It should have been a case of second time lucky when I made
\na return visit to the Wealden<\/b> village of Marden <\/b>last Friday. <\/b>This followed on
\nfrom my Easter Monday<\/b> trip, which was less than a fortnight previously, and was
\nwhen I discovered that both pubs in the village were closed. Shut on a Bank
\nHoliday,<\/b> don\u2019t these publicans want to earn a living? I\u2019m assuming they did
\nsuch a roaring trade over the previous three days, that it wasn\u2019t worth their while
\nopening on the fourth day of the long Easter<\/b> break. Perhaps they did, but somehow,
\nI suspect they didn\u2019t, and whilst they might well have their own private
\nreasons for not opening their doors that day, a spot of advanced notice on their
\nwebsites, social media, or both might have others from the same wasted journey
\nthat I had.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Fortune favours the brave, as they say, so somewhat foolhardily
\nI decided to give the West End Tavern<\/b> and the Unicorn<\/b>, another chance. The pubs
\nare situated at opposite ends of the village, with less than 10 minutes walking
\ndistance between them, so determined not to be deterred, last Friday<\/b> afternoon I
\nonce again took the train over to Marden.<\/b> Unless there was a logical
\nexplanation for the previous occurrence, it seemed unlikely that both pubs in a
\nthriving and prosperous village would be closed once more.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

At Mrs. PBT’s<\/b> suggestion (she is always right, you know), I
\ncontacted one of the pubs, the Unicorn<\/b>, to confirm that it was open. Yes, it
\nwas, and it was open all day, although there would be a break during the
\nafternoon when the kitchen would be closed. Perhaps I should have phoned the
\nother pub as well, but I decided against this. As before, I set off and walked
\ndown to Tonbridge<\/b> station, where there was the same half-hourly service
\nrunning. The weather was warmer than on my previous visit, in fact it was hot
\nenough for me to wear my shorts for the first time this year.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I knew that the West End Tavern<\/b> would not be open until 2pm<\/b>,
\nso I headed towards the Unicorn<\/a><\/u><\/b> instead. The front door was wide open, reflecting
\nnot just the warm weather we were experiencing, but also as a welcome draw for customers.
\nHarvey\u2019s Best<\/b> and Fuller\u2019s London Pride<\/b> were the cask beers on sale, and by way
\nof a change, I went for the latter. Full-bodied, tasty and almost \u201cchewy\u201d<\/i><\/b>, as
\none well known beer blogger would say. The same individual would also agree that the Pride<\/b> was certainly drinking well that
\nafternoon. Incidentally, that \u201cdrinking well\u201d <\/i><\/b>remark, has become a popular clich\u00e9
\namongst quite a number of beer bloggers, and writers, although heaven knows
\nwhy?<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

More to the point, it was quite a while since I last had a
\npint of Fuller\u2019s<\/b> legendary, flagship beer, and as we don\u2019t see that often, in
\nthis part of the country, despite our relative proximity to the capital, it would
\nhave been rude to have not tried a pint. The pub wasn\u2019t exactly packed for
\nearly afternoon, but there were people sitting out in the garden at the rear of
\nthe pub, and there was a nice atmosphere about the place. I might have stayed
\nand grabbed a \u201clite bite\u201d <\/i><\/b>to keep me going (Cooking Lager,<\/b> please take note),
\nbut I was keen to try out Marden\u2019s <\/b>other pub, the West End Tavern.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I drank up, and headed of towards the latter establishment,
\nfeeling fairly confident that this time, it would be open. However, despite arriving
\nsometime after the stated 2pm<\/b> opening, I once again found both doors firmly
\nlocked, and no lights on inside either. I peered through one of the windows,
\nand it looked pleasant enough inside. I didn\u2019t notice any hand pumps, but they might have been tucked away somewhere. The food offering looked good, and reasonably priced – as evidenced by the chalkboard attached to the fence (see photo above).\u00a0 But after finding the pub doors firmly locked, for the second time in a row, I never got the chance to sample the food, or the beer. What on earth goes on with the management of these places?<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/i><\/div>\n

What to do next, then? Return
\nto the Unicorn,<\/b> leave the train at Paddock Wood <\/b>and try out the pubs there, or
\nreturn to Tonbridge?<\/b> I chose the latter, as I wanted to call in at the Nationwide,<\/b>
\nand also get a bite to eat. \u00a0<\/span>So, building
\nsociety first, and Greggs<\/b> second, where I procured a roast chicken baguette,
\ndressed up with a dash of mayonnaise and a few sprigs of water cress. Another
\nbeer was next on the agenda, but having already missed the turning for the Nelson,<\/b>
\nI headed towards Fuggle\u2019s<\/b> but then stopped in my tracks when I noticed Ye Olde Chequers<\/a><\/u>,<\/b>
\nstraight ahead. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/i><\/div>\n

This imposing, half-timbered building
\nis of the oldest constructions in the town, and also one of the oldest pubs. After the
\ncastle, <\/span>the Chequers <\/b>is probably the most photographed building in Tonbridge,<\/b> and has been described as “one of the finest examples of a Kentish
\ntimber-framed building that can be found today”<\/b>. <\/b>It stands on the High
\nStreet <\/b>on a site just below the castle where an inn possibly stood in 1264<\/b>. The
\npresent building dates back over 500 years <\/b>to the late 15th <\/sup>Century.<\/b>
\nThe room on the first floor is said to have been used as a Justices’ room and
\nat times a hangman’s noose dangled from a strong oak sign post that jutted out
\nover the street.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/i><\/div>\n

Despite its impressive pedigree,
\nthe Chequers<\/b> has never really lived up to its full potential, as far as I am
\nconcerned. \u00a0<\/span>When I first came to
\nTonbridge,<\/b> initially to work and then later on, to live, the Chequers<\/b> was a two
\nbar, Courage<\/b> house, and over the years it never progressed much beyond this,
\napart from losing its two-bar status. These criticisms aside, it was a popular pub
\nunder the watchful eye of legendary, old-school licensees, Dave<\/b> and Maureen,<\/b>
\nand this was especially true of the lunchtime trade. I remember the large, heated
\nglass cabinet that was the first thing customers saw upon entering the pub. I found
\nthis rather off-putting, and I was never sure quite how long the food remained
\non display. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/i><\/div>\n

This was back in the day when
\nworkers, dined out at lunchtime, a practice that seems largely to have died out.
\nAlso gone, are the three or four-pint sessions at lunchtime, which is probably
\njust as well in terms of efficiency and safety in the workplace. Today the
\nChequers <\/b>is operated by Pendry\u2019s Pubs Ltd,<\/b> a company that is based in Ongar,
\nEssex.<\/b> I knew that as well as Harvey\u2019s<\/b>, <\/b>I could get a pint of St Austell Tribute<\/b>
\nat the Chequers<\/b>, so by way of a change I stopped off there, rather than
\ncontinuing on to Fuggle\u2019s. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

In view of the warm weather,
\nI took my pint out to the terrace area at the rear of the pub, where a few
\nother drinkers were soaking up the sunshine. I joined them and enjoyed a pleasant and well-conditioned
\npint of Tribute<\/b>, a beer that always seems overshadowed by its stronger stablemate,
\nProper Job.<\/b> After that, it was the good old 219 bus<\/b> home, after an interesting
\nday, despite it not quite turning out as expected. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
