{"id":223811,"date":"2025-05-05T00:29:22","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T00:29:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/hard-right-candidate-wins-first-round-of-romanias-election-rerun\/"},"modified":"2025-05-05T00:29:22","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T00:29:22","slug":"hard-right-candidate-wins-first-round-of-romanias-election-rerun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=223811","title":{"rendered":"Hard-right candidate wins first round of Romania\u2019s election rerun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=01a6915c-6edd-4a14-a235-e4299c99a9c7\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Hard-right leader George Simion was the clear winner of the first round of Romania\u2019s presidential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1054440b-d61c-40a5-8004-d7e87e7b0980\" data-trackable=\"link\">election<\/a> vote, and will face a pro-EU centrist in the run-off on May 18.<\/p>\n<p>With nearly 99 per cent\u00a0of domestic votes and more than 80 per cent of diaspora votes counted late on Sunday, Simion was a runaway winner with 40.3 per cent of the vote, according to Romania\u2019s Central Election Bureau. <\/p>\n<p>Bucharest\u2019s centrist independent mayor Nicu\u0219or Dan came second with 20.9 per cent, and Crin Antonescu, another centrist who was the joint candidate of the three parties in the governing coalition, finished third with 20.4\u00a0per cent of the domestic vote. Dan also led Antonescu by a comfortable margin in the diaspora vote, which is counted separately. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1054440b-d61c-40a5-8004-d7e87e7b0980\" data-trackable=\"link\">vote was rerun<\/a> after the first-round victory of ultranationalist politician C\u0103lin Georgescu was annulled by the constitutional court over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/071c9233-5ede-46bc-99e5-a89b59080b6b\" data-trackable=\"link\">allegations of Russian interference<\/a>. Georgescu, an ally of Simion, was subsequently barred from standing in the new ballot. <\/p>\n<p>The cancellation of November\u2019s result was sharply criticised by US President Donald Trump\u2019s administration, with vice-president JD Vance saying it was an example of Europe\u2019s liberal elite failing to uphold democratic freedoms.<\/p>\n<p>Simion said in a post on Facebook: \u201cRomanians are the winners. Thank you!\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Antonescu said: \u201cIt is an irreversible result\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009I leave this ordeal with my head held high. The people\u2019s vote must be respected.\u201d He did not endorse either of the remaining two candidates.<\/p>\n<p>A final tally is expected to be announced on Monday morning. Nearly 1mn Romanians outside the country voted, most for Dan or Simion. There were 11 candidates in total.<\/p>\n<p>Costin Ciobanu, a researcher at Denmark\u2019s Aarhus university, said the first-round result reflected a \u201csecond electoral shock for the ruling coalition [after Georgescu\u2019s win in November\u2019s annulled vote]. It\u2019s a repudiation of the mainstream alliance in Romania\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>With Simion as president, Romania\u2019s relative political stability of the past several years could be jeopardised. This is the way we can think of having him as\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009prime minister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the second round, Dan is expected to try to form an alliance of all mainstream forces to defeat Simion, but may struggle to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not too worried about such an alliance,\u201d Simion said. \u201cThis is only a smoke bomb, a diversion [from the fact] that I\u2019m not the extremist, the hooligan, the isolationist they are portraying me to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the second round Simion could pick up voters from supporters of former premier Victor Ponta, a leftwing politician turned Trump fan, who won 13.3 per cent on Sunday of the vote according to the nearly complete results. <\/p>\n<p>Georgescu, who had polled well over 40 per cent before he was barred from running again in March, and Simion cast their ballots together in a Bucharest suburb, where some supporters chanted pro-Georgescu slogans.<\/p>\n<p>The annulment thrust Romania into a political crisis at a sensitive moment. Its credit rating outlook has been cut to negative by Moody\u2019s. And it is in dire need of reforms as it struggles to tackle the EU\u2019s highest budget deficit.<\/p>\n<p>A key contributor to Nato efforts to contain Russian manoeuvres in the Black Sea region, Romania is an important route for exports from Ukraine and has also offered military aid for its neighbour.<\/p>\n<p>As voting proceeded on Sunday, a Russian hacker group claimed to have shut down the websites of several ministries and Antonescu\u2019s campaign page.
