Answer honestly, and congratulations! You\u2019ve just self-diagnosed with \u201cmild to moderate depression.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You mean what we used to call sad?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Your doctor spends approximately 90 seconds validating this with probing questions like \u201cAnd how long have you felt this way?\u201d before reaching for the prescription pad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI think Lexapro would really help take the edge off,\u201d they say with practiced compassion, already halfway through writing the prescription. \u201cIt will balance your brain chemicals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But it\u2019s when you express hesitation that the real sales pitch begins\u2014fear. This is where doctors transform into pharmaceutical fear merchants:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou know, untreated depression can be very serious,\u201d they warn ominously. \u201cIt can worsen over time. It can affect your relationships, your work, your entire life. Depression is a serious medical condition\u2014in fact, it\u2019s the leading cause of disability worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The implication hangs in the air like a guillotine blade: refuse this medication, and you\u2019re gambling with your life. They may even pull out the suicide card: \u201cDepression can lead to suicidal thoughts if left untreated.\u201d The cosmic irony of using suicide as a scare tactic to prescribe drugs with black box warnings about increasing suicidal ideation seems lost on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For teenagers, the fear tactics are directed at parents. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to take chances with your child\u2019s mental health, do you?\u201d they ask, making parents feel like monsters for questioning whether their teen\u2019s temporary sadness requires a medication that doubles their risk of suicidal events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This isn\u2019t medical counseling. It\u2019s emotional manipulation through fear\u2014the same tactic used by predatory salespeople in every industry. \u201cBetter safe than sorry\u201d becomes the catch-all dismissal of legitimate concerns about medications with profound risks and modest benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The framing is already perfect\u2014you\u2019re \u201cbehind\u201d on something, implying non-compliance with an expected standard. Your medical record has been flagged for a deficiency that needs correcting, like a car overdue for an oil change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Express hesitation, and witness the same script unfold: \u201cThese vaccines are very safe and effective. Side effects are usually just a sore arm or mild fatigue for a day.\u201d (Myocarditis? Menstrual disruptions? Neurological issues, complete hijacking of my immune system? Those are so rare they\u2019re not worth mentioning, apparently.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ask about actual risk reduction\u2014like how the flu vaccine isn\u2019t efficacious and doesn\u2019t prevent you from contracting the flu\u2014and watch them shift uncomfortably.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why would I even risk Guillain\u2013Barr\u00e9 syndrome for this Doc? I am healthy and not that scared of the flu? Regardless of the low risk of complications\u2026 why even take that risk?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dare to question whether a perfectly healthy 17-year-old who already recovered from Covid needs an experimental mRNA intervention that doesn\u2019t prevent transmission\u2014and has now been shown to actually INCREASE susceptibility to infection over time, not to mention the myocarditis risks, menstrual disruptions, and other \u201crare\u201d side effects conveniently minimized in the sales pitch\u2014and watch their face transform before your eyes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First comes the reflexive smile-cramp, that frozen rictus of medical authority being questioned. Then the slightly widened eyes as they process your heretical departure from the script. Finally, that subtle hardening around the jaw as they shift from healthcare provider to pharmaceutical enforcement officer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s like watching someone toggle between \u201cfriendly neighborhood doctor\u201d and \u201cCovid compliance commissar\u201d in real-time, all because you had the audacity to weigh risks against benefits for your own child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
But regardless of whether they\u2019re pushing pills or jabs, we see the identical sales pitch every time\u2014a masterclass in pharmaceutical propaganda. They dramatically exaggerate even the most microscopic potential benefits while feverishly minimizing, dismissing, or flat-out denying any risks with the practiced ease of a seasoned con artist. Watch them transform a 1% absolute risk reduction into \u201890% effective!\u2019 while simultaneously downgrading \u2018known serious adverse events\u2019 to \u2018extremely rare side effects that aren\u2019t worth discussing.\u2019 It\u2019s as if they\u2019ve never read a single page of the actual scientific literature on the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Spoiler alert: they haven\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most haven\u2019t ventured beyond industry-funded continuing education modules and pharmaceutical company press releases since medical school. The journal articles gathering dust in their mental libraries are pharmaceutical marketing materials disguised as science, cherry-picked data points that support the sales pitch while burying inconvenient truths beneath statistical sleight-of-hand.
