The creators of the soft tissue simulation system will receive Scientific and Technical Awards \u2013 the Oscars of the tech world \u2013 later today.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The developers of soft tissue simulation system Ziva VFX and of render denoising technologies including Open Image Denoise have <a href=\"https:\/\/press.oscars.org\/news\/14-achievements-be-honored-scientific-and-technical-awardsr\" target=\"_blank\">won Academy Scientific and Technical Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The award ceremony, originally scheduled for February, but postponed in the wake of the Los Angeles wildfires, will be presented at a ceremony in Hollywood later today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recognition for soft-tissue simulation tech Ziva VFX<\/strong><br \/>Ziva VFX becomes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/?s=sci-tech&amp;x=0&amp;y=0\" target=\"_blank\">latest CG tool<\/a> to be recognized at the Scientific and Technical Awards.<\/p>\n<p>The Maya muscle and tissue simulation plugin, originally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/2017\/04\/ziva-dynamics-releases-free-trial-of-ziva-vfx-for-maya\/\" target=\"_blank\">released in 2016<\/a>, was used in high-profile VFX projects including Dune, many recent Marvel movies, and Game of Thrones.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy citation praised its \u201cartist-friendly interface\u201d and \u201crobust, physically accurate solver\u201d, enabling \u201ca broad range of studios to bring visually rich creatures to life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Technical Achievement Award goes to five former staff of original developer Ziva Dynamics, including R&amp;D Lead Essex Edwards, and co-founders James Jacobs and Jernej Barbi\u010d.<\/p>\n<p>Jacobs, formerly Creature Supervisor at Weta Digital, had previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oscars.org\/sci-tech\/ceremonies\/2013\" target=\"_blank\">won a Scientific and Engineering Award<\/a> for his work developing Weta\u2019s in-house tissue simulation system.<\/p>\n<p>Ziva Dynamics was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/2022\/01\/unity-acquires-ziva-dynamics\/\" target=\"_blank\">acquired by Unity in 2022<\/a>, and Ziva VFX itself was sadly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/2024\/04\/unity-discontinues-the-ziva-products\/\" target=\"_blank\">discontinued as a commercial product in 2024<\/a> following Unity\u2019s then-ongoing series of layoffs.<\/p>\n<p>However, VFX firm DNEG, which used Ziva in production, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dneg.com\/news\/dneg-acquires-exclusive-license-to-ziva-technologies-from-unity\" target=\"_blank\">acquired an exclusive license<\/a> to the toolset, along with key staff including Sci-Tech Award-winner Crawford Doran.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Intel\u00ae Open Image Denoise | Intel Software\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/USBQ9HsFjfk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Further awards for open-source and proprietary denoising tools<\/strong><br \/>Further awards go to the developers of key render denoising technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Denoising is now widely used in VFX production pipelines based around ray tracing, in which renders are initially noisy, but resolve progressively towards a noise-free image.<\/p>\n<p>Stopping a render early, then using denoising software to remove the remaining noise, often results in a usable-quality image more quickly than allowing the render to resolve fully.<\/p>\n<p>Intel Principal Engineer Attila \u00c1fra wins a Technical Achievement Award for his work on the open-source <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openimagedenoise.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Open Image Denoise<\/a> (OIDN) library.<\/p>\n<p>Originally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/2019\/01\/intel-releases-open-source-denoiser-open-image-denoise\/\" target=\"_blank\">released in 2019<\/a> for CPU denoising, and later extended to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/2023\/07\/intel-releases-open-image-denoise-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">support GPU denoising<\/a>, OIDN is now used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/?s=open+image+denoise&amp;x=0&amp;y=0\" target=\"_blank\">production renderers<\/a> including Arnold and V-Ray.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy citation notes its \u201celegant API\u201d and support for \u201cdiverse hardware\u201d, leading to broad industry adoption.<\/p>\n<p>The award goes jointly to NVIDIA Senior Research Scientist Timo Aila, for his work developing the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/academy-award-scientific-technical-film-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\">U-Net AI denoising architecture<\/a> implemented in OIDN and NVIDIA\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.nvidia.com\/optix-denoiser\" target=\"_blank\">OptiX denoiser<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another Technical Achievement Award goes to W\u0113t\u0101 FX CTO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wetafx.co.nz\/about\/people\/executives\/kimball-thurston\" target=\"_blank\">Kimball Thurston<\/a> and Senior Rendering Researcher Javor Kalojanov for their work on the VFX studio\u2019s ML Denoiser.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy praised its \u201cnovel training strategies [that] allow its machine learning algorithms to denoise computer-generated imagery to the most exacting standards\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Five current and former Disney staff share a Scientific and Engineering Achievement Award for their work on Disney\u2019s own ML Denoiser, used in production at Pixar and ILM, and now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgchannel.com\/2022\/08\/renderman-25-to-feature-the-ai-denoiser-used-on-lightyear\/\" target=\"_blank\">integrated into RenderMan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other awards range from audio post to burn gels for fire stunts<\/strong><br \/>Other 2025 Sci-Tech awards go to audio post-production tools, and to captioning and camera stabilization tech \u2013 although for once, not all are for digital, or even mechanical, technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Three further awards go to the developers of modern burn gels used in fire stunts, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/thereactionlab.com\/blog\/a-fiery-innovation-dustin-brooks-and-colin-decker-to-be-awarded-a-2025-oscar-for-naked-burn-gel\" target=\"_blank\">naked burn gel<\/a> developed for the tanning bed death sequence in Final Destination 3.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.oscars.org\/news\/14-achievements-be-honored-scientific-and-technical-awardsr\" target=\"_blank\">Read the full list of winners for 2025\u2019s Scientific and Technical Academy Awards<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Have your say on this story by following CG Channel on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cgchannel\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thecgchannel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/theCGchannel\" target=\"_blank\">X (formerly Twitter)<\/a>.
