u2014 just as it did with the Free Festival and Free Party scenes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis documentary uncovers the untold story of one of the UK\u2019s most outlawed cultural movements. Intelligent, independent, and defiant, it challenges the commodified idea of social space \u2014 and celebrates a movement that, despite relentless repression, keeps on bustin\u2019 new moves. A living history that doesn\u2019t miss a beat.\u201d<\/p>\n
