Jacob Hornberger <\/span>recently<\/span><\/a>
\n rightly questioned the federal government\u2019s role in MAHA, shorthand for
\n the Make America Healthy Again movement led by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
\n(RFKJ). An inveterate statist, RFKJ may very well employ state power to
\nseek retribution against those responsible for Covid vaccination
\nmandates and other causes of the <\/span>excess deaths<\/span><\/a> that have plagued the U.S. and other wealthy nations since 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Unfortunately,
\n if Americans are to live longer, healthier lives, the government will
\nhave to be involved, in a sense. It will have to reverse the many
\npolicies that it put into place that cause so many untimely deaths and
\nso much disability, which has also <\/span>increased markedly<\/span><\/a> since 2021. To achieve MAHA, in other words, Americans need Elon Musk\u2019s and Vivek Ramaswamy\u2019s DOGE (<\/span>Department of Government Efficiency<\/span><\/a>) and private market innovation more than they need RFKJ.<\/span><\/p>\n

For
\n starters, the government should not be in the same business as
\nnutritionists. It should stop telling Americans what is \u201chealthy\u201d and
\nwhat is not because government bureaucrats do not know and have no
\nincentive to provide good advice, which must be highly tailored due to
\ninnate human heterogeneity (\u201cdiversity\u201d in Woke parlance). The Food
\nPyramid alone kills more Americans than the Civil War did.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\n government should also get out of the life annuity business or the
\nhealth insurance business (or better yet, both) because forcing older
\nAmericans into both Social Security and Medicare creates perverse
\nincentives: one part of the government wants retirees dead, while
\nanother is in charge of keeping them alive. Nobody in their right mind
\nwould buy both an annuity and health insurance from the same company but
\n yet Americans are forced into the unnatural arrangement with Uncle Sam.<\/span><\/p>\n

Obamacare
\n clearly failed. Instead of a new government-led \u201cplan,\u201d let\u2019s let
\nmarket forces work, as they do in the many areas of the economy that
\nmake our lives better. Sean Masaki Flynn makes a powerful argument for
\nmoving towards a market-based system like that of Singapore in his 2019
\nbook, <\/span>The Cure that Works<\/span>.
\n Singaporeans are much healthier than Americans, and indeed almost
\neveryone else in the world, but spend only a quarter of what Americans
\ndo on healthcare. The most telling stat in the book is that in the US,
\neach healthcare provider (HCP) needs on average four administrators to
\ndo paperwork. In Singapore, HCPs outnumber administrators four to one.<\/span><\/p>\n

Americans
\n do not even need a government-funded \u201cpublic health\u201d apparatus or
\nresearch funding system like that long run by Anthony Fauci. Before the
\nrise of the administrative state in the postwar period, life insurers
\ndid the sort of outreach and research that is the basis for MAHA \u2013 don\u2019t
\n smoke or use alcohol or drugs to excess, wash your hands after using
\nthe bathroom, and watch what you eat and drink is like 90 percent of it.
\n They backed up their claims with higher premiums, incentivizing people
\nto follow through or to pay for the greater risks they imposed on
\nthemselves and others.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today,
\n unfortunately, life insurers tend to shy away from such activities for
\nfear of regulatory reprisals. That is unfortunate because life insurance
\n regulations are unnecessary because the their reinsurers carefully
\nmonitor their financial health and the market is competitive. Moreover,
\nlife insurers, not the government, are the large institutions most
\ninterested in MAHA and the ones best equipped to induce Americans to
\nmake healthier choices at the table and in the gym.<\/span><\/p>\n

In
\n fact, life and health insurance arguably ought to be covered in the
\nsame policy, with insureds who use more health insurance getting a
\nsmaller payout when they die than those who remained healthier (all
\nother factors constant, of course). Regulators, though, stymie
\nexperimentation with such innovative new approaches, the suppression of
\nwhich allows other statists to push for Medicare-for-all and other forms
\n of socialized medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n

In short, to achieve MAHA, the MAGA movement should look more to DOGE and private market incentives than to RFKJ.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
