{"id":222004,"date":"2025-05-04T02:47:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-04T02:47:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/singapores-ruling-party-sweeps-to-victory-as-voters-opt-for-stability\/"},"modified":"2025-05-04T02:47:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-04T02:47:10","slug":"singapores-ruling-party-sweeps-to-victory-as-voters-opt-for-stability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=222004","title":{"rendered":"Singapore\u2019s ruling party sweeps to victory as voters opt for stability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=0d3e7996-4a57-4a32-b048-d3241a2e56d8\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Singapore\u2019s People\u2019s Action party has won its 16th consecutive election, increasing its share of the popular vote as voters in the trade-dependent country backed stability in the face of rising geopolitical tensions.<\/p>\n<p>The PAP \u2014 whose winning streak dates back to 1959 when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/singapore\" data-trackable=\"link\">Singapore<\/a> was a British colony \u2014 secured 87 out of 97 seats, including five uncontested seats, according to results announced in the early hours of Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p>In its first electoral contest under Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d52a552e-8272-4ae4-9e44-cf8d1cd05191\" data-trackable=\"link\">elevated to the role a year ago<\/a>, the party received 66 per cent of the popular vote, higher than 61 per cent in the last election in 2020 and its highest margin of victory in a decade. <\/p>\n<p>More than 92 per cent of the 2.6mn registered electors voted in Saturday\u2019s poll, according to the city-state\u2019s elections department, down from 96 per cent five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s election came amid an escalating global trade war sparked by US President Donald Trump\u2019s trade war, and echoed recent polls in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/5f9a2aa2-00c8-437c-bfc7-43d1f5416b45\" data-trackable=\"link\">Canada<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0bd1f759-1193-4d61-a636-2f669a81f83b\" data-trackable=\"link\">Australia<\/a>, where the incumbent performed well in the face of mounting geopolitical uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore\u2019s global trade is greater than three times its GDP, and the financial and commercial hub \u2014 which plays a crucial role in the exchange of goods and services between China and the west \u2014 is seen as especially vulnerable to a downturn in global trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results will put Singapore in a better position to face this turbulent world,\u201d said Wong during a speech at 3am. He called the election result a \u201cclear signal of trust, stability and confidence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The election was viewed as a crucial test for 52-year-old Wong and the PAP as it looks to a future beyond the country\u2019s founding Lee dynasty, which has dominated Singaporean politics for the past seven decades and oversaw the city-state\u2019s transformation from a developing nation into one of the richest in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Wong took over from Lee Hsien Loong, the son of the country\u2019s modern founder, Lee Kuan Yew. It will receive an additional two so-called non-constituency seats due to how close it ran to the PAP in some constituencies.<\/p>\n<p>Pritam Singh, leader of the Workers\u2019 party, acknowledged it had been a tough campaign.
