Achievement versus fulfillment?<\/p>\n

The tension between these two is a contemplation\u00a0my spiritual activist friend\u00a0Gibr\u00e1n\u00a0Rivera<\/a>\u00a0has been\u00a0exploring<\/a>, and it got my wheels turning:<\/p>\n

\n

The drive to grow and to achieve needs to be tempered. It is a good thing. But it comes with a trap. It can lead us to postpone fulfillment. It can lead us to believe that we will only be fulfilled when we achieve the goals we are seeking. This is a dangerous mind trick.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This resonated with me.\u00a0In an earlier post, I questioned\u00a0where our confidence comes from.<\/a>\u00a0Certainly,\u00a0some of it must be based in real things we have\u00a0achieved<\/b>.<\/p>\n

But I concluded that by itself, this is incomplete.\u00a0There\u00a0is a deeper source that doesn\u2019t fluctuate based on external conditions. The sense of\u00a0fulfillment<\/b>\u00a0imparts is immediate and unconditional.<\/p>\n

Meditation is one doorway to this dimension.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0in reflection, not all experiences of fulfillment are equal. I wanted to share what I\u2019m seeing constitutes\u00a0the kind of fulfillment that changes your life.<\/p>\n

Embrace the entirety of your life<\/h2>\n

What I appreciate\u00a0about\u00a0Gibr\u00e1n\u2019s\u00a0inquiry into fulfillment is it points you to\u00a0embrace the entirety of your life as it is now.\u00a0Meditation is\u00a0both\u00a0a gift\u00a0and a path\u00a0for engaging\u00a0the\u00a0overflowing\u00a0abundance of good fortune that is\u00a0already\u00a0in our lives.<\/p>\n

As you shed boundaries between you and your present\u00a0experience,\u00a0you\u2019ve likely encountered a visceral happiness simply to be alive.<\/p>\n

Like an enormous waterfall, existence\u00a0pours miracles over us that\u2019s\u00a0easy to\u00a0take for granted. Consider the act of breathing, the sight of sunlight\u00a0through trees, the touch of someone we love.<\/p>\n

Meditation can re-awaken us to how blessed we are.<\/h2>\n

And if you can\u2019t emotionally connect with it presently, watch what happens when something you\u2019ve taken for granted disappears.<\/p>\n

For example, I\u2019ve been training\u00a0for a\u00a0spring\u00a0marathon with more commitment than I ever have: running 50-60 miles a week\u00a0amidst my career\u00a0and family responsibilities. It\u2019s been a thrill and a joy.<\/p>\n

Until I\u00a0recently\u00a0encountered my first injury after months of\u00a0this\u00a0intensity.<\/p>\n

The visceral shock of my body\u2019s refusal to continue executing on\u00a0my plan literally and metaphorically stopped me in my tracks. I\u2019m engaging in healing now, and\u00a0to simply run unencumbered\u00a0from pain\u00a0feels like flying.<\/p>\n

Gratitude<\/h2>\n

It would behoove us not to make\u00a0soul-expanding\u00a0gratitude so costly\u00a0when we are already wealthy beyond measure. I think of the loved ones in my life.<\/p>\n

Yet,\u00a0I\u2019m seeing gratitude as only part of the experience of profound fulfillment.\u00a0And that\u2019s because without reciprocation, on an existential level we will be incomplete.<\/p>\n

In other\u00a0words, because I have received\u00a0so much, I want to give back.<\/p>\n

Indebtedness<\/h2>\n

The other side of gratitude is indebtedness.\u00a0It is a longing to\u00a0express\u00a0and contribute\u00a0in\u00a0some meaningful way the beauty\u00a0you already feel.\u00a0This is no easy task.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s so hard because it\u2019s\u00a0endeavoring to\u00a0give voice to\u00a0that\u00a0which\u00a0seems to have no beginning and no end.\u00a0It\u2019s so compelling though because it seems so close and so far away at the same time.<\/p>\n

The fulfillment in this lies not in its\u00a0actual accomplishment but in the\u00a0ongoing pursuit to align this\u00a0ineffable\u00a0intention with one\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n

There will certainly be grand and small achievements as a result of this effort; they will be manifestations\u00a0of the\u00a0fiery\u00a0joy churning within.<\/p>\n

We fulfill ourselves instantly\u00a0through great\u00a0inner\u00a0exertion\u00a0to be true to ourselves.\u00a0But how fulfilled\u00a0can we be? How fulfilled do we actually want to be?<\/p>\n

You see, we are all in a race against Time.<\/h2>\n

No one knows where the finish line is. And the beautiful thing is there are infinite pathways to get there.<\/p>\n

Paradoxically, it\u2019s race where you don\u2019t win by being\u00a0the fastest. But you do have to be the best.<\/p>\n

And what I mean by best in this particular race was best captured\u00a0for me\u00a0by four-time Olympic track and field gold medalist Jesse Owens:<\/p>\n

\n

The battles that count aren\u2019t the ones for gold medals. The struggles within yourself\u2013the invisible, inevitable battles inside all of us\u2013that\u2019s where it\u2019s at.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In the road of both achievement and fulfillment (and it\u2019s likely the same road), these obstacles will never cease.<\/p>\n

They are real,\u00a0hard, arduous, and\u00a0may cripple us\u00a0along the way. Perhaps even incapacitate us.\u00a0Often though, they will transform and liberate us.<\/p>\n

But we will have run our race. And\u00a0if we make it our own it will be glorious.<\/p>\n
