{"id":213298,"date":"2025-04-29T18:45:19","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T18:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/activist\/legalized-bribery-is-destroying-our-democracy\/"},"modified":"2025-04-29T18:45:19","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T18:45:19","slug":"legalized-bribery-is-destroying-our-democracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=213298","title":{"rendered":"Legalized Bribery Is Destroying Our Democracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"content\" data-transition=\"content\" data-loop=\"false\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"lead\">In his new two-film documentary presentation, <em>The Dark Money Game, <\/em>director Alex Gibney argues that democracy dies not just in darkness, per the erstwhile<em> Washington Post <\/em>slogan, but in dark money. <em>The Dark Money Game<\/em> painstakingly details how the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s 2010 <em>Citizens United<\/em> ruling let the genie of unregulated campaign funds from undisclosed contributors out of the proverbial bottle, deeply corrupting the U.S. electoral system and judiciary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As Gibney tells <em>The Progressive<\/em>: \u201cWhen you effectively give a candidate money, and ask for something in return, that\u2019s corruption. That\u2019s bribery. It\u2019s simple: That\u2019s quid pro quo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gibney\u2019s stepfather is the Reverend William Sloane Coffin, a renowned antiwar clergyman, so perhaps it\u2019s not surprising that, after graduating from Yale and studying cinema at the University of California, Los Angeles, he went on to make nonfiction films documenting unscrupulous elites and their abuses of power and human rights. His 2007 <em>Taxi to the Dark Side <\/em>about torture in Afghanistan won the Academy Award for Best Documentary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>The Dark Money Game<\/em>, Gibney\u2019s latest endeavor, derives its title from the 2008 book, <em>The Dark Side: <\/em><em>The Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned into a War on American Ideals <\/em>by Jane Mayer, <em>The New Yorker <\/em>magazine staff writer and investigative journalist. Mayer, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/press-room\/the-new-yorkers-jane-mayer-and-rachel-aviv-win-polk-award\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (won)\">won<\/a> a George Polk Award last February, appears in <em>The Dark Money Game<\/em>, which she also executive produced. Mayer contends that <em>Citizens United<\/em> unleashed \u201clegalized bribery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hard-hitting pair of films,\u00a0 each about two hours long, unfold like a fictional whodunit. The first film, <em>Ohio Confidential<\/em>, recounts the investigation into whether Neil Clark, a prominent Ohio lobbyist who was found shot dead in March 2021, was murdered or committed suicide. The investigators uncover what appears to be a vast conspiracy involving $60 million in campaign contributions from the nuclear power company FirstEnergy, which was seeking a $1 billion taxpayer-funded bailout from the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Enabled by<em> Citizens United<\/em>, FirstEnergy flooded Ohio state legislators with $60 million worth of campaign cash in order to influence the lawmakers to provide FirstEnergy with $1 billion of taxpayer money to bail the nuclear power company out.<\/p>\n<p>The second film, titled <em>Wealth of the Wicked<\/em>, examines maneuvers to circumvent the 2002 McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Bill, which restricted cash contributions in the political arena. Gibney, who also narrates the series, interviews former Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold, a liberal Democrat who had teamed up with Arizona Republican Senator John McCain to pass stricter campaign finance rules. The film also zooms in on attorney James Bopp, who <em>The New York Times<\/em> said in a May 2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/12\/books\/review\/the-federalist-society-by-michael-avery-and-danielle-mclaughlin.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (article)\">article<\/a> is \u201ccredited as being the intellectual architect of the arguments that persuaded the Supreme Court in <em>Citizens United<\/em>.\u201d Gibney calls Bopp an \u201cextremely anti-abortion\u201d zealot determined to bring about \u201cwhat I\u2019d call \u2018an unholy alliance\u2019 between big business and evangelical Christians.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gibney\u2019s documentary traces how the movement to torpedo campaign finance laws went hand-in-hand with efforts to intrude into women\u2019s privacy and bodily autonomy; campaign finance was deregulated as abortion rights were re-regulated. Former extremist Reverend Robert Schenck\u2014who once held a human fetus at a demonstration outside of a Buffalo abortion clinic in 1992, but eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/07\/11\/628000131\/once-militantly-anti-abortion-evangelical-minister-now-lives-with-regret\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (recanted)\">recanted<\/a> his zealotry\u2014appears for some on-screen interviews.<\/p>\n<p>I asked Gibney whether the possibility of getting dark money out of politics is further away than ever, now that the billionaires are in charge. He doesn\u2019t think so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can see the depth, fervor, and anger that is rippling throughout this society by the number of people showing up for the demonstrations held by [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] and Bernie Sanders,\u201d Gibney says. \u201cYou\u2019re going to see such rage and popular animus\u2014you saw it a little bit in Wisconsin recently, where despite the millions of dollars spent by one oligarch, Elon Musk, the voters <a href=\"https:\/\/progressive.org\/latest\/wisconsin-voters-rebuke-elon-musk-in-state-supreme-court-election-lueders-20250403\/\">rose up<\/a> and overturned the party of money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Dark Money Game <\/em>is the latest production in Alex Gibney\u2019s audacious oeuvre to hold the powers-that-be to account.
