Turkey&#8217;s Lira Crisis May Provide Clues"},"content":{"rendered":" \r\n<br><div>\n\n                                        \n\n\n<p><strong><em>Turkey\u2019s President Erdogan\u2019s experience with central bank interference serves as a warning, as it led to a currency collapse and increased investment in bitcoin and stablecoins.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-to-know\">What to know:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>President Donald Trump\u2019s reported plans to fire Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell could accelerate the ongoing sell-off in USD and BTC adoption.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turkey\u2019s President Recep Erdogan\u2019s experience with central bank interference serves as a warning, as it led to a currency collapse and increased investment in bitcoin and stablecoins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The week has begun on an interesting note, with the U.S. dollar crashing to three-year lows alongside losses on Wall Street, yet bitcoin (BTC), which usually follows the sentiment on Wall Street, stands resilient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of press time, bitcoin changed hands near $87,000, representing a 2% gain in the day.<\/p><div class=\"g g-1\"><div class=\"g-single a-6\"><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"NiwxLDEsNjA=\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dontgetpushedaround.com\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"850\" height=\"500\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.activistpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/AP-AffiliateAd-850x500-LegalShield-1.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This could just be the beginning of bitcoin\u2019s evolution as a haven asset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shift away from the USD and toward seizure and censorship-resistant assets like BTC and stablecoins could accelerate if President Donald Trump follows through with his reported plans to fire Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, which have pushed the DXY and U.S. stock markets lower today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the lesson from Turkey, which has seen its currency, the lira (TRY), collapse over the years mainly due to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan\u2019s repeated interference in the central bank\u2019s operations. The sliding lira has triggered a capital\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2021\/12\/10\/tether-shib-compete-with-bitcoin-in-inflation-ridden-turkey-as-lira-tumbles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flight into BTC and stablecoins since at least 2020-21<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trump\u2019s issues with the Fed<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump has feuded publicly with the Federal Reserve and its chairman, Jerome Powell, for years, criticizing Powell for being too late on rate cuts even during his first term when interest rates were way lower than today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Trump\u2019s criticism has recently reached a fever pitch with reports suggesting he is looking for ways to get rid of Powell, who recently warned of stagflation even as the President reiterated calls for lower borrowing costs while suggesting there is no inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Powell\u2019s patient approach follows a trade war-led spike in survey-based measures of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7637cdf1-8ad5-4f07-a562-51df8c2226e0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inflation expectations<\/a>, which could always become self-fulfilling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, on Monday, Trump went further,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/21\/trump-powell-attacks-interest-rates-fed.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">calling Powell a \u201cmajor loser\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and warning that the economy could slow down unless interest rates are immediately lowered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lesson From Turkey<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Erdogan began interfering in the central bank\u2019s operations in 2019, and since then, the lira has collapsed sevenfold from 5.3 per dollar to 38 per dollar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It all started with Turkey\u2019s inflation rate reaching double digits in 2017. It remained elevated in the subsequent year, which prompted the country\u2019s central bank\u00a0to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/09\/13\/lira-jumps-as-turkish-central-bank-hikes-rates-to-24-percent.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increase the one-week repo rate<\/a>\u00a0from 17.5% to 24% in September 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move likely didn\u2019t go well with Erodgan, who issued the first decree dismissing Central Bank of Turkey (CBT) governor Murat Cetinkaya in July 2019. From then on until the end of 2021, Erdogan issued multiple decrees dismissing and hiring several CBT officials. Amid all this, inflation remained elevated, and the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fxstreet.com\/amp\/news\/usd-try-turkish-lira-hits-record-low-as-countrys-fx-reserves-slide-202005070112\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lira continued to depreciate<\/a>\u00a0at an alarming rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe certainly don\u2019t believe in high interest rates. We will pull down inflation and exchange rates with low-rate policy \u2026 High rates make the rich richer, the poor poorer. We won\u2019t let that happen,\u201d\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.duvarenglish.com\/erdogan-says-inflation-forex-rates-to-come-down-with-low-interest-rates-news-59789\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erdogan said in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of 2025, Turkey faces an inflation rate of nearly 40%, according to data source TradingEconomics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cautionary tale<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This episode serves as a cautionary tale for Trump, highlighting that tampering with central bank independence \u2014 especially in the face of looming inflation \u2014 can erode investor confidence and send the domestic currency into a tailspin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This does not necessarily mean that the USD is headed for a lira-like crash but the greenback may see significant devaluation. The dollar index has already dropped over 10% to 98 in three months, according to data source TradingView.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps, the impact of Trump fiddling with the Fed independence could be more destabilising for global markets, considering the dollar is a global reserve currency, and the U.S. Treasury market is the bedrock for international finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global impact<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Most current account surplus countries with excess of domestic savings over investments export capital to the U.S. in the form of Treasury market holdings. That\u2019s never been the case with Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if the Fed\u2019s independence is threatened, surplus nations may reconsider their investments in the U.S. assets. Such a shift alone could lead to significant volatility in financial markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If better sense fails to prevail, U.S. investors may feel incentivized to move away from U.S. assets and into BTC and other alternative investments, just as Turks did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>April 22, 03:00 UTC:\u00a0<\/strong>Explains the global impact of Trump\u2019s potential action against Powell.
