Core supply and demand fundamentals are now improving.\n    <\/li>\n<li>\n      Global commodity prices have started to break out of a multi-year range. Drivers include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n            the demand recovery as the pandemic moderates\n          <\/li>\n<li>\n            supply disruptions due to shortages, and\n          <\/li>\n<li>\n            fiscal stimulus injected by governments worldwide. A rising tide lifts all boats.\n          <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Legendary commodity investor<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_Rogers\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Rogers<\/a><br \/>\n      has often said that major commodity cycles tend to be<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimrogers.com\/breakfast-of-champions\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about every 20 years<\/a>.<br \/>\n      He predicted the last great commodities bull market that started in 1999&#8230; 1999 + 20 = 2019.<br \/>\n      <i>Is it time to get long-term bullish?<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\n    A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats<br \/>\n  <\/h2>\n<p>\n    Commodity cycles follow the old adage \u201chistory rhymes, but it does not repeat\u201d. We always have had commodity<br \/>\n    cycles, and we always will. The driving factors for each cycle tend to differ.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    The last corn bull market was driven in part by the<br \/>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Renewable_Fuel_Standard_(United_States)\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Renewable Fuel Standard<\/a><br \/>\n    (\u201cRFS\u201d, also known as the ethanol<br \/>\n    mandate) and a growing middle-class in China. Common cycle drivers in the past have included weather<br \/>\n    fluctuations, wars, embargoes, tariffs, inflation, etc.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    The current cycle\u2019s drivers include:\n  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n      New fiscal stimulus and meaningful increase in money supply\n    <\/li>\n<li>\n      Labor and farmhand shortages due to travel restrictions\n    <\/li>\n<li>\n      Growing middle class India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Sub-Sahara Africa and other new-era emerging markets\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n    Last week the United Nations&#8217; Food &amp; Agriculture Organization (FAO) released its March 2021 report.<br \/>\n    The FAO tracks a global basket of food staples including sugar, dairy, vegetable oils, cereals and meat<br \/>\n    \u2014 this index rose 2.4% in February, reaching its highest level since July 2014 (ninth consecutive monthly increase).\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    The FAO\u2019s food index was stuck in a range of plus or minus 10% since 2015, and it began to break out<br \/>\n    of the range starting in 4Q 2020. It is now ~20% higher than the trailing five-year range, with the<br \/>\n    bulk of the increase occurring over the last nine months. The report had a common theme for most of the<br \/>\n    categories: <i>shrinking supply and growing global demand<\/i>.\n  <\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width:800px\">\n<div><picture><source data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.equipmentradar.com\/assets\/media\/blog\/posts\/R323475\/20210310-fao-food-price.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><source data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.equipmentradar.com\/assets\/media\/blog\/posts\/R323475\/20210310-fao-food-price.png\" type=\"image\/png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.equipmentradar.com\/assets\/media\/blog\/posts\/R323475\/20210310-fao-food-price.png\" alt=\"FAO Food Prie Index\" class=\"blogpost-media my-4 lazy\"\/><\/source><\/source><\/picture><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\n        Source:<br \/>\n        <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/worldfoodsituation\/foodpricesindex\/en\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN FAO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n        Takeaway: The FAO food price index was stuck in a range for five years, and recently it started to break out (red and yellow lines lines).\n      <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n    There is a modest correlation and common trend among agriculture commodities long-term, as well as broader<br \/>\n    industrial metals and energy. During the initial onset of the pandemic commodities took a hit as markets re-calibrated<br \/>\n    for lower growth expectations.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    We saw oil prices go negative for the first time ever, and a flight to safety<br \/>\n    and bonds. Commodities bottomed and began their strong recovery when governments around the world announced<br \/>\n    their large fiscal stimulus plans.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    The fiscal stimulus is impacting prices and demand. The transmission of this stimulus is different than prior economic recovery<br \/>\n    measures that followed the Financial Crisis &#8211; this stimulus is cash given directly to people and businesses to spend immediately.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Money supply (as measured by the<br \/>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/MABMM301USM189S\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve\u2019s M3<\/a>)<br \/>\n    is 24% higher than it was prior to the stimulus. Congress is<br \/>\n    about to pass legislation to<br \/>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/us-policy\/2021\/02\/26\/american-rescue-plan-house-coronavirus-stimulus\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">distribute another $1.9 trillion<\/a>,<br \/>\n    which is an additional 10% growth to the money supply.\n  <\/p>\n<div class=\"addthis-share-img-tro\"><picture><source data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.equipmentradar.com\/assets\/media\/blog\/posts\/R323475\/20210310-wasde-prices-surged.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><source data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.equipmentradar.com\/assets\/media\/blog\/posts\/R323475\/20210310-wasde-prices-surged.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.equipmentradar.com\/assets\/media\/blog\/posts\/R323475\/20210310-wasde-prices-surged.jpg\" alt=\"Asset Prices Have Surged After Fiscal Stimulus\" class=\"blogpost-media my-4 lazy\"\/><\/source><\/source><\/picture><\/div>\n<p>\n    These are some big moves by historical standards. Reported consumer price inflation is +1%? Hmm&#8230; that\u2019s a head-scratcher.\n  <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/kPtv3UIPrv36cjxqLs\" style=\"width:300px\" frameborder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/nba-celebrity-kPtv3UIPrv36cjxqLs\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n    We should start to see these large price moves work their way into consumer and producer prices over coming months.<br \/>\n    Price increases often have a 6-12 month lag given a variety of factors, including:\n  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n      many existing contractual agreements adjust pricing quarterly or annually and need time to adjust\n    <\/li>\n<li>\n      transit times\n    <\/li>\n<li>\n      &#8220;wait and see&#8221; approach by sellers to confirm the higher costs are sticky\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"h2\">\n    Core Corn Fundamentals Are Improving<br \/>\n  <\/h2>\n<div class=\"addthis-share-img-tro\"><picture><source data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.equipmentradar.com\/assets\/media\/blog\/posts\/R323475\/20210310-wasde-improving-corn-fundamentals.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><source data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.equipmentradar.com\/assets\/media\/blog\/posts\/R323475\/20210310-wasde-improving-corn-fundamentals.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.equipmentradar.com\/assets\/media\/blog\/posts\/R323475\/20210310-wasde-improving-corn-fundamentals.jpg\" alt=\"WASDE Corn Fundamentals Are Improving\" class=\"blogpost-media my-4 lazy\"\/><\/source><\/source><\/picture><\/div>\n<p>\n    The USDA\u2019s 2020\/21 corn forecast (World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates, \u201cWASDE\u201d) has<br \/>\n    gradually changed its tune since the initial forecast in July 2020. It now paints a picture of<br \/>\n    a more constrained supply and demand environment than originally anticipated.<br \/>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/oce\/commodity\/wasde\/wasde0321.pdf\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">March 2021 WASDE report link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n    WASDE lowered its ending stocks projection by 43% to 1.5bn bu from 2.6bn bu, and ending stocks-to-use<br \/>\n    ratio from 18% to 10%. Most of the revision is due to increased exports (0.5bn bu) and decreased<br \/>\n    production (0.8bn bu) &#8211; offset by lower domestic feed consumption (0.2bn bu).\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Prices tend to become more volatile and susceptible to sharp moves to the upside when the<br \/>\n    stocks-to-use ratio is in the single-digit range. WASDE projects 2020\/21 yield of 172 bu\/acre (about 2% lower than trend<br \/>\n        yield at 176 bu\/acre). The chart above shows the percentage<br \/>\n        variance of reported yield relative to the expected trend yield. About a third of time reported yield is<br \/>\n        at least 5% better than trend yield, and about a quarter of the time reported yield is at least 5% worse<br \/>\n        than trend yield. For reference, the recent 2012 drought caused the reported yield to be 22% worse than the trend yield.\n      <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n    There is a one-in-four chance that we will see the stocks-to-use ratio drop to single digits, a level that typically<br \/>\n    coincides with sharp price moves to the upside. There is a 1-in-12 chance that reported yield is 10% worse than trend yield,<br \/>\n    which would lower the stocks-to-use ratio to about 1% (all else equal).\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    There are a couple of items that we learned from the 2012 drought:\n  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n      Lower yields may hurt farmer sentiment short term, but <i>crop insurance and higher crop prices ultimately<br \/>\n      helped farmers medium-term more than the damage done by lower yields<\/i>. Crop insurance enabled farmers to smooth<br \/>\n      out the volatility caused by weather\n    <\/li>\n<li>\n      Higher grain prices led to some demand reduction (culling of herds, etc)\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>The key point here is we could easily see $8-10 \/ bu corn over the next few years&#8230; there is not a lot of wiggle<br \/>\n    room given current trends and unpredictable variables such as weather.<\/i> Even if we get through this year with a<br \/>\n    decent yield and moderate prices, there will likely be continued pressure on global stocks in the coming years.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    We have just exited an eight-year bear market in corn that moderated risk-taking and speculative planting. On the<br \/>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4407581-deere-companys-de-management-presents-on-q1-2021-results-earnings-call-transcript\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earnings call<\/a><br \/>\n    management noted<br \/>\n    &#8220;Ag fundamentals improved significantly throughout the first quarter and the improved sentiment is reflected<br \/>\n    in the most recent status of our order books and early order programs&#8221;.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    The <a href=\"https:\/\/s22.q4cdn.com\/253594569\/files\/doc_financials\/2021\/q1\/1Q_2021_Earnings-Call-Presentation.pdf\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outlook for fiscal year 2021<\/a><br \/>\n    is very optimistic:\n  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n      Large ag equipment sales in US &amp; Canada equipment will be up between 15% and 20% <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n          Crop Care early order program that ended in October was up double digits\n        <\/li>\n<li>\n          Combine early order program ending in January was up double digits, outpacing Crop Care\n        <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Large tractor order book now extends through most of the year, so Deere is increasing production rates\n    <\/li>\n<li>\n      Small ag and turf equipment in US &amp; Canada are expected to be up 5%\n    <\/li>\n<li>\n      European ag market is forecast to grow about 5%, with a solid order book extending through most of 2021\n    <\/li>\n<li>\n      South American ag is forecast to grow about 10%. Deere noted that private financing conditions are<br \/>\n      improving in South America, providing better credit availability to farmers\n    <\/li>\n<li>\n      Ag sales in Asia are expected to be down slightly\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n    Ryan Campbell, Deere CFO, noted \u201cWe&#8217;ve seen underlying fundamentals continue to improve since the last<br \/>\n    quarter. Higher commodity prices and improved market access have boosted sentiment in ag markets and are<br \/>\n    reflected in the results of our early order programs and order books. In addition, we&#8217;ve seen further<br \/>\n    strength and demand for compact utility tractors and turf equipment, as consumers continue to focus<br \/>\n    on home and landscape projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\n    Used Tractor &amp; Combine Auction Sales Prices Are Strengthening<br \/>\n  <\/h2>\n<p>\n    \u201cThe (used equipment auction price) trend has been up recently since commodities<br \/>\n    jumped up over the last few months. Equipment prices have jumped up too. Trends are definitely<br \/>\n    stronger,\u201d said Bill Sullivan, of<br \/>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sullivanauctioneers.com\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sullivan Auctioneers<\/a><br \/>\n    in Hamilton, Illinois. \u201cI would say many prices have gone back to the 2012 peak.\u201d  Auctions across the US are reporting higher prices<br \/>\n    for used tractors, combines, sprayers and planters across the board for all major manufacturers.\n  <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h2\">\n    Conclusion<br \/>\n  <\/h2>\n<p>\n    Agriculture commodities always have been and always will be in demand&#8230; We all need to eat. Agriculture<br \/>\n    demand has weathered countless financial and political storms since civilization began. There is no telling<br \/>\n    of what will happen with increased money printing \u2014 but <i>there will always be demand for grain<\/i>.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Historically speaking agriculture and land have been safe investments that weather political and monetary volatility. In addition,<br \/>\n    the long-term cycles can be very powerful once they start.
