Chris Jansing<\/strong> was among the reporters on the ground, having covered the papacy for many years. Beginning May 5, she\u2019ll anchor a two-hour edition of MSNBC Reports at noon ET as part of MSNBC\u2019s revamped daytime lineup.<\/p>\nFollowing the funeral, Jansing spoke with TVNewser about recent Vatican City events and what\u2019s next for the papacy. <\/p>\n
You have covered the papacy for many years. What made Pope Francis different from his predecessors?<\/strong><\/p>\nIt\u2019s been 20 years\u2014and three popes\u2014since I began reporting on the major Vatican moments. Francis\u2019 papacy has seen tremendous external change; during his 12 years, technology transformed reporters\u2019 ability to cover him in real time in travels around the world\u201465 countries!\u00a0And I think people get it right when they say Francis has a cinematic quality, warm and approachable.\u00a0Those qualities, at a time when so many feel the world is in chaos, are probably why he had approval ratings any politician would envy.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s been nearly a week since you landed in the Vatican. Can you explain the atmosphere on the ground?<\/strong><\/p>\nThe first reaction after his death was shock. Francis had been in St. Peter\u2019s Square just the day before for Easter.\u00a0Now, at the end of the week, it feels more like a pilgrimage. People tell me they feel called to pay their respects, to thank him.\u00a0And for many, to witness history.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Why is the Pope still revered and important and why is papacy coverage warranted?<\/strong><\/p>\nIn sheer numbers, of course, Pope Francis led the world\u2019s nearly 1.4 billion Catholics and was the world\u2019s most recognizable religious leader. What you learn when you walk the line of mourners, though, is that it is filled with non-Catholics, too.\u00a0I\u2019ve spoken to Protestants, Buddhist, Jews, and agnostics who speak with great admiration for him, and who often told me he represented hope for things to be better.\u00a0I heard that word a lot this week\u2014hope.\u00a0I heard a lot of people say, We need that now.<\/p>\n
Is there something unique that caught your eye during Pope Francis\u2019 funeral?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\nFor me, it\u2019s two images. The lone nun, a decades-long friend of Pope Francis standing in an area around his coffin that was always reserved for men. Her raw emotion\u2014and the deference paid\u2014was deeply moving. And then there was a little girl whose mom asked her if she wanted to say goodbye to the Pope.\u00a0She did, and they waited in line for hours because that little girl said she wanted to ask Francis to say hi to her grandfather, who had died.\u00a0It\u2019s a great privilege to do this job, to witness history and tell these stories.\u00a0And no matter how big the story, it\u2019s usually individual people who stick with me.<\/p>\n

What happens next when it comes to naming the next pope?<\/strong><\/p>\nThe high drama that follows every papal funeral is so dramatic that movies have been made about it<\/a>.\u00a0 And even before the Cardinals go into the Sistine Chapel to vote, the conversations between them that are never revealed are nevertheless the subject of intense speculation.\u00a0How long will it take until there\u2019s white smoke signaling the new Pope?\u00a0How many votes?\u00a0The fascination is no surprise, especially since so many conclaves have produced unexpected outcomes.\u00a0What\u2019s the saying?\u00a0Anyone who goes into the conclave as a Pope comes out of it a Cardinal!\u00a0So buckle up.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"For the past week, the news industry\u2019s attention has been concentrated on Vatican City as the world mourned Pope Francis.
