{"id":213016,"date":"2025-04-29T15:29:05","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T15:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/white-house-lashes-out-at-hostile-and-political-act-by-amazon\/"},"modified":"2025-04-29T15:29:05","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T15:29:05","slug":"white-house-lashes-out-at-hostile-and-political-act-by-amazon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=213016","title":{"rendered":"White House lashes out at \u2018hostile and political act by Amazon\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what Trump\u2019s second term means for Washington, business and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=a06e80e7-97d0-4f29-9153-1e4219a88713&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The White House has lashed out at what it called a \u201chostile and political act by Amazon\u201d after a report alleged that the tech giant was planning to display price increases caused by Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs on its products.<\/p>\n<p>The story originally reported by Punchbowl News on Tuesday said that the ecommerce giant would \u201csoon\u201d display the impact of the levies on \u201cthe price of each product\u201d it sold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?\u201d White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>She added that it was \u201cnot a surprise\u201d that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/84cf4073-a674-4a93-aef9-dcc1832a65cb\" data-trackable=\"link\">Amazon<\/a> would take such a step. <\/p>\n<p>However, the Seattle-based group later clarified that such a move had only been considered for goods sold via its low-cost Haul platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe team that runs our ultra low-cost Amazon Haul store has considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products,\u201d Amazon said. \u201cThis was never a consideration for the main Amazon site and nothing has been implemented on any Amazon properties.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was never approved and is not going to happen,\u201d the company added.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has repaired ties with Trump, whom he had once criticised as a \u201cthreat to democracy\u201d but whose second inauguration he attended this year.<\/p>\n<p>During his first term, Trump frequently lashed out at Bezos, calling him \u201cJeff Bozo\u201d and accusing the billionaire of buying the Washington Post to secure \u201cpolitical influence so that Amazon will benefit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But the relationship between the two men has since warmed, with Bezos meeting Trump multiple times in the past year.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon donated $1mn to Trump\u2019s inauguration fund and paid $40mn for a Melania Trump documentary. He\u2019s been great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amazon\u2019s Haul platform sells cheap consumer goods directly shipped from Chinese warehouses to take advantage of duty exemptions known as de minimis rules, a loophole that the White House will close from May 2.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/donald-trump\" data-trackable=\"link\">Trump<\/a> this month announced steep \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs on dozens of US trading partners, sending global markets plummeting.
