It was all part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/unleashing-american-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (larger effort)\">larger effort<\/a> on the President\u2019s part to \u201cunleash America\u2019s energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President has also tried to freeze clean energy investments that were passed through the Biden Administration\u2019s Inflation Reduction Act. But Judge John McConnell of the U.S. District Court of Rhode Island <a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/06032025\/judge-blocks-trump-inflation-reduction-act-funding-freeze\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (issued)\">issued<\/a> a preliminary injunction against that effort, noting in his decision that the executive branch does not have the power to block spending approved by Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Or, as McConnell put it, Trump\u2019s \u201ccategorical freeze of appropriated and obligated funds fundamentally undermines the distinct constitutional roles of each branch of our government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oil and gas production hit <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/under-both-trump-and-biden-harris-us-oil-and-gas-production-surged-to-record-highs-despite-very-different-energy-goals-236859\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (record highs)\">record highs<\/a> under former President Joe Biden, despite his talk of a decarbonized future. On the other hand, coal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2025-03-18\/trump-ramp-up-production-of-beautiful-clean-coal\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (accounting)\">accounting<\/a> for 16 percent of the nation\u2019s power production, is in steep decline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump is aware of the economic decay in places such as West Virginia, where coal production <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/catalyzing-a-just-transition-from-coal-to-clean-energy-in-west-virginias-coalfields\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (dropped by 60 percent)\">dropped by 60 percent<\/a>\u00a0between 2008 and 2015 following President Barack Obama\u2019s emissions regulations. That state, where \u201cblack gold\u201d used to be a synonym for financial prosperity, was once a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/west-virginia-how-bluest-state-became-reddest-n697491\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (bastion)\">bastion<\/a>\u00a0for labor unions and the Democratic Party. Today, the Republican Party mines support from West Virginians by promising them a coal-powered future.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in my career as a climate and clean energy policy advocate, I traveled to the Mountain State to learn about its challenges amid the coal industry\u2019s decline. In McDowell County, one of the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/data.census.gov\/profile\/McDowell_County,_West_Virginia?g=050XX00US54047\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (poorest)\">poorest<\/a> areas, I spoke with three women over lunch at a nonprofit, where they worked in child care serving low-income families.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The women opened up to me about the impacts of the coal decline, including a high unemployment rate, food insecurity, and the opioid crisis. They also spoke about the health issues their family members accumulated from working in the coal fields, including \u201cblack lung disease,\u201d which has been found to <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/25135-black-lung-disease\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (decrease)\">decrease<\/a> life expectancy by about 12.6 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While places like McDowell County <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestplaces.net\/voting\/county\/west_virginia\/mcdowell\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (overwhelmingly supported)\">overwhelmingly supported<\/a> Trump in the 2016, 2020, and 2024 elections, the sitting President\u2019s motivation for bringing back coal isn\u2019t the Mountaineers. He wants to catch up with China and its sprawling economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But while China is still heavily reliant on coal, solar power is <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7265783\/how-china-is-boosting-renewable-energy-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (expected to become)\">expected to become<\/a> the country\u2019s largest energy source by 2026. If Trump really cared about competition with China, he wouldn\u2019t be trying to repeal Biden\u2019s nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/public-sector\/our-insights\/the-inflation-reduction-act-heres-whats-in-it\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window ($400 billion investments)\">$400 billion investments<\/a> in clean energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump also wants to burn more coal to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/04\/08\/trump-seeks-to-prop-up-coal-to-feed-ai-power-demand\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (power)\">power<\/a> the tech industry\u2019s artificial intelligence aspirations. But coal-powered AI will not save the economy. Society cannot progress by using the fuels of the past.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The future of America\u2019s energy economy is a serious matter, as is the well-being of places like West Virginia. Executive orders are not going to \u201cstabilize\u201d the economy. They are only temporary political tools, easily repealable by succeeding administrations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the clean energy investments passed under Biden have <a href=\"https:\/\/climatepower.us\/news\/new-report-more-than-400000-new-clean-energy-jobs-have-been-created-since-ira-passage\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (created)\">created<\/a> more than 400,000 jobs, predominantly benefitting Republican-held districts. Four GOP senators\u2014Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska; John Curtis, Republican of Utah; Thom Tillis, Republican of North Carolina;\u00a0and Jerry Moran, Republican of Kansas\u2014recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtis.senate.gov\/press-releases\/curtis-murkowski-tillis-moran-express-support-for-energy-tax-credits\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (urged )\">urged <\/a>Majority Leader John Thune, Republican of South Dakota, not to repeal Biden-crafted clean energy tax credits, which received no GOP support when Congress passed them in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you too care about the future of America\u2019s energy economy, call upon the Republican leadership and your members of Congress to protect federal clean energy investments. Renewable power is already making America more secure.
