Knowing that there will only be the single, present moment to perform, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/topic\/london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">London<\/a>-based DJ and producer can often get \u201cexistential\u201d. But on pressing play \u2013 and in particular, on a track with triplets \u2013 those jitters quickly disappear, and the moment shrinks to pure focus between herself, the music, and the crowd, as she finds herself in the much-treasured \u2018flow state\u2019.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A flow state is that fleeting splurge of creativity, when time shifts and warps, and the mind focuses so tightly on a task that it lets go of any external distractions. It\u2019s something that scientists have sought to understand for generations, with one psychologist even calling it \u201cthe secret to happiness\u201d.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But what <em>exactly <\/em>is a flow state? In truth, landing within these creative states of mind are deeply personal experiences. They come and go in an infinite range of ways for different individuals and creative practices, and can be so meditative that they are hard to put a finger on, with consciousness only returning once a task is done.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s something that music tech outfit AlphaTheta have been seeking to find out more about in recent times, and to channel in their recent work.\u00a0Their feature-length documentary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/clubbing-good-for-health-brain-neuroscientists\"><em>We Become One<\/em><\/a>, saw them reach out to neuroscientists to hear about the impact of dance music on the brain, and of shared musical experiences.\u00a0 The company\u2019s name even references the alpha and theta brainwaves, which scientists have found to be linked to relaxation and focus respectively, and the flow found in the\u00a0optimal state of mind that DJs reach when they perform and share their music with crowds.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">To try and understand flow states more, and particularly how and why creative minds channel it, we teamed up with AlphaTheta and caught up with three of our favourite artists \u2013 DJ &amp; producer object blue, DJ &amp; chef <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/joelmignott\/?hl=en-gb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joel Mignott<\/a>, and DJ &amp; illustrator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/noanunoparty\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anu Ambasna<\/a> \u2013 to find out more about how they find their flows, and why it\u2019s so important to their creative processes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"font-secondary text-sm font-bold text-theme-copy \">Anu Ambasna<\/h4>\n<div class=\"html\">\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1079421634?badge=0&amp;autopause=0&amp;player_id=0&amp;app_id=58479\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;\" title=\"Anu Ambasna on how she finds her flow\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"font-copy text-2xs md:text-xs leading-normal md:leading-normal text-theme-copy [&amp;_a:hover]:opacity-60 [&amp;_a]:transition-opacity [&amp;_a:hover]:duration-150 c_prose flex flex-col gap-5\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A stalwart of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/topic\/south-london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South London\u2019s<\/a> music scene, Anu Ambasna \u2013 or anu when she\u2019s on the tools \u2013 is an DJ and artist who has held down a residency on NTS Radio since its early days. Away from the ones-and-twos, she is also a painter and illustrator, and her comic book drawings touch on anything from the corporate world to DJ culture.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWhen I\u2019m deep in my flow state and I\u2019m drawing, it kind of feels like there\u2019s nothing around me,\u201d she says. \u201cThere\u2019s no sense of time, and I could have been drawing for 20 minutes, an hour, and I forget about everything and get locked in. It\u2019s very cathartic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When drawing and painting, Anu often looks to music to aid in finding her flow, and reaches for specific artists who tap into a corner of her brain where she feels the most creative. \u201cI\u2019m usually listening to Sonic Youth or anything with guitars or feels angsty,\u201d she continues. \u201cFor me, creating art is a way to tap into my inner child, especially my teen self, and I like to listen back to the music I was listening to as a teenager when I\u2019m in that [flow] state.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"font-secondary text-sm font-bold text-theme-copy \">Joel Mignott<\/h4>\n<div class=\"font-copy text-2xs md:text-xs leading-normal md:leading-normal text-theme-copy [&amp;_a:hover]:opacity-60 [&amp;_a]:transition-opacity [&amp;_a:hover]:duration-150 c_prose flex flex-col gap-5\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When he\u2019s not cooking intricate meals in the kitchen, chef and DJ Joel Mignott is usually serving up pumping heat to dancefloors. He\u2019s the co-founder of DJ Supper Club, which fuses music and boisterous entertainment to reimagine the usually quiet affair of fine dining.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For Joel, flow is the point when everything comes together. \u201cI think the moments where I\u2019m most in flow state are when I have curated an event, my supper club for example, where there is a convergence of music or food,\u201d he says. \u201cThere are so many minute details that go into this big event, and when you get down to the moment when everything\u2019s on and you have to serve for everybody, it\u2019s those moments when I fully phase out everything and get the job in hand done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While creative sparks can so often seem like a bolt from the blue, Joel stresses the importance of putting the work in beforehand. \u201cThe moments that feel most effortless come with a lot of preparation,\u201d he explains. \u201cWhen I\u2019ve prepared my DJ sets, I feel comfortable and safe enough to grab it by the horns and let it work for me. For her, producing and creating music is a different kind of flow to performing live, and she needs a specific set of circumstances to find it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI have to be comfortable, and I can\u2019t have anything ugly around me,\u201d she says. \u201cMy desk area is filled with trinkets that I collected and it\u2019s all my aesthetic decision \u2013 I chose the paint on the walls, I chose the desk, and they are all aesthetically pleasing. Only when things fall into place like that, I can get into the flow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Playing live is a very different situation for her.
