The exhibition, <i>Agnes<br \/>\nPelton: Desert Transcendentalist,<\/i> opened at the Whitney in March as<br \/>\nthe country went into lockdown, so for much of the run of the show it was dark.<br \/>\nI saw it in September just as the museum was reopening, when attendance was sparse.\u00a0Pelton was part of the Transcendentalist Painting Group in Taos, founded in<br \/>\n1938 by Emil Bisttram (1895-1976) and Raymond Jonson (1891-1982). Not<br \/>\ncoincidentally the work of the latter two was on exhibition at D. Wigmore Fine<br \/>\nArt, a gem of a gallery on 57th Street that specializes in abstraction and<br \/>\nrealism within the Modernist period.\u00a0This post looks at the work of all three artists.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: small;\"><i>Agn<\/i><b><i>es Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist<\/i> at the Whitney Museum<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><br \/>\nThe Pelton exhibition marks the second major museum show in recent years to feature the<br \/>\nwork of a relatively unknown female visionary. In the 2018-2019 season it was<br \/>\n<b><span style=\"color: #444444;\"><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guggenheim.org\/exhibition\/hilma-af-klint\" target=\"_blank\">Hilma af Klint<\/a>:\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/b><\/span><b style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"color: #444444;\"><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guggenheim.org\/exhibition\/hilma-af-klint\" style=\"font-family: arial;\" target=\"_blank\">Paintings for the Future<\/a><\/i><\/span><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guggenheim.org\/exhibition\/hilma-af-klint\" style=\"font-family: arial;\" target=\"_blank\"><b><span style=\"color: #444444;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">\u00a0at the Guggenheim. I&#8217;d say that Klint\u2019s was the more powerful, with large-scale paintings, many of them complex geometric abstractions owing their creation to her occult studies and<br \/>\nvisions. Klint makes us rethink the origins of contemporary abstraction\u2014it was<br \/>\nlikely she who soared past representation even before Kandinsky\u2014 but<br \/>\nher wish that her work not be shown until 20 years after her death meant that<br \/>\nshe would remain largely unknown for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">Pelton, on the other hand, was an exhibiting artist with<br \/>\nnumerous solo and group shows to her credit. She showed regularly in New York<br \/>\nCity and had several paintings included in the 1929 Armory Show. Through Theosophy,<br \/>\nZen Buddhism, and yoga she had been exploring paths to a higher consciousness. Seeking<br \/>\nsolitude, she relocated first to the then-unpopulated eastern end of Long<br \/>\nIsland \u00a0(where she lived in a windmill) and<br \/>\nthen to the desert near Palm Springs, California, where she could reconcile her<br \/>\npaintings with her longing for and experience of consciousness on a higher<br \/>\nplane. Born in Germany, with a career start in New York City, she nevertheless<br \/>\nfound California to be her spiritual home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">After early realist work,<br \/>\nPelton settled on forms that are largely biomorphic, often<br \/>\nswirly, with veils of color achieved through glazing. Her iconography depicts vessels,<br \/>\nbuds and flowers, stars, flames, circles, and terrestrial landscapes with a<br \/>\nsense of the otherworldly. A few of the paintings are reminiscent of Tantric<br \/>\ndrawings. The intentionally small number of<br \/>\nvisitors and relative quiet heightened the contemplative nature of the work. For<br \/>\nthe most part I didn\u2019t connect with Pelton\u2019s deeply personal iconography. To be honest, I found many of the paintings kind of hokey\u2014except<br \/>\nfor the sublime painting that opens this post, which I could look at<br \/>\nevery day for the rest of my life\u2014but her longing for unity with the divine was powerfully<br \/>\npresent in the work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">The artist died in 1961 of liver cancer at the age of 79.<br \/>\nShe left behind a large body of work which depicts that longing. With no beginning and no end, the form has often been used by artists to suggest infinity and self-contained harmony. Fittingly, given Pelton&#8217;s belief in the power of certain shapes to covey &#8216;the higher possibilities of vision,&#8217; she incorporated circles in her compositions to suggest the calm radiance at the center of a storm.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; Pelton joined them when she moved<br \/>\nWest. \u201cJoin\u201d is probably the wrong word, because while she shared an affinity<br \/>\nwith them, she remained in California, although she maintained a correspondence<br \/>\nwith the two. <br \/><!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe group selected the term \u2018transcendental\u2019\u201d to represent<br \/>\nthem because of its universal sense of shared values that eschewed such<br \/>\nconcepts as religion, politics, fashion, and commercialism in favor of<br \/>\npromoting a sense of the sublime, of connecting to the realm of the spirit.<br \/>\nWhile likeminded in their philosophies, the group was an eclectic bunch, with<br \/>\ndiffering painting styles, and not all of them lived in New Mexico the entire<br \/>\ntime, although the core group did,\u201d wrote Nancy Zimmerman in a magazine found in<br \/>\nthe <a href=\"https:\/\/addisonrowe.art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Transcendentalists_Archive.pdf \" target=\"_blank\"><b><span style=\"color: #444444;\">Transcendentalist Archive<\/span><\/b><\/a> maintained by Addison Rowe Gallery in Santa Fe,<br \/>\nwhich, like D. Wigmore, retains an inventory of the two artists\u2019 work..<\/p>\n<p>Both Bisttram and Jonson came to abstraction via realism. By the time they<br \/>\nfounded the TSG, \u201cboth had progressed to full abstraction for the purpose of<br \/>\ncarrying paintings beyond the physical world through new concepts of space,<br \/>\ncolor, light, and design,\u201d writes Deedee Wigmore in her essay for the show. The<br \/>\nexhibition of paintings by Bisttram and Jonson at Wigmore are, like Pelton\u2019s,<br \/>\nmodestly scaled. To generalize, Bisttram, who worked in encaustic with a very<br \/>\nlight hand, focused on hard-edge geometric forms, while Jonson crosshatched<br \/>\nwith a fine brush in oil to achieve a uniquely textured surface for his curvilinear<br \/>\ncompositions.
