I have a Google Analytics 4 tracking setup, and I want to migrate it to run through my server-side Google Tag Manager container.<\/p>\n<p>Before I do that, I want to duplicate the existing setup, so that I can compare the server-side and client-side streams to make sure that the data collection is pristine. I don\u2019t want to be blindsided by any data collection gaps once I make the migration to server-side tagging!<\/p>\n<p>Here are the tags that I have:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1712 \/ 1056;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/11\/ga4-tags.jpg\" title=\"Google Analytics 4 tags\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1056\" width=\"1712\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/11\/ga4-tags.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Google Analytics 4 tags\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>To duplicate the tags, go to <strong>Admin<\/strong> and then choose <strong>Export Container<\/strong> in the container options.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1262 \/ 674;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/11\/export-container.jpg\" title=\"Export container\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"674\" width=\"1262\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/11\/export-container.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Export container\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Next, choose the version or workspace that has the items you want to export.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, select \/ unselect until you\u2019ve chosen all the <strong>tags<\/strong> that you want to duplicate.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Important!<\/strong> You do <strong>not<\/strong> have to select triggers or variables. The duplicated tags will contain the original references to the triggers and variables associated with them. You\u2019ll see a warning about <strong>missing references<\/strong> but this can be ignored.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 2406 \/ 1356;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/11\/choose-tags.jpg\" title=\"Choose tags\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1356\" width=\"2406\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/11\/choose-tags.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Choose tags\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve finished selecting, click the blue <strong>Export<\/strong> button in the top corner.<\/p>\n<p>Now, to perform the actual duplication, in the <strong>Admin<\/strong> section, choose <strong>Import Container<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>First, choose the container file you just exported, and then click to choose either a <strong>new<\/strong> or an <strong>existing workspace<\/strong> to import the duplicates.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1294 \/ 414;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/11\/file-and-workspace.jpg\" title=\"Container file and workspace\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"414\" width=\"1294\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/11\/file-and-workspace.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Container file and workspace\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here comes the important step: Choose <strong>Merge<\/strong> and then <strong>Rename conflicting tags, triggers, and variables<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1786 \/ 818;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/11\/import-tags.jpg\" title=\"Import tags\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"818\" width=\"1786\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/11\/import-tags.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Import tags\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This selection means that the items in the import are added as <strong>copies<\/strong> of the originals. They\u2019ll also be renamed automatically with the suffix <code>_import_N<\/code> to make sure the duplication conflict is resolved.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve verified it looks good, click <strong>Add to workspace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You can then go to the workspace and verify that everything was imported over.<\/p>\n<p>Now you\u2019ll just need to click through the copied items and make the necessary changes. Remember that if you\u2019re doing this with Google Analytics 4, you <strong>must<\/strong> have a different Measurement ID for the duplicate tags.<\/p>\n<p>In the example below, I\u2019ve updated all the duplicate tags to collect to the measurement ID <code>G-SERVERSIDE<\/code> using the <code>server_container_url<\/code> field to redirect them to SGTM. In server-side Google Tag Manager, I\u2019ll then map <code>G-SERVERSIDE<\/code> to the correct GA4 measurement ID for the parallel tracking property.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1450 \/ 678;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/11\/update-duplicates.jpg\" title=\"Update the duplicates\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"678\" width=\"1450\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/11\/update-duplicates.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Update the duplicates\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This method of using container export\/import can be an extremely fast way to duplicate a large number of resources in the container. The amount of overhead <em>after<\/em> the duplication can be greatly reduced by using <strong>variables<\/strong> for fields that you\u2019ll need to change, for example the Measurement ID and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/settings-variables-for-ga4-in-google-tag-manager\/\">event and configuration settings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think about this tip?
