The office, at the site of a former grocery store that closed a few years ago, will serve as the central hub for the multi-year effort to build\u00a0a four-lane divided highway from Thomasville to Moundville.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At peak construction, the West Alabama Highway is expected to employ approximately 700 workers, further boosting the local economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Demopolis headquarters will serve as the central coordinating location for all construction work, housing project management, project supervision, engineering teams and logistical operations. This site will be a hub of activity, ensuring efficient communication and oversight across the entire project area while also providing a direct link between the Alabama Department of Transportation, Brasfield and Gorrie \u2013 the general contractor for the West Alabama Highway project \u2013 and its subcontractors, suppliers and the local community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Demopolis Mayor Woody Collins welcomed the announcement, saying,\u00a0\u201cDemopolis is proud to be the home base for this transformational infrastructure project. Having the construction headquarters here means jobs and increased activity for our local economy. We are excited to support this effort and look forward to seeing the long-term, positive impact this highway will have on our region.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Senator Bobby Singleton also praised the decision. \u201cThis is an exciting step forward for the West Alabama Highway project, and I\u2019m thrilled that Demopolis was chosen as the headquarters location,\u201d said Senator Singleton. \u201cThe West Alabama Highway will connect communities, attract business opportunities, provide safer travel and create jobs. Today\u2019s announcement is another milestone in making that vision a reality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Tony Harris, a spokesperson for the Alabama Department of Transportation, said, \u201cFor decades, West Alabama heard repeated promises of a major highway in the area. It wasn\u2019t until Governor Kay Ivey and the Legislature stepped forward in 2019 to pass the Rebuild Alabama Act that the project finally became a priority and started moving forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Kevin White, a regional vice president for Brasfield and Gorrie, said, \u201cSelecting Demopolis for the West Alabama Highway field office makes perfect sense. This location allows us to coordinate efficiently across the entire project. Construction will ramp up in the coming months, with the office serving as a vital operations center throughout the project\u2019s duration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Renovations are currently underway at the site of the former grocery to prepare for the opening of the construction hub, which is expected to take place in a few months. About 120 team members will work out of the Demopolis location each day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The West Alabama Highway is a landmark infrastructure project for the state. It will add lanes to U.S. Highway 43 and State Route 69 to provide a four-lane divided highway from Thomasville to Moundville, with five bypasses to divert truck traffic from town centers.
