\nWhen I started my journey to FIRE (financially independent, retired early) in late 2007 there wasn\u2019t much on the topic in the public domain.\u00a0 To my knowledge at that time the term FIRE hadn\u2019t even been coined and the US based Jacob at Early Retirement Extreme<\/a> was just getting going with his blog.<\/p>\n

When I started this blog in late 2009, which was predominantly aimed at holding me accountable, learning from others and sharing my journey to early retirement in the small hope it might help some others, even\u00a0Mr Money Mustache<\/a>\u00a0hadn\u2019t yet arrived on the scene.\u00a0 To my knowledge that didn\u2019t occur until 2011.<\/p>\n

Even at that point the UK FIRE blogger scene was still pretty quiet.\u00a0 Of course the great Monevator<\/a>\u00a0was running full steam ahead but at that time my feeling was that his site was more investing focused for which I must once again tip my hat and say a massive thanks for everything he has taught me.\u00a0 To my knowledge the UK FIRE blogs didn\u2019t really start to ramp until around 2013 after which blogs like The FIRE Starter<\/a>\u00a0and Quietly Saving<\/a>\u00a0appeared who each continue to put their own unique and interesting spin on things.\u00a0 This has continued to the present day with new unique blogs like Young FI Guy<\/a>, Ms Ziyou<\/a>, Gentleman\u2019s Family Finances<\/a>\u00a0and Fire v London<\/a>\u00a0all sharing something new regularly.<\/p>\n

In more recent times UK FIRE has even started to go a little more mainstream.\u00a0 It seemed to start with that diabolical Channel 4 programme in mid-2017 and in more recent times we\u2019ve seen multiple newspapers run articles.\u00a0 Even though I question some of the content I think this is fantastic as it gets the message out there which is something I\u2019ve struggled to do.<\/p>\n

In parallel to FIRE becoming more mainstream a different opportunity is however starting to emerge \u2013 monetisation.\u00a0 When it\u2019s overt and spread amongst plenty of good content I have no issue with it.\u00a0 Hell, even I do and have done a bit of it to pay for hosting fees and the odd cup of coffee.\u00a0 Try wading through a US FIRE blog without seeing the words Personal Capital someday…<\/p>\n

Where in my opinion (and it\u2019s just my opinion) FIRE is changing for the worse is where the monetisation is much more subtle and maybe even not recognisable.\u00a0 I saw this demonstrated recently where a FIRE blog that I read occasionally wrote a pithy statement about a few FIRE themes without much context which I thought was a little flippant.\u00a0 I therefore left a respectful well reasoned comment about why I thought that was the case.\u00a0 Rather than the comment being allowed to stand or a reply being given my, in my opinion, well reasoned comment was moderated.\u00a0 Poking around the site a little more clearly my comment wasn\u2019t on brand or on message.<\/p>\n

As FIRE continues to grow in popularity I expect we\u2019ll see more of this.\u00a0 I will no longer read that blog nor will I read any new blogs where I spot that occurring.\u00a0 It\u2019s a shame really as the long standing FIRE community is a great place to learn and share.<\/p>\n
