{"id":227034,"date":"2025-05-06T16:05:05","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T16:05:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/activist\/crow-killing-contest-exposes-blind-spot-in-manitoba-animal-protection\/"},"modified":"2025-05-06T16:05:05","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T16:05:05","slug":"crow-killing-contest-exposes-blind-spot-in-manitoba-animal-protection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=227034","title":{"rendered":"Crow-Killing Contest Exposes Blind Spot in Manitoba Animal Protection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>WINNIPEG\u2014A bird and gopher-shooting contest planned for May 10 in Minnedosa exposes a legal blind spot in Manitoba, permitting intelligent and highly social animals such as crows and magpies to be killed in large numbers for cash prizes.<\/p>\n<p>The scheduled event is similar to another crow and magpie <a href=\"https:\/\/animaljustice.ca\/blog\/crows-magpies-will-be-shot-dead-in-mass-killing-contest-in-manitoba\">killing contest<\/a>\u00a0held last month, where the Chief Veterinary Office (CVO) declined to take action because it did not believe crows met the definition of \u201canimal\u201d under Manitoba\u2019s Animal Care Act (ACA), legislation that prohibits causing animals \u201cacute suffering, serious injury or harm, or extreme anxiety or distress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Act defines an \u2018animal\u2019 as any non-human living being with a developed nervous system, and crows, magpies, and gophers certainly meet that definition,\u201d said Kaitlyn Mitchell, Animal Justice\u2019s Manitoba-based director of legal advocacy. \u201cThe upcoming contest incentivizes shooting as many animals as possible, encouraging careless shooting that may cause animals needless suffering. Crows, magpies, and gophers should benefit from protection under our provincial cruelty law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The protections granted by the ACA are crucial because while listed species such as ravens are shielded from such cruel hunting competitions under Manitoba\u2019s Wildlife Act, crows, their close relatives, are deprived of these safeguards. In response to calls for action regarding April\u2019s killing contest,\u00a0the Manitoba Wildlife Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/13EpTYOTMrfQoVSg2fz3XlThyXtypl-B5\/view?usp=sharing\">said<\/a>\u00a0the government \u201cdoes not support or condone killing contests or other organized events in which animals are hunted purely for sport or prizes\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>but declined to take action because the contest did not violate existing legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShooting birds and gophers for points and cash prizes is not a \u2018generally accepted\u2019 hunting practice.\u00a0 It\u2019s great that the province doesn\u2019t condone these cruel contests, but words aren\u2019t enough\u2014it\u2019s time to close this nonsensical loophole. There\u2019s no place in Manitoba for contests encouraging people to gun down highly-intelligent birds and sentient, social animals for fun and prizes,\u201d Ms. Mitchell said.<\/p>\n<p>Animal Justice is calling on the CVO to investigate the planned crow and magpie killing contest in Minnedosa, which will also award \u201cpoints\u201d for killing gophers, and intervene to prevent it from going ahead, as it appears to violate the ACA.
