autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What%E2%80%99s_the_difference_between_Life_Insurance_and_Mortgage_Protection\"\/><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What\u2019s the difference between Life Insurance and Mortgage Protection<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Is life insurance and mortgage protection the same thing?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>They both pay out if you die, but the amount they pay out is the significant difference.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Life_Insurance\"\/>Life Insurance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Life Insurance pays out a lump sum of money if you die.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The amount of cover is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fixed<\/span>.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Life insurance costs more than mortgage protection.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mortgage_Protection\"\/>Mortgage Protection<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mortgage Protection clears your mortgage if you die.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The amount of cover <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">reduces<\/span> over time.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mortgage protection costs less than life insurance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Typically, people purchase mortgage protection when they are getting a mortgage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mortgage Protection <a href=\"https:\/\/lion.ie\/mortgage-protection-insurance\/guide-to-mortgage-protection\/\">covers your bank\u2019s arse<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s mandatory if you\u2019re buying a house in Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Yes, you read that right: the banks make you take out an insurance policy that pays <em>them<\/em> money if <em>you<\/em> die.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019d say they\u2019re a bunch of scoundrels, but sure look it, I\u2019m sure you knew this already. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Really, it\u2019s all a bigger scam than those texts saying you\u2019re owed a tax refund.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>So, mortgage protection for a mortgage? That seems simple enough!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yeah, about that\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>You <em>can<\/em> buy life insurance for a mortgage if you like \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/lion.ie\/mortgage-protection-insurance\/you-dont-need-life-insurance-for-a-mortgage\/\">I say don\u2019t do it, <\/a>but you\u2019re the boss!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lion.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/review2404.png 473w, https:\/\/lion.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/review2404-300x82.png 300w\" src=\"https:\/\/lion.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/review2404.png\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-104391 lazyload\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-104391\" src=\"https:\/\/lion.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/review2404.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lion.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/review2404.png 473w, https:\/\/lion.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/review2404-300x82.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\"\/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Mortgage_Protection_Life_Insurance\"\/><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What is Mortgage Protection Life Insurance?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If you\u2019ve been perusing this here internet, you may have come across a bunch of similar phrases that seem like the same thing but maybe aren\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mortgage Insurance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mortgage Life Insurance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mortgage Life Cover. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mortgage Protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Decreasing Term Insurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reducing Term Insurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Life Home Cover<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Spoiler alert: they\u2019re all the same.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You might be wondering why the insurers (they of upstanding character and definitely-not-moral-dubiousness) would do this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In short, it\u2019s because if it\u2019s confusing, it makes it harder for you to know what you\u2019re buying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Thankfully, the insurers are starting to improve their communication skills, speaking more like actual humans. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Still, these phrases are a bit of a hangover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mortgage Protection is\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lion.ie\/learn\/types-of-life-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the cheapest type of Life Insurance<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> you can get \u2013 probably because there\u2019d be ructions if it were mandatory <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> very expensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Let\u2019s look at an example of Mortgage Protection in real life.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">John and Mary are in their thirties and so far are very happy together. They want to buy a house for \u20ac250,000 in Wexford. They moved back in with John\u2019s parents for a while to save the dreaded deposit. At one point, things got so rough they considered never buying and instead,\u00a0 becoming vagabonds because saving \u20ac25,000 in a short amount of time is a fate worse than death.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, they persevered and are seeking \u20ac250,000 in Mortgage Protection over 30 years \u2013 the duration of their mortgage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Their quote would look a bit like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"mortgage insurance quote\" width=\"495\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lion.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/MPLIQuote.png 495w, https:\/\/lion.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/MPLIQuote-300x229.png 300w\" src=\"https:\/\/lion.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/MPLIQuote.png\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15915 lazyload\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15915\" src=\"https:\/\/lion.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/MPLIQuote.png\" alt=\"mortgage insurance quote\" width=\"495\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lion.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/MPLIQuote.png 495w, https:\/\/lion.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/MPLIQuote-300x229.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Price-wise that doesn\u2019t seem too bad. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although if you take the cheapest (\u20ac22.32) and multiply it out by the lifetime of the mortgage (\u20ac22.32 x 12 x 30), you\u2019re looking at a hefty enough payment (\u20ac8,035) to our pals in insurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Some_more_fun_facts_about_Mortgage_Protection\"\/><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Some more fun facts about Mortgage Protection<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Some extra info that\u2019s important to know is that your cover reduces across the lifetime of your mortgage, but your premium is fixed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">How\u2019s that for fairness?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> With John and Mary, their initial cover is \u20ac250,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 5 years, their mortgage and Mortgage Protection would be around \u20ac240,000, and then it would continue to reduce until it reaches zero.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s not forget that this is all for your bank\u2019s benefit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This is also important if you\u2019re looking at Serious Illness Cover (SIC) from your bank too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You can bundle Mortgage Protection and Serious Illness Cover, but if you get ill, your payout GOES TO THE BANK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">So don\u2019t do it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/lion.ie\/life-insurance\/mortgage-protection-serious-illness-cover\/\">If you\u2019re considering SIC, add it to your life insurance policy, so you get the payout.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Likewise, you generally shouldn\u2019t get Mortgage Protection from your bank, even if they\u2019re insisting on it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>You don\u2019t have to. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your best bet is to go with a broker or get quotes from all the insurers yourself.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You <a href=\"https:\/\/lion.ie\/mortgage-protection-insurance\/best-mortgage-protection-quotes\/\">shouldn\u2019t buy Mortgage Protection from your bank<\/a> because:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They don\u2019t offer choice; they only offer policies from their own insurance company.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They are more expensive than brokers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If you buy a block policy from your bank and you ever want to switch to a new lender, they will cancel your Mortgage Protection. You\u2019ll need to reapply all over again. This time, they want to get \u20ac250,000 worth of Life Insurance each over 30 years, just in case they kill each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With Joint Life Insurance, they get one pay-out of \u20ac250k on the first death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If Mary and John are smart, they\u2019ll get Dual Life Insurance, which pays out on each death.
