Things changed last August, when she was invited to play at Mercado Negro \u2013 a small bar and caf\u00e9 in the centre of Ponta Delgada. In attendance was Bruno Moreira \u2013 a co-founder R\u00e1dio Vaiv\u00e9m along with Tremor\u2019s artistic director Lu\u00eds Banrezes Kitas \u2013 who invited Canto to take part in a residency programme. \u201cIt was just me and Bruno, and I showed him all of my original materials and raw melodies, and he was like: \u2018Okay, we\u2019re going to turn them into songs,\u2019\u201d she recalls. \u201cAnd we turned them into something real \u2013 these are the songs I presented today.\u201d<\/p>\n
Seeing early signs of a scene blossoming has given her the belief that there are local, offline opportunities. \u201cI think seeing these things happen in the last couple of years was what made me want to come out of my shell,\u201d she says. \u201cThere\u2019s festivals like Tremor and residencies, and my friend has a collective where people get together and make music. And seeing this artistic community start to grow \u2013 there\u2019s bars and caf\u00e9s where people are like: \u2018I\u2019ll teach you how to DJ and you teach me how to play music.\u2019 Surrounding myself with these people has made me realise that there are things around me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Changes have not gone unnoticed for Val\u00e9rio either. \u201cI can see some progress in terms of the hip-hop community,\u201d he says. \u201cPeople are going to each other\u2019s houses and doing more stuff. But we still don\u2019t have collaborative spaces. There are no youth clubs, or cultural and community spaces for artists.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s what he, and the rest of the Azorean scene, hope to build from the ground up. \u201cHopefully in the future, if not exporting musicians worldwide, I want them to create in the island \u2013 to have a space to create,\u201d he continues. \u201cWe have so many talented musicians, no matter what the genre is. Think of [legendary Cuban collective] Buena Vista Social Club<\/a>; before they did the documentary<\/a> in \u201999, people didn\u2019t know about them, and they were doing music for the sake of it.
