CEO Tom Wilson said he does not expect auto insurers to get more aggressive on pricing as the industry\u2019s increases seem to have leveled off.<\/p>\n<p>For the most part, Wilson explained to analysts during a call to discuss first quarter earnings, insurers seem to be where they need to be from a profitability standpoint in the auto line, but he doesn\u2019t see insurers losing any discipline because each are looking to maintain profitable growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t see us headed into sometimes what you see in the commercial market\u2014soft markets where people are chasing volume by lowering rates.\u201d Wilson said. \u201cI don\u2019t see us moving into an aggressive rate reduction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilson said there has been a slowdown of rate increases in auto insurance compared to 2022 and 2023, although \u201cone of the large competitors is still a bit lagging, taking large price increases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a time not so long ago that Allstate released monthly reports of its auto rate increases\u2014more than 40% over the last several year\u2014as it tried to restore profitability to the line, struggling to keep pace with claims costs. In fact, the auto insurance industry as a whole struggled to keep up with loss-cost severity, to the point that financial strength rating agency AM Best tagged the U.S. personal auto segment with a negative outlook. Late in 2024, AM Best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/national\/2024\/11\/25\/802426.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shifted its outlook to stable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Allstate declared it had reached profitability targets in auto. Allstate\u2019s auto segment turned in an underwriting profit of $1.8 billion for full year 2024, reversing a loss of $1.1 billion the prior year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/national\/2025\/02\/07\/811237.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Allstate to \u2018Lean Into\u2019 Turnaround in Auto Business, and Grow<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Northbrook, Illinois-based Allstate in the first three months of 2025 continued its momentum in auto by recording a 132.5% increase in underwriting income to $816 million, while the combined ratio improved 4.7 points to 91.3.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/national\/2025\/05\/01\/822079.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Allstate Q1 Income Drops 52% on Record $3.3B Gross Catastrophe Losses<\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the May 1 call, Allstate\u2019s Mario Rizzo said the auto insurance market has seen a moderation in physical damage severity as well as favorable frequency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that\u2019s improved margins broadly, and I think the competition has leaned into growth more heavily certainly as margins have improved,\u201d said the president of property-liability. \u201cBut, I would still characterize it as a rational market from a pricing perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilson said new business is growing but retention \u201clags much as the way it lagged on price going up,\u201d because of various timing issues related to the price increases Allstate need to install.<\/p>\n<p>Retention has stabilized, and some of that is due to less rate activity but, regardless, Allstate is \u201cnot waiting for [less rate increases] to improve retention,\u201d Rizzo said.
