Although VE Day falls on May 8, this year the UK is observing the occasion on May 5 as part of the bank holiday weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft involved, a Supermarine Spitfire registered as G-BMSB, crashed near Lower Wall Road in West Hythe on May 3, 2025, at 19:23 local time due to engine failure, as reported by the Aviation Safety Network. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-1\"\/>\n<p>The aircraft, owned by a training company, Warbird Experiences, was operated by UK-based \u2018Fly a Spitfire\u2019 company.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses captured video footage of the aircraft suddenly changing direction and crash-landing in a field.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Breaking?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Breaking<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Ongoing?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Ongoing<\/a> A Supermarine Spitfire trainer crash-landed in Kend (England). Both 2 aboard survived. Reportedly cause was an engine failure. The Kent Fire and Rescue Service informed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2025\/05\/04\/spitfire-crash-lands-power-loss-kent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Telegraph<\/a> that both escaped the aircraft, and paramedics attended to one of them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-2\"\/>\n<p>\u201cWe were called to Lower Wall Road, West Hythe, to an aircraft that had made an emergency landing,\u201d Kent Fire and Rescue Service said. \u201cTwo fire engines attended, and crews helped to make the scene safe.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On May 4, 2025, Fly a Spitfire issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FlyASpitfire\/posts\/incident-statementwe-are-aware-of-an-incident-involving-one-of-our-spitfire-airc\/1076442214514709\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement on Facebook<\/a> confirming that they are \u201caware of an incident involving one of Spitfire aircraft in the vicinity of Hythe\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have spoken to the pilot who has advised that a precautionary landing was made at a non-airfield site,\u201d Fly a Spitfire statement read.\u00a0\u201cThe pilot and passenger are uninjured.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-3\"\/>\n<p>The cause of the aircraft\u2019s power loss is still unknown, and the Air Accident Investigation Branch has started an investigation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A historic Supermarine Spitfire from World War II made an emergency landing in a field near Kent, United Kingdom, after losing power.\u00a0\u00a0 This incident occurred just ahead of the 80th anniversary celebrations of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), which marks the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 1945.
