Terri Sewell, AL-07, condemned the Trump Administration for cutting off $15 million in grant funding awarded to Birmingham City Schools to expand school-based mental health services for students. In October 2024, Birmingham City Schools were awarded $15 million over a five-year period to hire and train mental health professionals and reduce school violence, beginning with <a href=\"https:\/\/sewell.house.gov\/press-releases?ContentRecord_id=38DE7FDC-600A-4400-959E-B4E80927F1DA\"><span class=\"s2\">$3.1 million<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in Fiscal Year 2025. The program\u2019s unexpected elimination will prohibit the school system from hiring essential mental health personnel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is a cruel betrayal of our children by the Trump Administration,\u201d\u00a0said Rep. Sewell.\u00a0\u201cThis program, which was authorized by both Democrats and Republicans in Congress, was created specifically to increase mental health resources for our nation\u2019s students and address school violence. To cut mental health services\u00a0because providers from diverse backgrounds are hired is outrageous!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur communities, and especially our schools, are in dire need of greater mental health resources. I thought we could all agree on that,\u201d\u00a0continued Sewell.\u00a0\u201cYet again, President Trump has shown that he is more interested in cutting taxes for billionaires than doing anything to help our public school students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The grant program was created by the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act which passed with Rep. Sewell\u2019s support in the wake of the deadly Uvalde school shooting. The Trump Administration\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/policy-politics\/trump-ends-1-billion-in-mental-health-grants-for-schools\/2025\/04\"><span class=\"s2\">reportedly cited<\/span><\/a>\u00a0potential violations of \u201cFederal civil rights law\u201d to explain its termination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- CONTENT END 1 -->\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Rep.
