Even in the \u201940s, they were trying to call back \u2018the good old days\u2019 so I used that language deliberately in <em>Hardtack<\/em>,\u201d says Fortune. In his hands, timelessness becomes a reprieve from the onslaught of progress\u2019s clammy grip. In Fortune\u2019s photographs, mobile phones disappear without a trace, modernity nothing more than a fever dream from which you awake to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/an-ode-to-americas-legendary-cowboy-culture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cowboys<\/a>, kerosene lamps, rustic barns, praise ceremonies, and handmade quilts.  <\/p>\n<p>Although the photographs feel timeless, they do not feel old. Rather than contain the wisdom of ancestors passed from one generation to the next, the recipes endure because they are closely tied to survival. Within that lineage, Fortune finds his place alongside groundbreaking\u00a0Black American photographers including the aforementioned<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/gordon-parks-luminous-photos-of-black-american-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0Parks<\/a>, James Van Der Zee, Roy DeCarava, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/the-profundity-of-blackness-as-told-by-chester-higgins\">Prentice H. Polke<\/a>, whose pictures are shown alongside his in a second smaller room at the gallery.  <\/p>\n<p>Working across portraiture, documentary, still life, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/70s-lens-radicalised-photography-sultan-meyerowitz-goldin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">landscape<\/a>, Fortune crafts scenes that unfold through the panoramic sweep of Black American history, embedded in the earth itself. \u201cSo much of Oklahoma where I grew up, and where my family is native to, was a memory, and now there are people in midtown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/inside-manhattans-last-underground-gun-club\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Manhattan<\/a> looking at pictures of these places,\u201d Fortune says. \u201cThere is a reverence or visibility to it that I think is healing.
