Mary Henlin creates small statues of Isis, Hecate, and Kali using a classic Marian mold. As she said in <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/oWh9DYKZsPk?t=446\">the Healing Home podcast<\/a> in 2024, \u201cThe Divine Mother is woven through everything in the world. And in every culture, she\u2019s touched everything, and everyone has their interpretations of her, whether it be Kali, \u2026 the Black Madonna, \u2026 [the Virgin of] Guadalupe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Th\u00e9r\u00e8se also sees Mary as an archetype repeated throughout many cultures. \u201cI think there are certain things built into the human consciousness that appear a lot and that we come up with new shells for, and I think she\u2019s one of those,\u201d Th\u00e9r\u00e8se said in an interview with me. \u201cShe embodies the energy of the God Mother, the God Queen. She\u2019s somehow Hera, Persephone, and Demeter at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unlike Grobler and Mary Henlin, Th\u00e9r\u00e8se believes Mary started out as a human and was given a divine nature by people who adore her. \u201cAs Christianity blew up and as Marian devotion blew up, I feel like she became a goddess in that way, in the minds of the people,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">But whether goddess worshippers see Mary as a deity or a human, they must still grapple with the fact that Mary has often been wielded as a weapon to oppress women.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading__1\" style=\"font-weight: 400\">RECLAIMING MARY FROM THE PATRIARCHY<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the Bible, Mary is described as a virgin who has found favor with God, which is why she has been chosen to miraculously give birth to the son of God. In the Gospel of Luke, Mary agrees to bear Jesus, calling herself a humble servant whose \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+1%3A46-55&amp;version=NIV\">soul glorifies the Lord<\/a>.\u201d She then praises God through what feminist biblical scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartfordinternational.edu\/faculty\/amy-jill-levine\">Amy-Jill Levine<\/a> has called a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/broadview.org\/virgin-mary-prophet\/\">manifesto of social justice<\/a>,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+1%3A46-55&amp;version=NIV\">saying that God<\/a> has brought down the proud, rich, and powerful, and lifted up the poor, hungry, and pious.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Bible says very little else about Mary. Because she is described briefly and ambiguously, Mary is open to interpretation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Those interpretations have often harmed women. In Catholicism, Mary is believed to have remained a virgin throughout her marriage. \u201cThe ever-Virgin diminishes women\u2019s sexuality and makes the female body and female sexuality seem unwholesome, impure,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-the-cult-of-virgin-mary-turned-a-symbol-of-female-authority-into-a-tool-of-patriarchy-127806\">writes religious scholar<\/a> Dorothy Ann Lee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Latin America, colonial missionaries imposed a cultural construct called <em>marianismo<\/em>, which sends a message to women that they should be like Mary: chaste, maternal, submissive, and self-sacrificing. <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5102330\/#R13\">Studies have found<\/a> that <em>marianismo<\/em> may be associated with poorer health outcomes for some women, including increased symptoms of depression. In addition, the portrayal of Mary as White has been leveraged to <a href=\"https:\/\/qmhistoryjournal.wixsite.com\/qmhj\/post\/how-did-the-figure-of-the-virgin-mary-offer-a-bridge-between-indigenous-cultures-and-christianity\">enforce racism<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/baptistnews.com\/article\/pantyhose-purity-and-the-theological-implications-of-the-virgin-mary\/#:~:text=blemish%20or%20imperfections.%E2%80%9D-,Mary%20represents%20whiteness%20in%20its%20most%20idealistic%20form%20%E2%80%94%20the%20absence,with%20dirt%2C%20unclean%20and%20unsaved.\">falsely equate<\/a>\u00a0Whiteness with goodness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">But starting in the late 20th century, feminist theologians have been reexamining Mary\u2019s story through the lens of liberation theology. Religious scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/research.library.fordham.edu\/dissertations\/AAI9825868\/#:~:text=Mary%20as%20prophetic%20disciple%2C%20therefore,and%20the%20inhumanity%20of%20oppression.\">Mary McGovern Treyz writes<\/a> that \u201cMary as prophetic disciple \u2026 is not the passive, humble handmaiden of traditional Catholicism, but a revolutionary prophetic voice calling out for the liberation of all who suffer the indignity of poverty and the inhumanity of oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mary Henlin\u2014a Marian artist who, along with her sister Sahra Henlin, is a member of the Temple of Mary\u2014also shares this view.
