It&#8217;s impossible to<br \/>\nsee this bizarrity without thinking of slave armies, giants or maybe architecture-loving<br \/>\ndinosaurs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Of course we refuse to believe that actual giants put this<br \/>\ntogether. We tend to blame science.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So let&#8217;s say for a minute you&#8217;re God. (Don&#8217;t worry, you&#8217;ll be returned.) Without<br \/>\nthose marvelous opposable thumbs, with tools like glaciers, earthquakes,<br \/>\nmillennia, etc., how would you place that capstone without knocking<br \/>\nover the uprights?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It&#8217;s too many for me. But as a sculptor I&#8217;m filled with awe!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/#\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"BOTTOM\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" loading=\"lazy\" name=\"graphics2\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEgYJJurvMGE6gg6dBB1h8vmUaOumBjdvk9gVxMcv66pJb27ta7dFB5NcpaGk6MS8EXZuSjL5-z3ZteyCz7TONLSReb4P_E64wUKhYzn3JC8lepPNLAScP_VU8Bk5xzpPQ5MWoumw23ViTCb\/s320\/P65e+Dolmen.jpeg\" width=\"240\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>Another, <i>Tower Dolmen<\/i> has two capstones balanced on each other, all on the peak of a hill. <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The &#8220;pinned&#8221; rock above\u2013a few tons of unbalanced<br \/>\nstone\u2013would have to be carefully placed at the same time as the<br \/>\nupper one, right? Or do I misunderstand time as well? <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So, suppose there were two glaciers, one to deposit and hold steady the uprights<br \/>\nand another to perfectly position the lintels in balance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Given that,<br \/>\nthe two glaciers would then have to melt away\u00a0<i>without moving<\/i> in order to keep<br \/>\nthe arrangement stable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Again, how would God do that without suspending gravity<br \/>\nfor an afternoon?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/#\" style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"BOTTOM\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" loading=\"lazy\" name=\"graphics3\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEizPt44JI4SxLde_ttKEPnv4eIScsu8RG-xhIpc2j6lYsVOjl6vyA9WAIUpu7U4NWDnVB6dFZeMpLs4ltW9jvtCqXW6UaeFoupfCMP53pj-RwFMlBacnqbJr2HWzKa6fMPfTB81dqOpIz7p\/s320\/P65k+Dolmen.jpeg\" width=\"240\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A few yards away is an astonishing dolmen called Evergreen (which,<br \/>\nalthough I can&#8217;t verify it, is said to be the tallest in the world at<br \/>\n85 feet!)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The thing that so stuns me about this is that the right upright is<br \/>\nmade up of three massive stones, two of them log-shaped.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">They&#8217;re<br \/>\nnot perfectly round, but it boggles my brain to think how this<br \/>\narrangement was made or that our frequent earthquakes haven&#8217;t knocked it over like any self-respecting kid with blocks!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">OK, I give up. But it turns out that\u2013\u2013are you sitting down?\u2013\u2013 <i>it doesn&#8217;t touch! <\/i>There&#8217;s actually a tiny gap of about 1\/2<br \/>\nmillimeter! So how did that space happen<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Again if I were the sculptor, leaving that vanishing gap would be<br \/>\nimpossibly hard without massive precision tools. I&#8217;m filled with<br \/>\nwonder! I don&#8217;t for the life of me see how nature did that. I also<br \/>\nhave a hard time believing high-tech extraterrestrials did this without the next earthquake toppling them. In<br \/>\nfact all the possible stories are far-fetched. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I think the true tale is the one that fills the viewer with the<br \/>\nmost awe.
