Working people and their unions have fought to make that promise real, winning life-saving protections and forcing employers to take safety more seriously. Those victories have saved countless lives and prevented numerous injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But the fight isn\u2019t over. Every single day,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aflcio.org\/reports\/dotj-2025\"><span class=\"s3\">roughly 385 U.S. workers die<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from work-related injuries and illnesses. And these usually aren\u2019t freak accidents. They are often preventable tragedies caused by employers cutting corners, politicians refusing to act, or regulators not being staffed or empowered to do the work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As we commemorate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aflcio.org\/about-us\/conferences-and-events\/workers-memorial-day\"><span class=\"s3\">Workers Memorial Day on April 28<\/span><\/a>, we should honor the lives lost and remember the damage done. And we must recommit ourselves to the fight for safer jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Here in Alabama, workers face some of the most dangerous conditions, with some of the weakest protections, anywhere in the world\u2019s advanced economies. While other states have expanded safety standards, Alabama\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/stateplans\"><span class=\"s3\">still refuses to extend basic OSHA protections<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to more than 300,000 state and local government workers. That means folks who fix our roads, care for our children and keep our public services running can be sent into unsafe conditions without legal recourse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And it\u2019s not just public workers. The state\u2019s political leadership too often has prioritized corporate profits over human lives. Alabama\u2019s weak enforcement and lax regulations leave working people exposed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/news\/newsreleases\/region4\/01052022\"><span class=\"s3\">toxic chemicals<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucs.org\/about\/news\/extreme-heat-could-threaten-12-billion-annually-alabama-outdoor-worker-earnings\"><span class=\"s3\">extreme heat<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/news\/newsreleases\/region4\/08222023\"><span class=\"s3\">dangerous equipment<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/news\/newsreleases\/region4\/06202024-0\"><span class=\"s3\">fatal falls<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/newsroom\/releases\/osha\/osha20240205\"><span class=\"s3\">punishing hours<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In one horrific example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/news\/newsreleases\/national\/02222024\"><span class=\"s3\">an OSHA investigation<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of a 2023 fatal incident at a Phenix City sawmill \u201crevealed, for the second time in three years, that the employer could have prevented a tragedy by following required safety rules.\u201d The man, who gave 20 years to the company, suffered a gruesome death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Our state government has only one person tasked with enforcing child labor laws, despite the risks facing children in the workplace. That understaffing is even more shocking given that we know\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/newsroom\/releases\/whd\/whd20240530\"><span class=\"s3\">children have been found to be illegally working in dangerous conditions in Alabama<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How many more stories of workplace injury and illness will we never know?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Behind every statistic is a community forever changed. Children grow up without a parent. Spouses are burdened with grief and medical debt. Families are hollowed out by preventable loss. The human cost of unsafe work ripples far beyond the job site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But there is a proven solution: unions. Unionized workers are significantly more likely to have safer workplaces, the power to speak up with less fear of retaliation, and the strength to negotiate for better conditions. Workers in states with so-called \u201cright-to-work\u201d laws have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aflcio.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-04\/2411%20DOTJ%202024%20DIG%20NB%20REV.pdf\"><span class=\"s3\">a 56 percent greater risk<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of dying on the job than workers in states without these laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Through collective bargaining, shop-floor organizing and political advocacy, unions have led the way in winning standards like heat protections, hazard pay, rest breaks, fire exits, ongoing training and proper safety equipment. A strong labor movement means safer jobs for all workers \u2013 union and non-union alike \u2013 by raising standards across industries and communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If our elected officials care about working families, they need to act. That means\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prospect.org\/labor\/can-we-protect-americas-workers-osha\/\"><span class=\"s3\">passing laws<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that protect all workers, regardless of where they live or for whom they work. It means giving OSHA and other safety agencies the resources and authority to do their job. It means defending institutions like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uaw-newsroom.prgloo.com\/press-release\/uaw-statement-on-job-cuts-at-the-national-institute-for-occupational-safety-and-health\"><span class=\"s3\">the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/umwa.org\/news-media\/press\/is-there-now-a-war-on-coal-miners\"><span class=\"s3\">the Mine Safety and Health Administration<\/span><\/a>\u00a0against attempts to gut their budgets or erase their missions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The White House is aggressively slashing funding and enforcement, putting workers in greater danger of reckless employers. If companies and politicians want to show their commitment to our health and safety, they should stop contributing to the barriers to unionization that keep so many Southern workers from having a voice on the job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Workers shouldn\u2019t have to risk their lives just to put food on the table. We must reject the idea that dangerous jobs are just part of life in the South.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement.
