Among those affected is Mohammed Salem, a Palestinian taxi driver whose life has been irrevocably altered by the war. Like many others, Mohammed\u2019s once-peaceful existence was upended when Israeli forces launched a full-scale assault on Gaza, displacing him and his family.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mohammed\u2019s story is one of heartbreak, grief, and a desperate father trying to keep his children safe. In December 2023, his one-and-a-half-year-old son\u2019s health began to quickly deteriorate due to the lack of basic needs like sanitation. Mohammed had to make the unthinkable decision to fight for his child\u2019s life in the middle of a war zone as the boy\u2019s condition worsened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy heart was torn apart for him,\u201d Mohammed says. \u201cHe was hurting so badly, and I didn\u2019t even know what was wrong with him. I felt helpless\u2014completely powerless\u2014and I had no idea what I could do to ease his pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Before the war, Mohammed, who is in his thirties, cherished weekends with his family, treating his three daughters and young son to ice cream. But in October 2023, those simple joys vanished.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2024, Mohammed and his family were forced to flee their home near Gaza\u2019s eastern border under Israeli evacuation orders. They sought refuge in Al-Sinaa, a neighborhood west of Gaza City, ending up in a severely overcrowded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrwa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees)\">United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees<\/a> (UNRWA) shelter, where thousands of displaced families <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/10\/27\/displaced-palestinians-in-overcrowded-un-schools-face-outbreak-of-disease\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (struggled)\">struggled<\/a> to survive.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammed recalls the shelter being \u201cunbearable.\u201d Upon arrival, the family couldn\u2019t find any room in the Al-Sinaa UNRWA building, which was filled with other displaced people from across Gaza. Desperate, he was forced to break the lock of a generator room of the building for the family to shelter inside. He describes the conditions as nightmarish.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no food, no water\u2014just the stench of sewage filling the air and sticking to our skin,\u201d he says. \u201cWe were starving, suffocating\u2026 praying for a way out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many shelters, originally designed for a few hundred people, were pushed to the brink. According to UNRWA, some facilities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrwa.org\/resources\/reports\/unrwa-situation-report-14-gaza-strip-and-west-bank-including-east-jerusalem#:~:text=Overcrowding%20conditions%20in%20UNRWA%20shelters,people%20than%20their%20designed%20capacity.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (housed)\">housed<\/a> ten to twelve times their capacity, with one school in Khan Younis sheltering approximately 21,000 people. The extreme congestion, poor sanitation, and the collapse of basic services such as medical care and sewage removal turned these shelters into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2949916X24000203#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20Ministry%20of,basic%20sanitation%20is%20often%20compromised.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (breeding grounds)\">breeding grounds<\/a> for disease.<\/p>\n<p>By mid-December 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/21-12-2023-lethal-combination-of-hunger-and-disease-to-lead-to-more-deaths-in-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (already recorded)\">already recorded<\/a> more than 150,000 cases of upper respiratory infections and more than 100,000 cases of diarrhea\u2014half in children under five\u2014a staggering increase of twenty-five times the pre-war number of monthly diarrhea cases. Skin infections had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/gallery\/2024\/7\/3\/dangerous-skin-diseases-spreading-among-children-in-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (also)\">also<\/a> become rampant, with 96,417 cases of scabies and lice, 9,274 cases of chickenpox, and 60,130 cases of skin rash by July 2024.<\/p>\n<p>As weeks passed, his son\u2019s health began to deteriorate. The toddler grew increasingly frail, eventually losing the ability to walk. Most of his time was spent lying on his back, too weak to move.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe watched his strength slip away,\u201d Mohammed says. \u201cSeeing him like that broke us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doctors diagnosed him with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/meningitis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20350508#:~:text=Meningitis%20is%20an%20infection%20and,fever%20and%20a%20stiff%20neck.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (meningitis)\">meningitis<\/a>, a life-threatening infection that inflames the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord. Without urgent medical care, the boy faced the risk of brain damage, hearing loss, or even death. Desperate, Mohammed searched every hospital in Gaza for treatment, but the ongoing war <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10768328\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (had severely impeded)\">had severely impeded<\/a> the health care system.<\/p>\n<p>His biggest concern was confirmed when a doctor at Nasser Hospital told him there was no cure for his son in Gaza, and the toddler would need to be treated abroad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feared the worst,\u201d Mohammed recalls. \u201cHow could such a tiny, fragile child face it all alone? Who would take care of him there?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But securing treatment outside the besieged enclave was nearly impossible. The shutdown of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2025\/03\/israels-decision-to-cut-off-electricity-supply-to-gaza-desalination-plant-cruel-and-unlawful\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (desalination plants)\">desalination plants<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.undp.org\/a-silent-threat-gazas-struggle-with-solid-waste-management\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (solid waste collection)\">solid waste collection<\/a> due to fuel shortages further worsened health conditions, increasing the spread of bacterial infections as people resorted to drinking contaminated water.<\/p>\n<p>After a long and agonizing struggle, Mohammed finally obtained permission to send his son abroad for treatment. But that victory came at a painful cost\u2014he and his wife had to stay behind, barred by Israel from leaving Gaza.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t shake the feeling that we might never be a family again, that we might never reunite,\u201d Mohammed says.<\/p>\n<p>They have now been separated from their son for more than a year and a half.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the start of the war, thousands of critically ill Palestinian patients have <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/04\/1162206#:~:text=Far%20too%20few%20patients%20have,121%20people%2C%20including%2073%20children.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (sought medical evacuation)\">sought medical evacuation<\/a>, but many remain trapped due to border closures and bureaucratic delays. Now, the distance between Mohammed\u2019s family and their son grows wider\u2014both physically and emotionally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe doctors abroad told me my son is starting to forget me,\u201d Mohammed says, his voice heavy with grief. \u201cI fear I will never see him again, that I will be killed here before I get the chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With war still raging around him, Mohammed\u2019s only plea is to be reunited with his son before it\u2019s too late.
